Influence of Temperature and Medium on the X-ray Sensitivities of Leukæmia Cells in vitro

Abstract

Hollaender and Stapleton1 demonstrated with various strains of E. coli that the fraction of cells which survived (that is, retained ability to form colonies) from a given dose of X-rays could be significantly increased if the cells were maintained for some hours before being plated out at either a sub-optimal temperature or in medium enriched with yeast extract (see also Alper and Gillies2, for restorative action of different media). We have now observed what would appear to be comparable phenomena with murine leukæmia cells in vitro. An effect of serum on the radio-sensitivity of mammalian cells has also been found by de Oca et al.3.
