Description / Table of Contents: Investigation of the Comparative Inhibiting Effect of Organic Compounds in Aqueous SolutionsTests were made to determine the protective effect of a number of organic compounds, of different types on the corrosion of steel sheet in aqueous solution. The rate of corrosion was estimated by weight loss. The effect of the concentrations and pH values of the solutions on the initiation of corrosion was also determined. It was found that the protective effect of alkaline compounds was determined by the minimum basicity of the solution. Acid compounds, tested in the form of their sodium salts, were protective if their dissociation constants lay within a certain range.

Description / Table of Contents: Designing of Constructions to Make Painting and Protection against Rust Easy (Protection against Rust Begins at the Drawing Board)Construction elements like inaccessible corners and narrow slits should be prevented. To avoid waterbags, channal and angle irons shall be arranged with their openings showing down. Acute angles and connections of lattice masts, tube bridges, and supports which cannot be cleaned easily are unsatisfactory for painting. You should prefer welded constructions to riveted ones, and tube constructions to those made of sectional iron. Horizontal surfaces are endangered by staying water, depositions of dust and soot, and mossy growth. Smoke gases should be kept off railway bridges by wooden shields. Riveted joints and slits must be sealed; bases of girders may not be set in concrete. Suspensors for scaffolds will help to reduce the costs of renovation. Stationnary cars on the underframe of bridges are very useful. Covered girders as well as overlapping joints, and nodal sheets must be painted before they are installed.Welded constructions have advantageously less starting points for rusting than riveted ones because rivet heads are very often the points of precocius rusting.

Description / Table of Contents: Vibration Method to Detect Modifications in WoodThe authors investigated the influence of an impregnation by a synthetic resin or boric acid, a watering and the effects of alkali and mineral acids upon the torsional fatigue strength (modulus of elasticity in shear and logarithmic decrement) of numerous exotic hard and soft wood. While an impregnation makes the modulus of elasticity in shear raise watering and boric acid treatments diminish the logarithmic decrement but cause high torsional fatigue strength. The alkali resistance of numerous wood is generally much lower than their resistance to acids.

Description / Table of Contents: A Survey of Polish Publications on Accelerated Corrosion Tests of Electro-Plated Coatings to Determine Their Resistance to CorrosionThere is a discussion of several investigations on accelerated testing methods for the determination of the corrosion resistance of electro-plated coatings. The investigations have been started in 1953. Hitherto, electro-plated coatings of zinc, cadmium and tin have been tested. The thicknesses of the layers were generally 1, 2, 4, 7, 15 and 30 μ. Accelerated corrosion tests of electro-plated zinc coatings being passivated by 15 different chemical methods were subject of another publication. The corrosion experiments were carried out by means of different methods as there were the salt spray tests, the immersion tests in distilled water and in ammonium chloride solutions and the artificial industrial atmosphere tests.Special research work dealt with accelerated tests of phosphate coatings on steel. The results and consequences of the investigations are discussed briefly. Necessary literature data of papers are given. The investigations on accelerated corrosion tests of further electro-plated coatings are still going on.

Description / Table of Contents: New Paints Based on PlasticsThe article  -  addressed to workers in the paint industry  -  is intended to show the increasing influence of chemistry upon the technological development of the industry. It shows that there is no longer a frontier between plastics and paints. The isocyanate reaction is mentioned as a classic example of “custom made” raw materials for lacquers.Epoxy resins also show possibilities for the development of particular desired properties owing to the variety of substances with which they interact. The unsaturatid poly ester resins show new possibilities for paints and varnishes. The plastosoles and organosoles  -  suspensions of poly vinyl chloride (pvc) in plasticizers  -  are used as a means wherebyly pvc-powder for plastics materials can be applied in paint technology.Epoxy resins, unsaturated poly esters and organosoles are discussed in detail to show the way in which the frontier between plastics and paints has been narrowed by the results of chemical research.

