2009, Cell Biology InternationalCitation Excerpt :In addition, in vivo and in vitro studies showed that reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen (Ghetti et al., 1992) and hydroxyl radicals (Kato et al., 1996), were direct agents for the photodynamic killing, whereas superoxide anion, another well-known ROS, was not produced (Kato et al., 1996). In fact, several ROS scavengers protected B. japonicum from the photodynamic killing (Checcucci et al., 1991; Yamamoto et al., 2007). Furthermore, our previous report first showed the visualized ROS generation with fluorescent ROS indicator, 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescin (Yamamoto et al., 2007).
