Effects of 2,2-Dichloropropionic, Trichloroacetic, and 2,3-Dichloroisobutyric Acids on Synthesis of Anthocyanin in Flowers of Salvia splendens cultivar America

Abstract

GOWING and Lange1 recently reported that a number of herbicides (chloroalkycarboxylic acids) caused changes in colour in a wide variety of flowers. The changes reported were the disappearance of purple and red and the appearance of orange and yellow. These observations suggest that the synthesis of the carotenoid pigments may not have been affected whereas the synthesis of the anthocyanin pigments could have been inhibited. Described herein are the effects of 2,2-dichloropropionic acid (‘Dalapon’), trichloroacetic acid (TCA), and 2,3-dichloroisobutyric acid (DCIB) on the synthesis of the anthocyanins in the flowers of Salvia splendens cultivar America.
