Notes: Abstract: We prove the existence of correlations between the equilibrium states at different temperatures of the multi-p-spin spherical spin-glass models with continuous replica symmetry breaking: there is no chaos in temperature in these models. Furthermore, the overlaps satisfy ultrametric relations. As a consequence the Parisi tree is essentially the same at all temperatures with lower branches developing when lowering the temperature. We conjecture that the reference free energies of the clusters are also fixed at all temperatures as in the generalized random-energy model.

Notes: Abstract: Resistivity measurements have been performed on silicon powder beds with different thicknesses which were submitted to uniaxial pressure (0-640 MPa). For the smallest thicknesses of the Si pellets, the pressure dependence of conductivity may be described using models based on effective medium theory or strongest stresses network. For largest Si thicknesses, it exists an inhomogeneous distribution of pressure in the granular medium as a consequence of arching effects. It is shown that the conductivity variation with Si powder thickness may be understood using a distribution of conductivity induced by the distribution of pressure. Finally, it is shown that the conductivity of the sintered Si pellets is correlated with the uniaxial compression step.

Notes: Abstract: So far the problem of a spin glass on a Bethe lattice has been solved only at the replica symmetric level, which is wrong in the spin glass phase. Because of some technical difficulties, attempts at deriving a replica symmetry breaking solution have been confined to some perturbative regimes, high connectivity lattices or temperature close to the critical temperature. Using the cavity method, we propose a general non perturbative solution of the Bethe lattice spin glass problem at a level of approximation which is equivalent to a one step replica symmetry breaking solution. The results compare well with numerical simulations. The method can be used for many finite connectivity problems appearing in combinatorial optimization.

Notes: Abstract: We study the low-temperature phase of the three-dimensional ± J Ising spin glass in Migdal-Kadanoff approximation. At zero temperature, T = 0, the properties of the spin glass result from the ground-state degeneracy and can be elucidated using scaling arguments based on entropy. The approach to the asymptotic scaling regime is very slow, and the correct exponents are only visible beyond system sizes around 64. At T 〉 0, a crossover from the zero-temperature behaviour to the behaviour expected from the droplet picture occurs at length scales proportional to T -2/ds where ds is the fractal dimension of a domain wall. Canonical droplet behaviour is not visible at any temperature for systems whose linear dimension is smaller than 16 lattice spacings, because the data are either affected by the zero-temperature behaviour or the critical point behaviour.

Notes: Abstract: Macroscopic resistivity measurements have been performed on TiC/Al2O3 random mixtures submitted to uniaxial compression (0-95 kN). Such a random mixture exhibits an insulator-conductor transition which appears at increasing force while decreasing the conductive composition of the TiC/Al2O3 mixture. It is demonstrated that the conductivity behavior may be understood in the framework of a site percolation model. Finally, the rate of creation of the contacts between conductive grains is extracted from the macroscopic resistivity measurements.

Notes: Abstract: The problem of atom diffraction from a reflecting magnetic diffraction grating is solved in the thin phase-grating approximation. The general problem for scalar diffraction is modelled using a semi-classical method in which the grating potential is separated into a reflecting term and a diffracting term. The trajectory of the atom in the reflecting potential is solved classically and the atom wave function in the diffracting potential found by integrating the phase change along the classical trajectory. The diffraction orders are obtained after Fourier transforming the result. This can be done independently of the grating potential resulting in a general formula for the diffraction efficiencies. The general result is applied to the problem of atom diffraction from a magnetic grating. Several approximations are required to reduce the problem to a form amenable to analytic solution. The results are compared with an accurate numerical method.

Notes: Abstract: The diffraction of laser-cooled atoms from a spatially-periodic potential is modelled using rigorous coupled-wave analysis. This numerical technique, normally applied to light-diffraction, is adapted for use with atomic de Broglie waves incident on a reflecting diffraction grating. The technique approximates the potential by a large number of constant layers and successively solves the complex eigenvalue problem in each layer, propagating the solution up to the surface of the grating. The method enables the diffraction efficiencies to be calculated for any periodic potential. The results from the numerical model are compared with the thin phase-grating approximation formulae for evanescent light-wave diffraction gratings and idealised magnetic diffraction gratings. The model is applied to the problem of diffracting Rb atoms from a grating made from an array of permanent magnets.
