    Description / Table of Contents: On the Cathodic Protection in Soils by the Galvanic Method IThe electrode processes on short circuited electrodes of iron and zinc respectively magnesium being immersed into aired and not aired soils are described. According to the degree of saturation of water of the soil an increased velocity of solution of the iron to be protected could be observed in water unsaturated soils. If the saturation limit of the soil is transgressed a decreased velocity of solution of the iron to be protected could be expected. The periodical changes of the water saturation of the soil causes an noticeable effect on the corrosion of the iron to be protected. The rate of Corrosion is proportional to the sum of the duration of the periods if the soil is water unsaturated.
    Notes: Es werden die Elektrodenvorgänge an Eisen und Zink bzw. Magnesium, die in einem belüfteten und unbelüfteten Boden eingetaucht und miteinander kurzgeschlossen sind, beschrieben. Je nach dem Sättigungszustand des Bodens an Wasser läßt sich eine größere Auflösungsgeschwindigkeit des zu schützenden Eisens in einem an Wasser ungesättigten Boden beobachten. Wird die Sättigungsgrenze des Bodens überschritten, ist mit einem verminderten Inlösungsgehen des zu schützenden Eisens zu rechnen. Der periodische Austausch der Sättigung des Bodens an Wasser übt einen merklichen Einfluß auf die Korrosion des zu schützenden Eisens aus; die Korrosion des Eisens ist proportional der Summe der Länge der Perioden, wenn der Boden an Wasser ungesättigt ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Problem of the Inter-Crystal-line Corrosion as well as the Corrosion under Tension of Homogeneous Copper-Gold and Copper-Zinc und of Precipitable Aluminum-Zinc-Magnesium Mixed CrystalsMixed crystal specimens of gold and copper-with a content of 10-90 per cent by atomic weight of gold - as well as of copper and zinc - with a content of 63-80 per cent by weight of copper were made. After they had been kept for certain times under mercury their tensile strength was determined to investigate the conditions under which the tensile corrosion of homogeneous mixed crystals occurs and to find a theory of the formation of cracks. If the tensile test is carried out in the presence of mercury you could observe a big decrease of tensile strength. Its amount depends on the concentration of mixed crystals and has a maximum at 50 per cent by atomic weight. The same effect could be produced also by chemical agents. But in this case the effect is limited to the not noble side of the mixed crystal system. As this decrease of tensile strength does not take place with pure metals one might think that the grainboundaries of mixed crystals systems have an increased reactivity which must be considered to produce the sensitivity to corrosion under tensile strength. The formation of cracks during corrosion processes under tensile strength could be explained by the fact that the corrosive agents reacts more intensely upon deformed materials as their reactivity under deformation will be much higher.
    Notes: Um die Bedingungen, unter denen Spannungskorrosion an homogenen Mischkristallen auftritt, zu ermitteln und einen Mechanismus der Rißbildung zu entwickeln, wird von Gold-Kupfer-Mischkristallproben mit 10 bis 90 At.-% Gold und Kupfer-Zink-Mischkristallproben mit 63 bis 90 Gew.-% Kupfer, nachdem sie verschieden lange unter Quecksilber gelagert worden sind, die Zugfestigkeit bestimmt. Erfolgt dabei der Zugversuch unter Anwesenheit des Quecksilbers, so beobachtet man einen hohen Festigkeits-abfall, der von der Mischkristallkonzentration abhängt und bei 50 At.-% am größten ist. Der gleiche Effekt wird auch von chemischen Agenzien ausgelöst, doch beschränkt er sich hier auf die unedle Seite des Mischkristallsystems. Da an reinen Metallen dieser Festigkeitsabfall nicht auftritt, wird auf eine erhöhte Reaktionsfähigkeit der Mischkristallkorngrenze geschlossen, die als Ursache der Spannungskorrosionsempfindlichkeit anzusehen ist. Die bei der Spannungskorrosion auftretende Rißbildung ist dabei darauf zurückzuführen, daß das Korrosionsmittel stets mit einem sich plastisch verformenden Material reagiert, dessen Reaktionsfähigkeit während des Verformungsvorganges stark erhöht ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Problem of the Inter-Crystalline Corrosion as well as the Corrosion under Tension of Homogeneous Copper-Gold and Copper-Zinc und of Precipitable Aluminum-Zinc-Magnesium Mixed CrystalsAfter the sensitivity to corrosion under tensile strength of homogeneous alloys and the mechanism of the formation of cracks could have been cleared in the first section of this work, the properties of precipitable alloys were investigated. Corrosion tests under constant tensile strength of an Aluminium - zinc - magnesium - alloy in a 3 per cent aqueous NaCl - solution with 0,1 per cent H2O2 are described. The effect of an addition of chrome and the influence of heat treatments, homogenizing temperatures, retarded chilling an storage at room temperature between homogenizing and tempering upon the sensitivity to corrosion under tensile strength were investigated. The results allow to suggest some measures to achieve sufficient protection against corrosion under tensile strength.
