Abstract

  • 1.

    1. The energetic cost of running on a motor driven treadmill was evaluated in kangaroo rats, Dipodomys merriami.

  • 2.

    2. Energy expenditure increases rectilinearly with increasing speed.

  • 3.

    3. The cost of running at 6°C is 17 per cent higher than its cost at 25 and 34°C.

  • 4.

    4. Under our conditions heat produced by exercise does not substitute for shivering at cold temperature.

  • 5.

    5. The greater portion of after-work extra oxygen consumption is recovered within 30 to 40 min.

  • 6.

    6. A description of a treadmill-metabolism apparatus for small animals is presented.
