A New Synthesis of Cinnoline Derivatives

Abstract

IN connexion with an investigation on the elaboration of the Coffey1 synthesis of 1-ketotetra-hydrocarbazoles, a study of the action of acidic reagents on a number of 1 : 2-cyclohexadionemonophenylhydrazones of the type (I) has recently been undertaken. Although it has not so far proved possible to obtain 1-ketotetrahydrocarbazolenines (II) by this means, an interesting synthesis of cinnoline derivatives has come to light.
