    Notes: The flow of a highly rarefied gas in a parallel-plate channel and the transfer of heat owing to simulataneous thermal radiation and free-molecule convection has been investigated analytically. The analysis is facilitated by analogies which exist between the processes. The mass throughflow has been determined as a function of the temperatures and pressures of the system and of the channel dimensions. The heat transfer analysis is first carried out in general and then specialized to the boundary conditions of uniform wall temperature, uniform wall heat flux, and the adiabatic wall. It was found that at temperature levels corresponding to room temperature and above, the results for the combined convective-radiative transport differed little from those for a purely radiative transport.

    Notes: The time-dependent behavior of Newtonian oscillating manometers was studied experimentally and mathematically. The manometers were simulated by numerically integrating the axial component of the equation of motion in cylindrical coordinates. Modifications in the driving-force term were made to include end effects of surface tension and flow reversal. The integrations showed that the velocity profiles in the manometer were not parabolic and contained many maxima and minima, particularly when the fluid had a low viscosity. Good agreement was obtained between experimental and simulation frequencies and damping factors.

    Notes: Interphase mass transfer between carbon dioxide gas and water has been investigated. The physical model used was the laminar concurrent flow of gas and liquid in a wide rectangular channel. Because of the high aspect ratio employed, the model was effectively one of parallel plates of infinite width.Three methods of solving the equations of change - the eigensolution method, the boundary layer theory, and penetration theory - were used to compute the diffusion coefficient of carbon dioxide in water from the experimental data. Calculated values of diffusion coefficients from the penetration theory checked well with those from the eigensolution method, but the values computed from the integrated boundary layer equation were about 10% higher.Results from the eigensolution agreed within 5% with the data of other investigators in the temperature range of 20° to 30°C.

    Notes: A complete analytical solution is developed for the number of equilibrium stages in separations processes for which operating and equilibrium lines are not necessarily straight. The resulting equations are solutions of a Riccati difference equation and are applied to liquid-liquid extraction and the distillation of a binary mixture where the liquid and vapor flows are not constant because of the variation of the saturated liquid and vapor enthalpies with concentration. A specific example is given for the separation of ethyl alcohol and water in which the equilibrium curve is highly nonlinear and where a large number of plates are required in a pinch region. Another example is given for the extraction of methylcyclopentane from its solution in n-hexane using aniline as a selective solvent.

    Notes: Data are reported for mass transfer from a flat plate under the influence of a laminar, radial wall jet initiated by a free jet of water.Present theory has been extended to mass transfer for the case of the above wall jet. An exact solution of the mass transport equation was obtained as well as an approximate solution of the integral mass balance equation, using assumed forms of the velocity and concentration profiles.Point mass transfer data were obtained by measuring the thickness decrease of coatings of acetanilide and benzoic acid. In the Reynolds number range of 1,000 to 3,000 (based on the nozzle diameter) data were in good agreement with theory. Boundary-layer separation and the formation of a toroidal vortex were observed at lower Reynolds numbers. Dye streak photographs of these vortices were obtained and correlated with mass transfer data in this region.

    Notes: An approximate solution to the problem of freezing of an isotropic, semi-infinite slab is proposed for the situation where Newton's cooling at the surface of the slab applies. Comparison with the existing exact solution shows the approximate solution to be practical.The heat-balance integral method is used with the assumptionof linear temperature distribution in the frozen zone and of a parabolic temperature profile in the liquid zone. The final expression for the depth of solidification, however, seems to be only little affected by the particular temperature profiles chosen.

    Notes: The absorption of carbon dioxide in pure diethanolamine was studied in a gas-liquid stirred reactor at 85°, 95°, and 105°F. Over forty runs were made but only nineteen were reported here since several were invalidated by difficulties with the stirring mechanism and reaction-temperature control. The absorption was followed by pressure-time measurements with the carbon dioxide pressure ranging between 30 and 4 cm. of mercury. Experimental data were consistent and reproducible.An equation describing the gas-liquid absorption system was derived and then simplified by considering only the kinetic region. The experimental data were correlated with the simplified equation by both integral and differential methods and indicate that the reaction follows a third-order rate equation: first order in carbon dioxide and second order in diethanolamine. A mechanism explaining the observed order is described.Justification for assuming kinetic control of the absorption was demonstrated by doubling and tripling the stirring speed which produced no significant change in the absorption rate. Also, the temperature dependence of the pseudo-rate constants was out of the range of ordinary mass transfer control. This agrees with the results of a theoretical model reported previously (6).