    Notes: Nachdem die Spannungskorrosionsempfindlichkeit homogener Legierungen und dabei insbesondere der Rißmechanismus im ersten Teil der Untersuchungen weitgehend geklärt werden konnten, werden nun die verhältnisse bei ausscheidungsfähigen Legierungen untersucht. Es werden Spannungskorrosionversuche unter konstanter Zugbeanspruchung an einer Aluminium-Zink-Magnesium-Legierung in 3%iger wäßriger NaCl-Lösung mit 0,1% H2O2 beschrieben. Dabei werden besonders die Wirkung eines Chrom-Zusatzes, der Einfluß von Wärmebehandlung, Homogenisierungstemperatur, verzögerter Abschreckung und einer Auslagerung bei Raumtemperatur zwischen Homogenisieren und Anlaßbehandlung auf die Spannungskorrosionsempfindlichkeit eingehend untersucht und die Wege aufzeigt, um einen hinreichenden Schutz gegen Spannungskorrosion zu erreichen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Are Lead Colors Becoming Superfluous in Rust Prevention?Cathodic protection occupies a favorate position under the modern methods to prevent rusting. Because of their insufficient mechanical properties anodic Zn and Al coatings are but no substitutes for lead colors. Under the passivating paints minium is still of special importance as it serves paint systems of high pH-values by forming not swelling lead soaps. According to recent investigations the electrochemical properties of minium are influencing its protective value effectively. The German Federal Railways regard minium blends to be more reliable than dubious novelties.
    Notes: Unter den neueren Rostschutz-Methoden nimmt der„Kathodenschutz“ eine bevorzugte Stellung ein.  -  Anodische Zn- und Al-Überzüge sind jedoch wegen mangelnder mechanischer Widerstandskraft kein Ersatz für Bleifarbenanstriche. Unter den „passivierenden“ Anstrichstoffen kommt der Bleimennige nach wie vor besondere Bedeutung zu, da sie dank ihrer Befähigung zur Bildung quellungsbeständiger „Bleiseifen“ und anderer Vorzüge ein Anstrich-System von hohem pH-Wert gewährleistet. Auf Grund neueren Untersuchungen sind die elektrochemischen Eigenschaften der Bleimennige auf deren Schutzwert von besonderem Einfluß. Die Bundesbahn hält selbst die Bleifarben-Verschnitte noch für zuverlässiger als zweifelhafte Neuerungen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Chemical Reactions of Tin and their Effects upon Tin Plate CansThe behavior of tin and tin plate under atmospheric conditions and the problems of the corrosion of the outside coat of tin plate cans are discussed. some measures to prevent this corrosion are given. The effects of acids as well as of sour foods upon tin and tin plate were investigated. Pitting, hydrogen swell and polarity change of the system tin-iron by the formation of complex tin salts are treated. In the same way the different effects of alkaline substances are described. sulfide discolorations by sulfide containing or sulfide forming substances as well as a number of neutral agents which react upon tin plate are discussed. at the end some relation between corrosion effects and the quality of steel sheets, the tinning and the lacquering of tin plate cans are indicated.
