Notes: Abstract: The constitutive equations for the orientational dynamics of a liquid formed of linear molecules are derived microscopically. The resulting generalised Langevin equations coincide with the phenomenological approach of Dreyfus et al. [1]. Formally exact expressions are given for the phenomenological coefficients and various constraints are shown to be consequences of this microscopic approach.

Notes: Abstract: We derive expressions for the intensity of the Brillouin polarized spectrum of a molecular liquid formed of axially symmetric molecules. These expressions take into account both the molecular dielectric anisotropy and the modulation of the local polarisability by density fluctuations. They also incorporate all the retardation effects which occur in such liquids. We show that the spectrum splits into a q-independent rotational contribution and q-dependent term, which reflects the propagation of longitudinal acoustic modes. In the latter, the two light scattering mechanisms enter on an equal footing and generate three scattering channels. We study the influence of the two new channels and show that they may substantially modify the Brillouin line-shape when the relaxation time of the supercooled liquid and the period of the acoustic excitation are of the same order of magnitude.

Notes: Abstract The cavitated bifurcation problem in a solid sphere composed of two compressible hyper-elastic materials under a uniform boundary radial stretch was examined. The solutions, including the trivial solution and the cavitated solutions, were obtained. The bifurcation curves and the stress contributions subsequent to cavitation were discussed. The phenomena of the right and the left bifurcations as well as the catastrophe and concentration of stresses are observed. The stability of solutions is discussed through the energy comparison.

Notes: Abstract: Natural radiative lifetimes of eight levels in Tm I ( 4f 135d6p and 4f 125d6s 2 configurations), two levels in Tm II ( 4f 125d6s configuration) and three levels in Tm III (4f 125d configuration) have been measured by using time-resolved laser spectroscopy. Free thulium atoms, as well as singly and doubly ionized ions, were obtained in a laser-induced thulium plasma and the investigated states were selectively populated by a single-step excitation process with a tunable narrow-band laser pulse.

Notes: Abstract: New radiative lifetime measurements based on time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence techniques are reported for 18 even-parity levels belonging to the 4f5d26p and 4f 25d 2 configurations of Ce I and 6 even-parity levels belonging to the 5d26s, 4f5d6p, and 4f6s6p configurations of Ce II. Free neutral and singly ionized cerium atoms were produced by laser ablation. The Ce I and Ce II levels range in energy from 26 545 to 29 102 cm-1, and 42 573 to 48 152 cm-1, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Elastic layers with varying dilative eigenstrains through the thickness were concerned. A general procedure was proposed for the analysis of such layers under arbitrary loads. The study is based on the state-space method and an asymptotic expansion technique. When the external loads are uniform, the expansion terminates after some leading terms, and an explicit representation for the mechanical field in a layer is obtained. This representation relies only on the displacement components of the mid-plane, which are governed by a set of two-dimensional differential equations similar to those in the classical plate theory. Consequently, obtaining the solution to the two-dimensional equations immediately gives the three-dimensional responses of the layer. As an illustrative example, a clamped elliptical layer under a uniformly distributed transverse load is analyzed in detail.
