Notes:
Many theories of ion-exchange column performance, differing widely in their simplifying assumptions and their results, have been advanced. For successful application it is vital to choose, in each particular case, the most appropriate theory. this requires a thorough general understanding of the phenomena and a precise knowledge of the consequences of the simplifying assumptions. The most important qualitative characteristics of ion-exchange columns are outlined, especially the formtion of self-sharpening and non-sharpening boundaries and of constant and proportionate patterns. The commonly used quantitative theories and calculation methods are then discussed and their adequacy, their shortcomings, and the ranges of their applicability are critically studied.