    Notes: Behandelt wird das Verhalten von Zinn und Weißblech unter atmosphärischen Einflüssen. Daran anknüpfend wird das Problem der Außenkorrosion von Weißblechdosen erörtert und Ratschläge zu ihrer Verhinderung gegeben. Die Wirkung von Säuren sowie von sauren Konservierungsgütern auf Zinn und Weißblech wird eingebend untersucht. Lochfraß, Wasserstoffbombage und Umkehr der Polarität des Zinn-Eisensystems durch Zinnkomplexbildner werden behandelt. Desgleichen werden die verschiedenen Korrosionserscheinungen durch alkalisch wirkende Substanzen dargestellt. Sulfidverfärbungen durch sulfide enthaltende oder Sulfid abspaltende Stoffe werden unter den verschiedensten Bedingungen besprochen; desgleichen eine Reihe von neutralen Stoffen, die Weißblech angreifen können. Abschließend werden einige Hinweise über Stablblechqualität, Verzinnungsart und Lackierung von Weißblechdosen in Bezug auf Korrosionserscheinungen gegeben.

    Description / Table of Contents: Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastics in the Chemical IndustryThe Materials, production and properties of glass fiber reinforced plastics which are gaining increasing application as semifinished products and molded bodies in numerous branches of chemical technology and which are distinguished by their extraordinary mechanical, thermal and chemical properties, are exactly re- viewed. The common and well known methods and especially the modern special processes of production (enveloping of molds with straightened glass semipro- ducts under mechanic tension, production of semifinished products under preliminary stretching during the hardening of the resin, use of special synthetic resins which shrink at cooling very little, use of soft deformable interlayers) are described as frankly as in detail. Numerous phothographs of smaller and bigger establishments are'telling of the achieved success of glass fiber reinforced plastics in the USA.
    Notes: Es wird ein ausführlicher Überblick über Aufbaustoffe, Herstellung und Eigenschaften der glasfaserverstärkten Kunststoffe gegeben, die in den verschiedenen Zweigen der chemischen Technik in Form von Halbzeug und Formkörpern zunehmende Verwendung finden und sich durch besondere mechanische, thermische und chemische Eigenschaften auszeichnen. Neben den üblichen und bekannten Herstellungsverfahren erfahren auch die modernen Spezialverfahren (Bewickeln der Form mit gerichtetem Glas-Halbzeug unter mechanischer Spannung, Herstellung von Halbzeug unter Vorreckung der Fasern während der Aushärtung des Harzes, Verwendung spezieller Kunstharze, die beim Abkühlen nur in geringem Maße schrumpfen, Verwendung weicher deformierbarer Zwischenschichten) eine ebenso ausführliche wie offene Darstellung. Für die in USA auf dem Gebiete der glasfaserverstärkten Kunststoffe erzielten Erfolge sprechen zahlreiche im Bild wiedergegebene kleinere und größere Anlagen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Synthetic Organic Materials in Food IndustryBecause of their favorable corrosive behavior the synthetic materials of organic nature, the so called plastics, are gaining increasing use for the construction of containers and pipelines as well as for packing in food industry. In contrary to the metals the corrosion of plastics is not a pure surface phenomenon as it is influenced by diffusion as well as by penetration effects. The complicated composition of most victuals suggests to judge the possibilities of use of plastics not only by their behavior upon the most important chemical agents but by the reactions taking place between the plastic and the food concerned in its original composition. The results o f such series of tests which have been carried out to a great extent in the institute are represented in chart form.
