Notes: A simple masking noise generator which can be constructed for about thirty five dollars is described. The output is sufficient to drive several pairs of headphones or a loudspeaker in a Skinner box. Duplication of the unit for another twenty five dollars allows “stereo” masking noise to be used on the headphones, a feature which most subjects find more pleasant than monaural masking noise.

Notes: A comparison was made between classical conditioning and pseudoconditioning of heart rate (HR) and galvanic skin response (GSR) using low or high intensity shock as unconditioned stimuli (UCS). Conditioning treatment involved 5-sec delayed conditioning, 32 trials/session for 5 sessions with shock administered randomly on half the trials. Pseudoconditioning was exactly the same except for pairing of CS and UCS.In contrast to pseudoconditioning, which produced mild acceleration of HR, minimal GSR, and frequent somatic response to the CS (as defined electromyographically), conditioning treatment produced consistent deceleration of HR, larger magnitude and frequency of GSR, and minimal overt somatic response to CS. The conditioned decelerative HR response developed rapidly and persisted throughout the experiment. Such apparent conditioning phenomena may still involve sensitization-type effects and somatic interactions.

Notes: Transducers using strain gauges as sensing elements were successfully employed to record respiration from rats. The transducers were shaped to fit over the animals’ backs, and were used in both restrained and free-roving situations. A direct current (DC) bridge in conjunction with an alternating current (AC) amplifier eliminated base-line adjustments.

Notes: The relation between cardiac activity and motor activity wan investigated in a monkey with normal blood pressure working on a 10-sec Sidman avoidance schedule. The monkey's lever-pressing; activity and his blood pressure, measured from an arterial catheter, were simultaneously recorded on a dynograph. A total of 2536 lever presses were recorded in there test periods. and each response was related to the phase of the blood pressure wave m which it occurred. A Spearman rank correlation coefficient of 0.63 was found between the time of onset of the response and the height of the pressure wave when the data were grouped into 10, periods and adjusted for a 110-meser delay. These results were interpreted as additional support for the idea that the autonomic afferent fibers maintaining homeostatic circulatory adjustment can also modulate midbrain reticular activity and thus influence the expression of voluntary behavior.

Notes: An electrode for in-flight recording of EEG is described. This electrode provides significant improvement over previously available types. When properly applied, it produces little noise, even when tapped. It is difficult to accidentally dislodge and is comfortable under close-fitting head gear. The leads, a major problem source, may be replaced easily. The impedance between two electrodes is 5000 ohms or less, permitting use with miniature transistorized amplifiers.

Notes: Ss were given one of three different response tasks to perform in a detection of deception experiment using the galvanic skin response (GSR). The first group was told to say nothing as they heard each question, the second group to say “no” to each question, and the third group to make a word association to each question. Questions were presented in both a random order and a known sequential order. There were over-all differences among the three groups for both conditions of question presentation. The second group was most frequently detected, the first group next, and the third group was detected least frequently. Differences between experimental procedures used in this study and other studies using word association do not permit comparison of the results of this study with other studies.

Notes: With heart rate as a criterion measure of arousal, amplitude of alpha rhythm of the electroencephalogram (EEG) was studied in 99 subjects aged 28 to 99 years. The physiological recordings were made while the subjects were performing a simple reaction task. Conditions of the experiment provided a range of arousal states from drowsiness to alertness.Careful examination of data from each of the 99 cases failed to reveal any evidence of an inverted-U relationship between alpha amplitude and heart rate scores. It was shown that the method of analysis, which combines observations from different subjects and which was used in a previously reported investigation (Stennett, 1957), is Invalid.

Notes: Active eccrine sweat gland activity was measured in 30 Negro and 29 Caucasian male subjects to determine whether sweat gland activity was a possible factor in racial differences in skin conductance. Basal skin conductance, heart rate, respiratory rate, finger skin temperature and blood pressure were also obtained. Negro Ss had significantly lower skin conductance but no other significant physiological differences were found. While there was no significant difference in number of active sweat glands between the races, the intragroup relationship between sweat gland count and skin conductance was significantly higher for the Negro Ss. The two groups did not differ in number of nonspecific galvanic skin responses (GSRs) but the Caucasian Ss showed greater change in skin conductance to an initial tone stimulus. When differences in prestimulus levels were taken into account, the group differences in response to stimuli were no longer significant.

Notes: The primary purpose of the experiments was to determine whether stress is a necessary precondition for ionized air to affect behavior. A secondary objective was to investigate the relationship between ion polarity and subject age. Thirty-six male albino rats of the Wistar strain were used as subjects, divided into 2 groups according to age; one group was 3 months, and the other 14 months, old. Animals were exposed in environmental chambers in which the ion concentrations were 2.9 × 105 positive ions/cc, 1.4 × 105 negative ions/cc, or 600 positive and negative ions cc (control). Criteria for evaluating behavioral effects were rate of learning of a water maze and performance in the maze after learning was complete. Half of the subjects were subjected to a 60-v, 0.7–sec electrical shock prior to maze trials. Results indicate that stress is not a necessary precondition for air ions to affect behavior. Learning of the maze was enhanced by both ion polarities, particularly by negatively ionized air. Performance of the older animals living in a negatively ionized atmosphere was significantly improved.