Description / Table of Contents: The Corrosion of Distillery EquipmentThe formation of hydrogen sulfide in alcoholic fermentation cannot be avoided. Part of the gas, set free during the distillation of the fermented mash, causes corrosion of the distillation apparatus. Copper is especially sensitive to hydrogen sulfide and in the course of time a considerable quantity of grayish black copper sulfide accumulates in the receiver of a copper still. Distillation apparatus is therefore now made of special corrosion resisting steels alloyed with chromium, nickel and molybdenum. Instead of copper sulfide, free hydrogen sulfide is now encountered and this must be led out by a pipe between the cooler and the receiver. The hydrogen sulfide left in the raw alcohol may attack the sensitive tinned spirit gauge. It is suggested that spirit gauges should also be made of corrosion resisting materials. The fermented mash (containing about 8 vol. pct. of alcohol) contains a maximum of 150 mg hydrogen sulfide per hectolitre. Two thirds are set free in the distillation of the mash. Refined spirit contains no hydrogen sulfide because the latter is totally volatilitised during the rectification of the raw alcohol. For removal of hydrogen sulfide use should be made of a patent of the Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Spiritusfabrikation in Berlin. The alcohol, in steam- or in liquid-steam-phase, is passed through absorption chambers which contain active carbon, hydrated iron oxide and cement stones and in which the hydrogen sulfide is retained. There are thus methods of making the hydrogen sulfide harmless so that the corrosion of distillation and other equipment can be prevented.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Influence of Anaerobic Bacteria on the Current Density of Cathodically Protected Equipment in SoilsThe usually applicable specifications for the cathodic protection of buried steel pipes must be modified if anaerobic soil bacteria are present in large quantities. The tests in soils containing high concentrations of sulfate reducing bacteria have shown that the current density, deduced from an initial polarization curve, does not garrantee sufficient protection. An increased protective effect was achieved in an inocculated culture medium when a more negative voltage was applied and maintained during the five months duration of the experiment. Some theoretical consequences are drawn from the experimental results obtained.

Description / Table of Contents: High Temperature Corrosion by Hydrogen Sulfide from Experiences in Petroleum RefiningBeing introduced 5-7 years ago the catalytic transforming and desulfuration methods of the oil industry produce new corrosion problems by the attack of hydrogen sulfide at high temperatures. The attack causes losses of metal and formation of voluminious crusts which block the passages and disturbe the transfer of heat. The type of crusts depends on the sort of steel used. The temperature and the concentration of the hydrogen sulfide (partial pressure) condition the degree of the sulfide corrosion for most part. Because the hydrogen phase, which contains much hydrogen sulfide, is circulating the concentration of the hydrogen sulfide in the reactor and the additional equipment is much higher than that of the hydrocarbon input. The limiting value of the hydrogen sulfide concentration below which the degree of corrosion is zero was found to be in the range of 0,006-0,008 mol pct. Increase of temperature causes rising corrosion. The concentration of hydrogen is of little influenze.  -  To avoid this corrosion you will have to desulfurize the input material (which is very expensive) or the circulating gas phase or to use hydrogen sulfide resisting metals. Highpercent chrome nickel alloys proved to be good except at high temperatures. For practical use 18/8 chrome nickel steel guarantees suficient resistance. Aluminum showing exceptionally good properties may not be used in pressure vessels. But it may be applied for coatings on low alloyed chrome steels by hot galvanization or calorization or by spraying which is but an insufficient method. Because low alloyed chrome and carbon steels are applied at critical spots for economical reasons the formation of crusts is unavoidable. They will be removed by chemical agents e. g. hydrogen chloride. Because of poisonous gases  -  hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide  -  special precautions have to be taken.