    Notes: Infolge ihres günstigen Korrosionsverhaltens finden die künstlichen Werkstoffe organischer Natur, die sogenannten Plaste oder Kunststoffe, steigende Verwendung beim Bau von Behältern und Rohrleitungen sowie als Verpackungsmaterialien in der Lebensmittelindustrie. Im Gegensatz zu den Metallen ist jedoch hier der ablaufende Korrosionsvorgang keine reine Oberflächenerscheinung, sondern er wird durch Diffusions- und Penetrationserscheinungen beeinflußt.Die komplexe Zusammensetzung der meisten Lebensmittel läßt es geraten erscheinen, sich bei der Beuteilung der Einsatzmöglichkeiten nicht auf das Verhalten gegenüber den wichtigsten chemischen Agenzien zu beschränken, sondern vielmehr die Veränderungen im Kontakt mit den betreffenden Lebensmitteln in der originalen Zusammensetzung zu registrieren. Eine Tabelle gibt die Resultate solcher Versuchsreihen, die zum großen Teil im Institut für Kunststoffe durchgeführt wurden, wieder.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion by Sulfuric AcidCorrosion tests over the whole range of concentration and temperature up to the atmospheric boiling point have been carried out on high alloyed Cr-Ni-Mo-Cu-steels, recommended because of their sulfuric acid resistance, and modern Mo-containing nickel alloys. The corrosion data are represented in chart form. The corrosion resistance regions are delineated by isocorrosion lines.All the Cr-Ni-Mo-Cu-steels show about the same behavior in more than 50 percent sulfuric acid solutions. In this region they are of limited use but in solutions of lower concentrations they are technically applicable even up to higher temperatures. The limits of use depend in general on their content of nickel.The high alloyed nickel alloys prove generally increased sulfuric acid resistance. In contrary to all the other tested materials the Ni-Mo-alloy 70/30 (Euzonit 70) shows its best sulfuric acid resistance in the concentration region of about 80 percent even up to relatively high temperatures. This behavior is explained as to be caused by the low content of iron. The effect of chrome in alloys is obviously very similar to that of iron.
    Notes: Mit den hochlegierten Cr-Ni-Mo-Cu-Stählen, welche insbesondere bei Schwefelsäureangriff empfohlen werden, und mit modernen Mo-haltigen Nickellegierungen wurden Korrosionsversuche über das gesamte Temperatur-Konzentrations-gebiet bis zu den atmosphärischen Siedepunkten durchgeführt. Die Resultate wurden in Form won Korrosionsdiagrammen dargestellt, wobei die Beständigkeitsgebiete durch Isokorrosionslinien abgegrenzt wurden. Die Cr-Ni-Mo-Cu-Stähleverhalten sich korrosionschemisch in Lösungen über 50% sehr ähnlich und sind in diesem Gebiet nur sehr beschränkt verwendbar. Dagegen sind sie bei niedrigeren Konzentrationen bis zu höheren Temperaturen technisch gut verwendbar, wobei sich die Grenzen der Verwendbarkeit im wesentlich nach dem Nickelgehalt richten.Die hochlegierten Nickellegierungen weisen im allgemeinen eine erhöhte Schwefelsäurebeständigkeit auf, wobei für die Ni-Mo-Legierung 70/30 (Euzonit 70) im Gegensatz zu allen anderen untersuchten Werkstoffen gerade in dem Konzentrationsgebiet um 80% die beste Korrosionsbeständigkeit bis zur relativ hohen Temperaturen gefunden wurde. Diese Erscheinung wird mit dem geringen Eisengehalt der Legierung erklärt, die Gegenwart von Chrom hat in den Legierungen offenbar eine ähnliche Wirkung wie der Eisengehalt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Overvoltage Effects on Bimetallic ElectrodesAfter a determination of the hydrogen overvoltages, on mercury, zinc, lead, cadmium, nickel and platinised platinium in acetate buffer solutions the hydrogen overvoltages of bimetallic electrodes as zinc - copper, lead - copper and lead - platinised platinium were investigated under varying surface conditions. For the first and the second systems mentioned the overvoltages are different from those of the pure metals while lead almost assumes the potential of the platinised platinium.The alteration of overvoltages on bimetallic electrodes can be discerned quantitatively from the inhomogeneous current intensity distribution whereby it becomes evident that the metal of the lower overvoltage attracts more current density lines. Differences in potential between the centre and the boundary of the electrode metals as well as temporal effects might disturb the simple current intensity distribution expected.