    Notes: Theoretical and experimental work is described which leads to a novel hypothesis for explaining the selectivity in heterogeneous vapor phase hydrocarbon oxidation catalysis. Two essential postulates of the hypothesis are: The oxygen atoms must be distributed on the surface of a selective oxidation catalyst in an arrangement which provides for limitation of the number of active oxygen atoms in various isolated groups.The metal-oxygen bond energy of the active oxygen atoms, at the conditions of reaction, must be in a range where rapid removal (hydrocarbon oxidation) and addition (regeneration by oxygen) is assured. Monte Carlo methods are used to illustrate the distribution of isolated sites on catalytic surfaces under the dynamic conditions of hydrocarbon oxidation reactions. Differences in catalyst and process requirements between oxidation processes operating in an overall oxidizing or reducing atmosphere are discussed.

    Notes: Bubbles were formed in water when air was passed through a single square-edged orifice which had been drilled in a glass plate. The glass plate was 0.05 in. thick, and the orifice diameter was 1/8 in. The air chambers above the liquid surface and below the orifice plate were varied. The extreme values of these volumes were 0.00975 and 0.195 cu. ft. The air rate through the orifice, Q was as great as 200 × 10-5 cu. ft./sec. Bubble frequencies, f, were as great as 16 sec.-1Both the upper and lower chamber volume influenced markedly the relationship between f and Q. A relationship that predicts sets of upper and lower chamber volumes that result in the same f vs. Q relation is given. A two-parameter equation that gives f as a function of Q is presented.Wettability of the orifice plate and the liquid depth over the orifice plate were also considered as independent variables.

Data at 80 psia and 55°C., using 0.5 wt. % palladium on ⅛″ Al2O3 spheres as a catalyst, indicated that the mass transfer of dissolved hydrogen to the catalyst surface controlled the rate of conversion of styrene to cumene. Hence the data were employed to calculate mass transfer coefficients as a function of pulse frequency and amplitude.Comparison with non-pulse data at the same Reynolds number showed that pulsation increased the mass transfer rate as much as 80%.

    Notes: The volumetric properties of sixteen fluids of interest in cryogenic engineering have been used to calculate second virial coefficients over as large a temperature range as possible. These coefficients were then fitted to theoretical expressions based on the Kihara potential function. For helium, hydrogen, and neon quantum corrections were applied. For nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and acetylene corrections for quadrupole interactions were made. It was found that the theoretical expressions give an extremely good fit of all reliable experimental datu. The theoretical expressions may therefore be used with confidence to predict volumetric behavior at very low temperatures where data are frequently unavailable.With the aid of semiempirical mixing rules the theoretical expressions may be used to predict second virial coefficients for mixtures. Agreement with the very limited amount of experimental mixture data is satisfactory. Finally it is shown that calculations based on the Kihara potential may be employed to make useful predictions of phase equilibria such as the solubility of a solid in a compressed gas.

    Notes: When two liquid phases are contacted in a stirred tank reactor, dispersed phase mixing can affect average reaction rate and product selectivity in nonfirst order or mass transfer controlled reactions, as shown theoretically in Part I. This work is concerned with experimental measurement of the dispersed phase mixing rate. Various organic phase dispersions in water were studied in stirred tanks with a dye transfer light transmission technique. Batch experiments were performed in 0.30, 5.5, and 86-gal. vessels. The variables studied were power input per unit volume, phase fraction, impeller type, and vessel scale. Dispersed phase mixing rates were found to be in the range where they can have significant effects on chemical reactions. A typical value of the mixing rate is 10 volumes of dispersed phase/min. at a power input of 10 hp./1,000 gal. The information given here and in Part I shows for the first time the importance of these effects in reactor design.

