Antagonistic and Synergistic Actions of Thyrocalcitonin and Parathyroid Hormone on the Levels of Calcium and Phosphate in the Rat

Abstract

THE discovery of the existence of a hypocalcaemic hormone in the thyroid gland1 raises the question of the respective roles of thyrocalcitonin and parathyroid hormone on plasma calcium and phosphate homeostasis. As the kidney is a target organ for parathyroid hormone and is involved in plasma phosphate homeostasis, it was thought important to investigate the effects of thyrocalcitonin on calcium and phosphate levels in plasma, and on their excretion in the urine, both in the presence and absence of parathyroid hormone.