    Notes: Die Wasserstoff-Überspannungen an Quecksilber, Zink, Blei, Cadmium, Nickel und platiniertem Platin in Acetat-Pufferlösungen wurden bestimmt. Dann wurden die Überspannungen des Wasserstoffs an bimetallischen Elektroden: Zink-Kupfer, Blei-Kupfer und Blei-platiniertes Platin mit verschiedenen Oberflächenverhältnissen untersucht. In den beiden erstgenannten Systemen sind die Überspannungen verschieden von denen der reinen Metalle, während das Blei fast das Potential des Platins annimmt.Die Änderungen der Überspannung in bimetallischen Elektroden lassen sich quantitativ durch die ungleichmäßige Stromstärkeverteilung erklären, wobei sich zeigt, daß das Metall mit der kleineren Überspannung mehr Stromlinien auf sich zieht. Potentialdifferenzen zwischen Zentrum und Begrenzung der Elektrodenmetalle sowie Zeiterscheinungen in der Potentialausbildung können die einfache, zu erwartende Stromstärkeverteilung stören.

    Description / Table of Contents: Molybdenum in Chemical Resistant Steels and AlloysThough molybdenum is keeping only the 37 th place in the frequency list of the elements it is one of the most favourable alloying elements of steel. 90 per cent of the world production of molybdenum are consumed in steel mills. Among others molybdenum is used as alloying constituent for not rusting and acid resisting steels and alloys. Extensive improvement of the chemical resistancy of martensic and ferritic stainless steels could be achieved. Austenitic chrome nickel steels are taking special advantage as molybdenum induces an increase of their resistancy against pitting because of the passivating effectivity of molybdenum. Pure iron nickel alloys could be improved also by molybdenum. This effect can be increased by simultanous addition of copper. The simultanous alloying of molybdenum and copper causes striking improvement of the resistancy of chrome.
    Notes: Obwohl Molybdän in der Häufigkeitsliste der Elemente erst an 37. Stelle Steht, ist es eines der beliebtesten Legierungs-elemente des Stahles. 90% der Welt-produktion gehen in die Stahlfabrikation. Es wird unter anderem als Legierungsbestandteil von rost- und säurebeständigen Stählen und Legierungen verwendet. Bei martensitischen und ferritischen rostfreien Stählen wird eine weitgehende Verbesserung der chemischen Beständigkeit erzielt, besonders aber tritt diese Verbesserung bei austenitischen Cr-Ni-Stählen in Erscheinung, wobei das Molybdän infolge seiner die Passivität verstärkenden Wirkung die Beständigkeit gegen Lochfraß wesentlich erhöht. Aber auch reine Eisen-Nickel-Legierungen werden durch Molybdän verbessert, doch tritt diese Verbesserung besonders dann in Erscheinung, wenn gleichzeitig Kupfer zulegiert wird. Die gleichzeitige Zulegierung von Molybdän und Kupfer bringt auch bei austenitischen Chrom-Nickel-Stählen eine auffallende Verbesserung gegenüber Schwefelsäure hervor. Amerikanische Legierungen von Nickel und Molybdän mit wenig Eisen sowie solche von Nickel-Chrom-Molybdän und wenig Eisen, zeigen besonders günstige Korrosionseigenschaften. Eine Sinterlegierung von Molybdän mit Silicium zeichnet sich durch hohe Temperaturbeständigkeit aus. Schließlich wird noch die Beständigkeit von Reinmolybdän zahlenmäßig angegeben.

    Description / Table of Contents: The problems of the protection against corrosion and the materials in modern acid engineeringThe article contains a description of the problems and the industrialisation of modern acid engineering. Acid engineering is engaged in the protection against corrosion and acids and the construction of acid proof installations and buildings. A classification of the characteristic methods of concrete and steel working presents an introductory survey. Numerous materials as well as raw  -  and auxiliary  -  materials and their important physical datas are tabulated. The importance of protective covers is pointed out. Special attention is called to sources of error. Two new auxiliary materials Corroplast N and H are gaining increasing application in modern acid engineering.Some acid proof coverings which were constructed according to latest results of research are described. This is followed by a survey of the current types of cement and putty and some examples of the author's development and research work in acid engineering.