    Notes: The rate of permeation of hydrogen through a highly purified iron (Ferrovac E) was measured over a pressure range of 1/30 to 300 atm. and a temperature range of 126° to 693°C. The effect of cold working of the annealed metal and of hydrogen purity were also studied. Permeability, diffusivity, and solubility were obtained from the data. Permeation rate was linear with square root of fugacity rather than pressure. No difference in φ or D between the annealed and cold worked tube was observed. Log D vs. 1/T was linear over the whole range of temperature, in disagreement with recent work showing a break in the plot at about 400°C. The calculated activation energy was lower than values reported in the literature. Solubility agreed well with most previous work and did not show the break in the solubility vs. temperature curve found by some recent investigators. No ageing effect was observed nor any difference between the two grades of hydrogen. All the evidence shows that diffusion through the metal is the controlling rate process in this case.

    Notes: Both the rheological and the hindered-settling characteristics of small particle size suspensions (0.1 to 50 μ) are primarily determined by the degree of flocculation and the concentration of the suspension. Previous studies have shown that when the laminar shear diagrams are fitted by the Bingham plastic model, the parameters τy/φ3 and φ-1 In η/μ are constants which are proportional to the degree of flocculationThe present study showed that these rheological parameters were proportional to the value of α determined from the hindered-settling measurements (α is defined as the ratio of the volume of fluid immobilized by the floc structure to the volume of solids in the floc structure). The materials studied included suspensions of thorium oxide in water and methanol and of titania, kaolin, alumina, and graphite in water. The particle size range was from 0.40 to 17.0 μValues of the attractive force between particles calculated from the rheological and hindered-settling data were in good agreement with each other and with the theoretical values calculated from the Derjaguin-Verwey-Overbeek theory of colloid stability. The good agreement among the different values suggests that the present approach may be generally applicable to a variety of different systems.

    Notes: If the temperature level or free stream reactant concentration is deliberately changed, the resulting change in the observed global reaction rate on a catalytic surface in a flow system will not necessarily reflect the true chemical kinetics at the fluid/solid interface. General expressions, reminiscent of those applicable to a static system, are derived for the relation between the diffusional falsification of activation energy and reaction order in terms of a logarithmic derivative of the isothermal diffusion correction (effectiveness factor). Approximate solutions are given for the case of the thin, nonturbulent diffusion layer which develops along an impermeable catalytic flat plate, for arbitrary values of the true reaction order and Prandtl number for diffusion (Schmidt number). Comparisons with exact solutions to the boundary-layer equations and alternate approximate methods are given for the special case of first-order surface reactions. Of the various quantities of interest in the diffusional theory of heterogeneous reactions in flow systems, it is shown that the accuracy of the Frank-Kamenetskii quasi-stationary method can become unacceptably poor for the calculation of these falsification parameters. The physicochemical conditions under which these errors are likely to be largest are discussed. Applications are given to the study of the chemical kinetics of fast surface reactions.

    Notes: Microorganisms undergo a cycle of maturation during their life-span in a proliferating culture. This gives rise to a distribution of degrees of cellular maturation in the culture. The gross rate of any metabolic process carried on by the culture is therefore an average over all degrees of maturation present.Equations embodying the life-cycle concept are developed for cultures of organisms which proliferate by binary fission and do not form spores. The equations are solved for the age distribution in the special case of a continuous, steady state fermentation. Expressions for calculating gross metabolic rates and cell size distributions are derived. Finally, the stability of the steady state fermentor is discussed.

