Abstract

The IR and Raman spectra of 1,2,2,3-tetrachloropropane and 1,3-dichloro-2,2-dimethylpropane are recorded as liquids and as solids both at low temperature and at high pressure. Both compounds exist as a mixture of at least 2 conformers in the liquid phase and crystallize in the GG conformation at low temperature. Under high pressure the first compound also crystallizes in the GG conformation, but the second crystallizes in the AG conformation. The second compound is shown to have a plastic crystalline phase, but no such phase is evident for the first. Vibrational assignments for the various conformers are made, supported by normal coordinate calculations.