    Notes: Es wird auf die Aufgaben und auf die Industrialisierung des modernen Säurebaues hingewiesen. Der Säurebau befaßt sich mit Säure- und Korrosionsschutz-Problemen sowie mit der Planung und Erstellung säurefester Anlagen und Industriebauten. Eine Zusammenstellung der charakteristischsten Arbeitsmethoden gibt einleitend eine Übersicht, getrennt für Beton und Metall. Es werden zahlreiche Roh-, Hilfs- und Werkstoffe aufgezählt und ihre wesentlichsten physikalischen Konstanten tabellarisch zusammengestellt. Dabei wird auf die Bedeutung der Schutzschicht hingewiesen und auf Fehlerquellen aufmerksam gemacht. Zwei neue Hilfsstoffe, Korroplast N und H, finden im modernen Säurebau in steigendem Maße Verwendung. Einige säurefeste Auskleidungen nach neuesten Erkenntnissen werden beschrieben und eine Übersicht über die gängigsten Kitt-Typen gegeben. Im Zusammenhang mit den zwangsläufig erforderlichen eigenen Entwicklungsarbeiten im Rahmen des Säurebaues werden einige Beispiele angeführt. Auch an den industriellen Abwasser- und Abluft-Problemen ist die Säurebau-Industrie maßgeblich beteiligt, und sie werden in ihren wesentlichsten Grundzügen skizziert.     Description / Table of Contents: The Oxidation of TitanumIt was attempted to explain the time equations which have been found by different authors. There is a significant connection between the time equations of the different ranges of temperature and times of oxidation. Below 300° C where oxidation follows a logarithmic time equation no solubility of oxygen in titanium during the oxidation could be observed. Above this temperature absorption of oxygen becomes noticeable. In this range of temperature a transition from the logarithmic over a cubic to a parabolic time equation is observed. Above 700° C after longer times of oxidation cracking of the tinder coat must be expected.
    Notes: Es wird der Versuch unternommen, die von den einzelnen Autoren gefundenen Zeitgesetze zu deuten. Die in den verschiedenen Temperaturbereichen und Oxydationszeiten beobachteten Zeitgesetze stehen in einem sinnvollen Zusammenhang. Unterhalb 300° C, wo das logarithmische Zeitgesetz der Oxydation herrscht, ist eine nennenswerte Sauerstofflöslichkeit im Titan während der Oxydation nicht zu beobachten. Erst oberhalb dieser Temperatur wird die Sauerstoffaufnahme durch Titan beachtlich. In diesem Temperaturbereich wird ein Übergang zunächst in das kubische und anschließend in das parabolische Zeitgesetz gefunden. Oberhalb 700° C ist ferner nach längeren Oxydationszeiten mit einem Aufreißen der Zunderschicht zu rechnen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Phenomenon of the so called “Phenol Corrosion” of Telephone CablesThe lead coats of telephone cables are usually protected by bituminized paper strips and jute cloth. This measure does not provide any protection against corrosion. The cables corrode very easily, preponderantly by a certain type of corrosion. So one refered to the characteristics of the so called phenol corrosion. As it has not been possible to reproduce the phenol corrosion in laboratory it was assumed that the effect might be caused by the jute.The biological as well as the pure chemical decomposition have been researched. We found a number of decomposition products of very aggressive properties. We might assume now that the phenols do not cause the so called phenol corrosion. IT is our opinion that the biological decomposition of the jute is producing that special type of corrosion.