Notes: Electrodermal responsiveness as measured by orienting responses to tone stimulation and to a word-association task was evaluated in a group of schizophrenic patients upon admission to the hospital and after 5 weeks of hospitalization. Two evaluations were conducted, the first based on clinical recovery, the second based on electrodermal responsiveness at time of first testing. Results indicate that patients who demonstrate more rapid habituation at second time of testing have a better hospital discharge record than those who show no change in rate of habituation. Electrodermal responsiveness to the word-association task at first time of testing was related to such factors as clinical diagnosis, severity of illness, and adequacy of word associations. In general, patients who were most responsive demonstrated less pathology than those who were less responsive at first time of testing.

Notes: A transistorized amplifier has been designed with the aim of providing a reliable triggering signal for a cardiotachograph when it is recording from small animals. The frequent base-line instabilities of the cardio signal caused by the animal's movements are eliminated by the use of a transformer at the input. Direct coupling between the stages assures fast recovery of the amplifier from overloads produced by large transient signals. Correct placement of the electrodes is important for obtaining a large electrocardiogram (EKG) signal and for the reduction of artifacts. (W. J. Mundl)

Notes: Changes in skin conductance (GSR), skin potential (SP), heart rate (HR), finger blood volume (BV), and pulse volume (PV) were recorded in response to 2-sec bursts of white noise. Five intensity levels of sound (60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 db) were presented over 5 repetitions. Results showed that: (1) response magnitudes and latencies were directly related to stimulus intensity and inversely related to number of repetitions; (2) for BV, SP, and GSR the effect of repetition varied with stimulus intensity; (3) HR changes were primarily monophasic; and (4) BV and PV were more sensitive to stimulus intensity differences than were the electrodermal responses.

Notes: The differential effect of incentive on finger sweating compared with the effects on various other physiological measures was investigated in a group of 59 Ss. Finger sweating (FS) appeared slightly superior to palmar conductance (PC) in discriminating between low and high incentive conditions, but heart rate (HR) and muscle potentials appeared to be the best of those discriminators used.Correlations between PC and visual ratings for FS were 0.65 and 0.09 for high and low incentive conditions, respectively. There were numerous significant correlations between physiological measures (at relatively low levels) but the two FS measures correlated only with PC and with each other. Correlations between physiological and performance measures were also obtained. On the one hand HR and electromyograms (EMGs), and on the other PC and FS ratings, differed with respect to the incentive conditions under which significant correlations with performance were obtained. In the main, HR and EMGs showed significant correlations with performance under low, and PC and FS ratings under high incentive.Further evidence for less sweating by dark-skinned Ss compared with light-skinned Ss was reported.

Notes: Lockhart and Grings (1963) have suggested that a previous analysis of galvanic skin response (GSR) conditioning by Stewart, Stern, Winokur, and Fredman (1961) failed to establish its major point since it neglected to include a pseudoconditioning control for sensitization effects. In the present paper an experiment is reported in which this control was included, and it was found that the initial report of Stewart et al. was supported. That is, there was significant evidence of a conditional anticipatory GSR which was not due to sensitization effects.

Notes: Thirty-two male college students who scored above 50 (standard score) on the Closure Flexibility (CF) test were designated field independent (FI), and eight who scored below 50 were designated field dependent (FD). It was found that FI subjects were able to discriminate between the conditioned tone (CS) and the un-reinforced generalization tones by the amplitude of their GSR significantly better (p 〈 0.01) than were FD persons. Although it cannot be asserted with certainty that this relationship is dependent on the autonomic response system, there is tentative support for this position. It seems probable that even the FD subjects could distinguish between the two most different pitched tones; yet they failed to make this distinction by their GSR responses. This lack of differentiation by the FD subject appears to be a function of a less well-differentiated autonomic nervous system. This study demonstrates that the stimulus generalization gradient involves an interaction between the cognitive style of the organism and the impinging stimuli, not merely the quantitative physical characteristics of the stimuli.

Notes: A high resolution, liquid-displacement apparatus for monitoring salivary flow is described, and details of its construction from standard laboratory items are provided. The results of a quantitative evaluation indicate: (1) sensitivity to variations in intraglandular pressure of less than 1 mm Hg; (2) instrument time lag of less than 500 msec; and (3) resolution of 0.003 ml. A comparison with previously described liquid-displacement sialometers indicates an increase in resolution by a factor of 3.

Notes: A method is presented for recording breathing rate in the unrestrained rat. A thermocouple is implanted in the nose and the leads are externalized through a terminal implanted on the skull. The difference in temperature between inspired and expired air is taken as the measure of breathing. Techniques for construction and implantation of the thermocouple unit are presented.