    Notes: This paper deals with a new concept for predicting burnout conditions for forced convection of boiling water in fuel elements of nuclear boiling reactors.The concept states the importance of considering the ratio of heated channel perimeter to total channel perimeter.The perimeter ratio concept was arrived at from an experimental study of burnout conditions in rod clusters consisting of three rods of 13 mm. outside diameter and 830 mm. heated length. Data were obtained for pressures between 2.5 and 10 kg./sq. cm., surface heat fluxes between 50 and 120 W./ sq. cm., mass flow rates between 0.03 and 0.33 kg./sec., and steam qualities between 0.01 and 0.52.The rod clearance for the experiment were 2 and 6 mm. The diameter of the channel was 41.3 mm. Additional runs were also performed after unheated displacement rods were introduced in the channel. The rod clearance in this case was 6 mm.In the ranges investigated the measured burnout steam qualities at the outlet of the channel decrease with increasing heat flux and decreasing pressure. Furthermore it has been found that the influence of rod clearance is, in the range investigated, of small significance for engineering purposes.It has also been observed that the present burnout steam quality data for the rod clusters are much lower than those earlier obtained for round ducts. This may be explained physically by means of the perimeter ratio concept.It has also been found that the surface shear stress distribution around the channel perimeter and especially the position of maximum shear stress is of great importance for predicting burnout conditions for flow in channels.Finally the new method has helped in understanding and interpreting experimental results which earlier may have seemed inconsistent.

A graphical and numerical technique was used to derive the enthalpy differences from 100° to 460°F. and 200 to 2,000 lb./sq. in. abs. for the complete composition range of the binary.The isothermal effects of pressure and composition on the mixture enthalpy data of the methane-propane binary were also calculated with the Benedict-Webb-Rubin and the Redlich-Kwong equations of state. The results of the three methods of calculation are compared. The comparison showed that the two-constant Redlich-Kwong equation of state is as good as the eight-constant Benedict equation of state in the superheated vapor region.The data derived in this work were combined with other methane binary enthalpy data from the literature to construct a general correlation of the effect of pressure and composition on the enthalpy of methane-light hydrocarbon binaries. The correlating parameters are the pseudo reduced temperature and pressure and a mole-average acentric factor.

However the carbon-carbon-dioxide reaction has the kinetic rate form, rate = k1pCO2/(1 + k2pCO + k3pCO2). For conditions where the retarding effect of carbon monoxide is very pronounced, the buildup of small concentrations of carbon monoxide within the porous graphite can lead to appreciable nonuniformity of gasification. Thus the criteria normally used to predict uniformity of gasification break down. A numerical integration of the combined differential equation of mass transport and chemical reaction has been performed, with rate constants for the carbon-carbon dioxide reaction taken from the literature. The results indicate that extreme nonuniformity of reaction can exist even when the change in carbon dioxide concentration from the exterior of the sample to the interior is small. The results are similar to experimental determinations of non-uniformity of gasification, obtained by determining the porosity of reacted graphite samples as a function of depth from the reacting face. Experimentally nonuniformity of reaction was observed for gasification rates a hundredfold lower than the usual Thiele criteria would predict, probably because of carbon monoxide inhibition.

    Notes: Unpacked pipes or tubes, commonly called flow reactors, are often desirable for carrying out homogeneous reactions. Unless these reactors are properly designed and operated, axial mixing will alter both the rate of conversion and the distribution of products from successive reactions. Several hypothetical reaction schemes are analyzed here to show how axial mixing affects the production of an intermediate. The analysis represents mixing by an axial diffusion coefficient and is valid when mixing is not extreme. Results from several particular cases are compared, showing that reactor-product distribution is generally distorted in proportion to a reactor Peclet number. G. I. Taylor's theory of axial mixing is used to relate this Peclet number to the physical characteristics of the reactorAlthough the effects of axial mixing are concluded to be negligible in most commercial or large-scale equipment, they are serious in the case of experimental or pilot-scale apparatus. Charts are drawn to illustrate design problems for these reactors.

    Notes: In the manufacture of catalyst pellets from particles of powder, for example alumina, one of the parameters is pellet density. The opposing effects of density on surface available for reaction and on pore diffusion result in a specific pellet density for maximum reaction rate per unit volume of reactor. The method for predicting the optimum density and rate is presented for a first-order reaction. The data required are pore volumes and pore-size distributions as a function of density, as well as kinetic measurements. Such data are available for the ortho-para hydrogen reaction using a nickel oxide-on-alumina catalyst. Using this system as an illustration, it can be seen that the optimum effectiveness factors are less than unity and range from about 0.68 for 1/8-in. diam. spherical catalyst pellets to 0.29 for 1-in. pellets. Corresponding optimum densities are from about 1.3 to 0.6 g./ccThe results demonstrate the possibility of a tailor-made pelleted catalyst for optimum reaction rate.