Description / Table of Contents: On the protection at a distance given by Flame Sprayed Metallic Coatings on SteelExperiments are described to determine the degree of protection at a distance given by flame sprayed metallic coatings of zinc, aluminum and MG 5 on steel Flame sprayed metallic coatings were applied leaving gaps of various widths. Some of the coatings were covered almost completely with paraffin. Two corrosion tests were used, one by total immersion in natural seawater from the Baltice sea, the other by intermittent immersion in synthetic seawater according to German Specification DIN 50900. The degree of protection at a distance was judged from the results of tensile tests and by visual observation. No essential differences in the distance effects of the various coatings were observed. Protection at a distance also occured when most of the flame spryaed coating was covered with paraffin. The ratio of the areas of protected and protective metals is the essential factor determining the distance effect. Protection at a distance by flame spayed metallic rings was also observed in corrsion fatigue tests.

Description / Table of Contents: The Corrosion Behavior of Magnesium during Inhibition and Activation of its Dissolution represented in a io-pH-DiagrammThe velocity of dissolution of magnesium in acids and alkalis is represented in a corrosion current  -  pH-value diagramm. The conversion of the corrosion current io into the conventional unit g/m2/d was carried out for a magnesium electrode of 25 cm2 geometrical sur/ace.Further subject of investigation was the behavior of magnesium after addition of activators and passivators of the corrosion reaction. We found that KF not only accelerates but also retards the corrosion. These effects depend on the pH,-value of the acid.

Description / Table of Contents: Comparing Exposure Tests on the Corrosion Resistance of Passivated Galvanic zinc coatingsThe results of three years exposure tests on galvanic zinc coatings passivated by 15 different methods are given. The experiments were carried out under different conditions of climate: industry, urban, country and sea climate. There were big differences between the differently passivated coatings though generally a considerable increase of the corrosion resistance could be observed. The most effectfully passivating methods are named. Further result is that there is no good agreement between exposure and accelerated tests. The results show that the most intensive corrosion takes place in industrial climate and decreases in the order urban sea and country climate. It should be mentioned that fairly no dust will be deposited on some chromate coatings. Some coatings remained glittering for longer times, open, till the basic metal was corroded. A comparison of the resistances to corrosion of the differently passivated zinc coatings is given.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of Steel Pipes in Refinary Equipment by Sulfur Rich Crude OilThe crude oil of Nagylengyel contains five and six membered naphtene rings which are fused partly and heterocyclic compounds with sulfur, nitrogen resp. vanadium. The products of thermal decomposition of the crude oil and the overheated water vapor which is added to lower the partial pressure of the oil vapor attack the iron parts of the refinery severely. According to chemical and x-ray investigations the corrosion processes cause the formation of metal sulfides and sulfates as well as oxides of various degrees of oxidation. The corrosion products show differing structures according to the duration of corrosion. After some months there arc several plain covers of rust. After two years a peculiar structure of several layers appears which looks like finger prints. Under the cover the basic metal seems to be ribbed as by etching. The form of this noteworthy corrosion may be discerned by diffusion effects.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the Corrosion of Pressure Pipes and on the Protective MeasuresThe article presents a discussion of the general principles of galvanic cells as they cause many initial corrosion processes. This allows to understand easily the formation of rust on pipes in tunnels. The author gives a short summery of the behavior of different metal parts of a pipeline in a gallery under the influence of percolating water as well as of constant modifications of the conditions of temperature and airation.Furthermore some protective measures are described which were found to be suitable. Finally the properties of a protective coating which consists of several covers of paint, requested to guarrantee durable protection, are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Importance of the Physical Properties of the Soil in Regard to the Mechanisms of the Reactions of Iron in SoilsAmong various factors controlling the velocity of the corrosion of iron in soils, as there are the soil water, the soil air, the pH-value and the electric resistance of the soil, the adhesive power of the soil to water is the most important one. The active and Passive states of iron in soil can be discerned from the theories of soil physicsBy means of model tests with glass balls of different sizes all kinds of contact corrosion can be explained. In a system unsaturated with water pitting might take place. A more uniform and weaker erosion is noticed in saturated soils.Basing on these results the experimental results of the American Bureau of Standards on the velocity of the corrosion of iron in 47 soils in the USA are represented as dependant of the average annual amount of rain.