Notes: The history of GSR Classical conditioning studies on the optimal CS-UCS interval has been evaluated in the context of the phenomena of internal inhibition of delay HD, an effect of delayed reinforcement. It was concluded from this review that nearly all GSR studies concerned with this theoretical issue lack validity since responses to stimulus onset orienting and unconditioned responses and not delayed conditioned responses have been the subject of measurement. The existence of an “optimal” CS-UCS interval is questionable, however, and appropriate experimental methodology is suggested for the solution of this problem. The role of temporal processes in classical conditioning has been emphasized and the concept of “precision” in neural timing mechanisms mediating delayed CRs has been advanced. It is suggested that the neural temporal properties of the conditioning process have greater heuristic value than the intensity properties of the conditioned response.

Notes: A base skin resistance galvanic skin reflex (B/GSR) module combined BSR and GSR activity into a 1-channel recording. Three identical modules were used to record 3 sites simultaneously on a series of normal subjects. Electrode sites included bilateral palmar locations and a location just beneath the medial malleolus. The GSR amplification factor was a fixed value of 3.0. The units provided a generally satisfactory combined record of BSR and reflex activity. The BSR and GSR patterns observed simultaneously from 3 sites consistently showed very similar changes. Four distinct B/GSR activity patterns were identified.

Notes: The view that the EEG shows a continuum correlated with behavioral arousal was subjected to experimental test. A simple model of the expected results from five experimental states of arousal was used as a criterion against which to evaluate various parameters of EEG data after they had been processed by electronic analysis systems.Eighteen normal young adults were the Ss. Occipital and parietal recordings were taken during relaxation, attention, arousal, recovery, and relief states. Sample epochs of the records were analyzed by amplitude distribution, frequency spectrum, power spectrum, wavelength distribution, autocorrelation, and cross correlation. No single parameter matched the predicted model in a convincing manner. However, correlograms of occipital recordings after interpretation by relative power ratios did support the hypothesis with statistically significant differences. It was concluded that behavioral arousal is inversely related to the scaled continua of (1) the proportion of total power to be found at the dominant frequency, and (2) rhythmicity of the dominant wave.

Notes: A study was made of the skin potential (SP), skin resistance (SR), and sweating of the cat's foot pad. Since many of the variables studied had previously been investigated in humans, comparable data were obtained. The characteristics of SP and SR of the cat are similar to those of humans, except that in cats, SP responses have a shorter latency than SR responses, and variation of the SP basal potential resulting from induction of a voltage between the SP electrodes has no effect on the amplitude or wave form of SP responses. Dissociation produced by arterial occlusion and procaine injection around the nerve suggest that SP responses of the cat are innervated by different nerve fibers than those which lead to the sweat glands.

Notes: Eight hypotheses derived from Sokolov's theory of habituation of the orienting response were tested. Subjects were given a series of 36 standard stimuli (SSs). each 500 cps. Four interpolations of a 1000-cps test stimulus (TS) for one group (N = 10) and of a 4000-cps TS for another group (N = 10) were made. Results for amplitude of galvanic skin response (GSR) for combined groups showed that habituation occurred over the first eight SSs and over the four TSs, that a TS produced return of GSR and disrupted habituation to the SS, and that response was greater to the TS than to the following SS. The 4000 TS disrupted habituation to the SS more than the 1000 TS and produced less drop from the TS to the next SS. Seven hypotheses were confirmed. Habituation of resistance level was found but spontaneous fluctuations were not. Sokolov's theory and the results obtained were related to the classical conditioning of autonomic processes.

Notes: Dural, orbital, and depth electrodes were chronically implanted in five monkeys, and 473 brain stem stimulations were given during 80 hr of EEG recording on 14 nights of sleep.Although occasional rapid eye movement sleep periods occurred soon after stimulations, no parameters or loci of stimulation consistently provoked REMPs, occurred.Statistical analyses did not demonstrate any precipitation of REMPs, and it is probable that only spontaneous REMPs occurred. When compared with previous reports, these findings emphasize the importance of statistical controls in neurophysiological studies of REMP origin.

Notes: Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), blood pressure (BP). and motor components of responses to non-reinforced and reinforced auditory stimuli were studied in six dogs over a period of 20 months. The experiment consisted of several phases: habituation, orienting training, conditioning, extinction, and reconditioning. Differentiated non-specific motor reactions in four of six dogs developed quickly and before the differentiated specific motor conditioned response (CR) and consistent HR or RR conditioned responses. The form of the gross organismic CR pattern differed in each dog. Yet the animals reliably maintained, in each separate system, their rank-order positions across experimental phases, suggesting that the CR is determined in part by innate or earlier acquired differences in functioning.

Notes: Moment-by-moment changes in the phase or relative timing of electroencephalographic (EEG) patterns in different brain areas show great lability and psychological responsiveness, and are studied as possible correlates of peripheral psychophysiological reaction. Relative leading, lagging, and in-phase relationships between EEGs of different brain areas are automatically recorded, and stimuli classed as simple sensory, indifferent-ideational, disturbing-ideational, and adaption routines are employed. EEG leading in anterior and central brain areas is found to characterize conditions of arousal. Rapid diphasic reversals of interarea EEG phase relationship during mental activity is possibly symptomatic of interaction between brain areas. Effects of familiarity and adaptation are evaluated.