    Notes: Mass diffusion studies were carried out in a diaphragm diffusion cell with the liquid system methyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, isobutyl alcohol. Experiments were conducted over a wide range of separating agent counterflow. The separation factor was approximately doubled and the yield decreased three orders of magnitude when the counterflow was increased one order of magnitude. Using the four ternary diffusion coefficients for the system and a diaphragm geometry based on previous calibration, the concentration and separation factors could be predicted within the range of experimental error. The theory indicates that at high counterflow considerably larger separation factors would be obtained if the diaphragm were uniform.

    Notes: The prediction of vapor-liquid equilibria with the Benedict-Webb-Rubin (BWR) equation of state has been restudied. It was found that the suitability of the equation of state to represent fully the behavior of the constituents is the main factor which affects the accuracy of the prediction. To improve the representation of the pure component data by means of equation of state it is necessary to modify the present form of the BWR equation of state. A tentative form of modification of the BWR equation of state has been chosen. Although the modified equation is still subject to further evaluation and refinement, satisfactory results have been obtained for the prediction of four binary systems containing nitrogen and carbon dioxide (nitrogen-methane. methane-carbon dioxide, propane-carbon dioxide, and n-butane-carbon dioxide).The method of nonlinear estimation has been used to fit the coefficients in the equation of state to either vapor-pressure data or P-V-T data.

    Notes: A method of predicting the critical pressures of multicomponent hydrocarbon mixtures of known composition has been developed. These mixtures include ternary, quaternary, and quinary systems consisting of normal and isoparaffins, olefins, acetylenes, naphthenes, and aromatics. The method, based upon the mole fraction of the low-boiling component in the mixture, graphically presents the ratio of the actual critical pressure to the pseudocritical pressure as a function of a boiling parameter. For mixtures of more than two components the pseudocritical pressure is based on the critical pressure of the pure low-boiling component and on the actual critical pressure of the mixture consisting of all the remaining higher-boiling components. From an analysis of twenty-seven binary systems (139 compositions) the average deviation of calculated values from reported values is 1.27%. For thirty-four mixtures containing from three to seven components the average deviation is 1.64%.Based upon a similar approach graphical relationships are presented for the estimation of the critical molar density of binary hydrocarbon mixtures of known composition, which also may contain normal and isoparaffins, olefins, nuphthenes, and aromatics. The same boiling point parameter is used to correlate the ratio of the critical density to the reciprocal of the molar average critical volume for nonmethane systems and the product of the critical pressure and the critical volume for methane systems. From an analysis of fifteen binary systems (eighty compositions) the average deviation of calculated values form reported values is 1.54%.

The porous spheres were approximately ⅝ in. in diameter. The void fraction of the packed bed was ∊ = 0.416, and the distended beds, whose spheres were positioned in a body-centered cubic arrangement, had respective void fractions of ∊ = 0.576 and 0.778. The distended beds were formed by separating the spheres and connecting them with short lengths of fine rigid wire.Similar relationships for the packed and the distended fixed beds were obtained when the transfer factors were related to the modified Reynolds number. The relationship obtained for mass transfer in packed and distended beds was found to apply to data reported for fluidized beds of spheres.Pressure drop measurements were made which were not exacting but which indicate that the Ergun relationship for packed beds can be used to relate the friction factor to the modified Reynolds number for both the packed and distended beds investigated.

    Notes: Pressure drop measurements were made across packed and distended beds having five layers of smooth plastic spheres, 1.23 in. in diamter, arranged in cubic, body-centered cubic, and face-centered cubic orientations of void fractions varying from 0.354 to 0.882. The distended beds were prepared by separating the spheres with permanently attached short lengths of fine rigid wire. Friction factors were calculated from the overall pressure drop measurements with the Ergun equation and were plotted against the corresponding modified Reynolds number which ranged from 2,550 to 64,900. A single relationship resulted for both types of beds which is independent of the geometric orientation and void fraction of the spheres of the bed.To eliminate entrance and exit effects of the air flowing through the bed pressure drop measurements were also made across the middle layer of each distended bed. Again a single relationship between the corresponding friction factors and modified Reynolds number was obtained which is independent of the geometric orientation and void fraction of the bed.From the two relationships between friction factors and modified Reynolds number the ratio Pk/fk for a packed or distended bed having five layers of spheres is 1.13. This ratio should decrease with increasing number of layers of spheres and approach the limiting value of 1 when the number of layers becomes very large.

