Das Ausscheiden von Berylliumhydroxyd aus konzentrierteren alkalischen Lösungen läßt sich ohne Annahme eines kolloiden Zustandes des Berylliumhydroxyds erklären, und die Frage, die OSTWALD in seinen „Grundlinien“ S. 564 aufwirft, wo er sagt:„Läßt man eine alkalische Lösung (von Berylliumhydroxyd) lange stehen oder erhitzt sie zum Sieden, so verliert sie fast alles Berylliumhydroxyd, welches sich ausscheidet. Hier entsteht die Frage, wodurch das chemische Gleichgewicht, das vorher bestanden hatte, nun gestört wird, da doch kein neuer Stoff hinzugekommen ist. Die Antwort ist dahin zu geben, daß das ausgeschiedene Berylliumhydroxyd eine andere, und zwar beständigere und weniger lösliche Form des Hydroxyds darstellt als die frisch gefällte, die in Alkalien löslich ist. Es ist mit anderen Worten die frische Lösung in bezug auf die neue Form des Hydroxyds übersättigt und kann sich deshalb nicht halten, wenn diese Form zugegen ist. Da die neue Form in den frisch hergestellten Lösungen nicht vorhanden ist so kann die Ausscheidung erst beginnen, nachdem sich die ersten Spuren davon gebildet haben. Dies geschieht langsam bei Zimmertemperatur, schnell in der Warme“ konnte auch experimentell beantwortet werden mit dem Ergebnisse, daß: 1das Berylliumhydrat bei Zimmertemperatur in drei Modifikationen existiert \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ ({\rm A = H}_{\rm 2} {\rm Be}_{\rm 2} {\rm O}_{\rm 3},{\rm B = H}_{\rm 2} {\rm BeO}_2 {\rm, C = H}_{\rm 2} {\rm BeO}_{\rm 2})\,{\rm und} $$\end{document}2daß von diesen Hydraten das Hydrat A am unbeständigsten und am löslichsten ist. Aus dem Hydrat A bilden sich unter dem Einfluß der Zeit neue Modifikationen B und C, die beständiger und weniger löslich sind.3Die drei Hydrate wirken gegen starke Laugen als zweibasische Säuren unter Bildung von Beryllaten.
