Differential Mutagenic Activity of l(+) and d(−) Diepoxybutane

Abstract

THE mutagenic activity of diepoxybutane (1 : 2,3 : 4-butadiene dioxide) has been investigated in several biological systems1–3. In Neurospora, its ability to induce back mutations at the adenineless locus was found to be about twenty times higher than with X-rays1. On the other hand, its chromosome-breaking activity is high for both higher plants and animals3–5. In this respect, this difunctional compound is about 150 times more efficient than the monofunctional corresponding ethylene oxide. Two isomers of this compound were synthesized by Feit6. The experiments recorded here were designed to test if the two compounds have similar activity in both producing mutations and chromosome aberrations.