    Notes: The unsteady state flow of ammonia gas has been investigated to determine its viscosity at elevated pressures and moderate temperatures. This was accomplished in an experimental unit of the transpiration type which was calibrated with nitrogen, for which viscosity data at high pressures were available in the literature. To obtain the viscosity at the operating conditions the basic differential equation for the unsteady state flow caused by the experimental procedure was developed and solved with an IBM-650 digital computer.Experimental runs were conducted for pressures ranging from 250 to 5,000 lb./sq. in. and temperatures from 100° to 200°C. This information has been used to establish the viscosity of ammonia at these dense phase conditions for which no viscosities had been previously reported. These values were used to develop a unique correlation between the residual viscosity and the density. This correlation then enabled the determination of ammonia's viscosity at the critical point μc = 2,395×10-5 centipoises.The Enskog viscosity equation has been used with the values resulting from this study and PVT data for ammonia to develop a relationship for the probability of nearness. This relationship enables viscosities to be calculated for densities up to 0.450 g./cc. which are in close agreement with the experimental values.

    Notes: The permeation rate of hydrogen through cylindrical membranes of type 321 stainless steel was determined under a wide range of conditions. The pressure was varied from 0.1 to 30.0 atm. and the temperature from 300° to 800°C. Four permeation membranes were used with wall thicknesses of 0.0252, 0.1003, 0.1011, and 0.2475 cm.The permeation rate was found to deviate from the square-root-of-pressure and inverse-thickness relations predicted by the Richardson equation. Slow surface reactions are considered to be the cause of the observed deviations. The permeation data were correlated by a semiempirical interfacial resistance model.Permeation rates were observed to increase with time of membrane exposure to hydrogen. It is believed this resulted from changing surface activity.

    Notes: Enthalpies of components in ideal gas mixtures can be computed from existing data. However the isothermal effects of pressure and composition on partial enthalpies of mixture components have not been completely characterized. An investigation of the application of the Redlich-Kwong equation of state to the calculation of partial enthalpies is reported here. Methods are developed for convenient hand calculations and for computations on the IBM-650.Calculated partial enthalpies are compared with values derived from experimental P-V-T-C data for binary hydrocarbon mixtures. The calculated values agree fairly well with the derived data for pressures up to 2,500 lb./sq. in. abs. Best agreement is generally obtained when the mixture is well above the critical temperature of the more abundant component. No consistent bias was indicated however.

    Notes: Critical flow of two-phase steam-water mixtures in annuli has been studied, with a cylindrical test section 0.574 in. in diameter with an axially centered rod, 0.137 or 0.375 in. O.D., as a pressure probe. Pressure taps on the wall and the center rod permitted an accurate determination of the pressure profile over the entire length of the section, and, in cases where a movable probe was used, a short distance into the downstream exhaust chamber. Results were correlated by plotting the ratio of the observed critical mass velocity to the theoretical critical mass velocity for homogeneous flow as a function of quality.Exit pressures were found to be lower than most values previously reported. The ratio GO/GTh was found to be independent of the probe diameter, the manner of upstream steam-water mixing, and, for test sections greater than 9 in. in length, the test section length. Since probe diameter had no observable effect on GO/GTH, the correlation may be applicable to full bore pipes near 1/2 in. in diameter. In the range of qualities from 2 to 15% the critical GO/GTH ratio was depressed with increasing exit (throat) pressure, but at other qualities no pressure dependency was noted. The effect of changing the downstream exhaust chamber pressure was found to influence the exit pressure but to have little effect on the observed critical mass velocity. Addition of surface active agents to the steam-water mixture did not affect the mass velocity but did result in increased exit pressure.