The author treats deals special effects of corrosion on the inside and the outside of cans such as sulfide staining briefly. The usual effects of corrosion are discussed in detail: they are characterised by the tin-iron couple, in which tin is the anode (in unlacquered cans). The thickness and the porosity of the tin coating play a minor role while the type and characteristics of the steel, the presence of cathodic de-polarizers (like atmospheric oxygen), and the storage temperature, are important factors Lacquering increases corrosion by reducing the surface of the protective anode. The time dependance of the potentials of tin and steel in a couple, and of the output of the cell, seem to be the best means of studying the influences of the various factors; the most recent research is in this direction. So far, however, no laboratory test can replace practical tests.

Description / Table of Contents: On the Importance of the Hydrate of Lime in Cement Mortar an Concrete against Aggression and of its Resistant Setting by Chemical Reactions during Hydration1The evaluation and interpretation of analytic and physical long term experiments with concretes made of Portland and blast furnace cements which were stored in aggressive agents, shows that the results agree to the theory of cements of the author. On this basis the hydration and cementation processes in the mortar beds as well as the causes and the mechanism of the corrosion of concrete are discerned. As the results of several testing methods and of different evaluation principles are agreeing, theoretically, the experimental results are of general and principle importance.2By means of a chemical reation a resistant setting of the hydrate of lime in the liquid phase during hydration was made possible. The so caused inhibition of the primary aggression allowed to increase the resistance of concretes of standard cements to a level never achieved before.

Description / Table of Contents: Documentation and Protection against Corrosion by PaintsThe protection against corrosion by painsts plays an important part in the range of protective methode available.Modern paints differ considerably from those used thirty or even ten years ago.Successive developments require continuous testing. The recording and evaluation of the results of short-term tests in the laboratory, of weathering tests and practical applications are usually unsatisfactory.A significant documentation would enable a successful comparison and interpretation of results to be given. Thus, some directions on how to prepare a documentation are given.Besides the standard DIN 53210 “Determination of the Degree of Rusting” there is a draft on the determination of the quality of a paint coat. Results are collected in card index files.

Description / Table of Contents: Application of Electro-Chemical Measurements to Find the Causes of CorrosionElectro-chemical investigations of materials under operating conditions enable the causes of corrosion damage to be ascertained.Current density voltage curves plotted on half logarithmic paper give information on the kind and the amount of the corrosion currents. There cases which could be cleared up by electro-chemical investigations are discussed. In the first case, the results show that the sensitivity of a steel section depends much more on its chemical composition than on peripheral segregation. The second case demonstrates that technical phosphoric acid weakens the passivation of V4A steel and conditions potentials at which pitting might occur if the surface is not clean. Finally the influence of atmospheric oxygen upon the corrosion current is discussed in the light of electro-chemical investigations. Intakes of air at a leaky stuffing box are considered to have caused the corrosion of a centrifugal pump.

Description / Table of Contents: Glossy and Thick Rhodium CoatingsRhodium has been used for twenty years to prevent the tarnishing of silver goods and silver jewellery. Today, Rhodium finds its applications in engineering too. The 'decorative' coatings are glossy but only 1 micron thick. The 'technological' coatings of thicknesses varying between 2 and 25 microns, are always dull. However, for certain purposes it is desirable to obtain both thick and glossy Rhodium coatings. The author, therefore, examines the effects of various additives: cetain metal salts delay the disappearance of the gloss with a coating thickness of up to 2 microns, but the true gloss-producing agents appear to be active only on the surface. A number of such surfaceactive materials (anion-active, cathion-active and non-ionising) were investigated. Some of these produce glossy coatings with a thickness of far more than 10 microns. In addition, the porosity of the coat and its surface tesion is greatly reduced, the porosity of the coat and its surface tension is greatly reduced and thereby the corrosion resistance of the Rhodium is significantly improved. However, results of these experiments are not entirely consistent and work in this field continues.
