Gas-Flow Patterns in Fluidized Beds

Abstract

A FLUIDIZED bed is sometimes used as a means of carrying out a chemical reaction between a gas and solid particles. In gas-fluidized beds, ‘bubbles’ form and there is considerable interest in the part played by these in gas/solids in contact. It has been suggested, for example, that some of the gas rises through the bed in the form of bubbles and effectively bypasses the solid particles2. Several investigators1–7 have made various indirect measurements and have concluded that back-mixing of the gas occurs. These processes are important in estimating reaction-rates. So far as we are aware, no one has hitherto observed directly gas-flow patterns within the bed.
