Abstract
THE substance called epidermal chalone contained in normal mammalian epidermis is known to inhibit mitosis in a tissue specific manner1–3. The chalone is heat labile and nondialysable; it is precipitated by ethanol and can be preserved in a lyophilized form4. It appears5 to be a glycoprotein of molecular weight between 25,000 and 30,000. Aqueous extracts and a partially purified ethanol fraction of the skin of man, mouse, cod and pig inhibit mitosis in vitro and in vivo4,6,7. Similar extracts from other tissues do not affect mitosis in the epidermis8–12.