    Notes: Der Bleimantel von Telephonkabeln wird durch bitumisierte Papierbänder und Jute geschützt. Diese Maßnahme bietet jedoch keinen Korrosionsschutz. Die Kabel korrodieren sehr leicht, wobei eine ganz spezielle Art vorliegt. Es wird daher auf die Erscheinungsformen der sog. „Phenolkorrosion“ hingewiesen. Da es bis jetzt nicht gelang, „Phenolkorrosion“ laboratoriumsmäßig nachzubilden, wurde vermutet, daß die Jute für diese Erscheinung verantwortlich sei.Neben dem rein chemischen Abbau wurde auch der biologische Abbau der Jute studiert. Dabei fanden wir eine Reihe, für das Blei gefährliche Abbaustoffe. Es darf heute angenommen werden, daß es nicht die Phenole sind, die die sog. „Phenolkorrosion“ verursachen. Der biologischen Zersetzung der Jute wird nach unserer Ansicht die Hauptverantwortung dieses typischen Korrosionbildes zuzuschreiben sein.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Influences of Lithiumoxide Vapor Treatments on the Rate of Oxidation of IronExperiments were carried out to decrease the concentration of lattice defects of FeO by inserting foreign ions of deviating valence. This should allow to expect a decrease of the rate of oxidation of iron at high temperatures. Li2O was evaporated on small sheet iron specimens in high vacuum. Then the specimens were oxidized in air of 1 atm.Under suitable experimental conditions a temporal decrease of the rate oxidation could be achieved at a certain Li2O-concentration and a temperature of 850°C. The effect disappears within some hours as the growing oxide layer causes necessarily a decreasing Li2O-concentration. The effective Li2O-concentration is estimated to amount 1,5 to 2,5 per cent by weight. Higher Li2O-concentrations are causing a higher rate of oxidation while lower ones are ineffective. Furthermore one has to take care that the Li2O is stored preponderantly in the FeO-phase of the three oxide phase tinder (FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3).At temperatures about 600°C no effect of the Li2O-evaporation on the rate of oxidation could be observed.
    Notes: Es werden Versuche beschrieben, durch Einbau von Fremdionen mit abweichender Wertigkeit die Konzentration der Gitterfehlstellen des FeO zu verringern und dadurch die Oxydationsgeschwindigkeit des Eisens bei höheren Temperaturen herabzusetzen. Hierzu wird im Hochvakuum auf kleine Eisenblechproben Li2O aufgedampft. Die Proben werden an-schließend in Luft von 1 at oxydiert.Unter geeigneten Versuchsbedingungen läßt sich bei bestimmter Li2O-Konzentration und 850°C eine zeitweise Erniedrigung der Oxydationsgeschwindigkeit erreichen. Die Wirkung geht jedoch nach wenigen Stunden verloren, da durch das Wachsen der Oxydschicht eine „Verdünnung“ des Li2O eintritt. Die „wirksame“ Li2O-Konzentration wird zu 1,5 bis 2,5 Gew-% abgeschätzt. Größere Li2O-Konzentrationen erhöhen die Oxydationsgeschwindigkeit, geringere sind wirkungslos. Weiterhin muß durch geeignete, „Vorbehandlung“ erreicht werden, daß das Li2O überwiegend in die FeO-Phase des aus drei Oxydphasen (FeO, Fe3O4, Fe2O3) bestehenden Zunders gelangt.Bei Temperaturen um 600°C konnte kein Einfluß der Li2O -Bedampfung auf die Oxydationsgeschwindigkeit beobachtet werden.

The establishment of separated professorial chairs or faculties for these territories is proposed and their subjects and order are put to discussion.
    Notes: Während die Ausbildung von Galvanotechnikern in Deutschland in Fachschulen ausreicht, ist der derzeitige Lehrplan an den Universitäten und Technischen Hochschulen zur Heranziehung von Wissenschaftlern und Technikern für Forschung und Entwicklung für das Werkstoff- und Korrosionsgebiet nicht geeignet. Es werden daher Vorschläge zur Schaffung eigener Lehrkanzeln oder Fakultäten für diese Gebiete vorgelegt und deren Lehrfächer und Aufbau zur Diskussion gestellt.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Development of Cylindrical Multilayered Hollow Bodies for High Internal Pressures and Their Special AdvantagesHollow steel bodies standing high internal pressures are required by different branches of industry for liquids, gases and vapors. The construction of hollow bodies to be used in the chemical industry must comply with extreme requirements concerning pressure, temperature, size, knowledge of the influences of aggressive chemical agents as well as an elastic operation of heating and cooling. The reviewed article surveys the development from the one part hollow bodies, produced e.g. in heavy forging machines, to the multiple part constructions especially the multilayered hollow bodies and their wrapping bodies which have gained an enormous importance. The problems of their stability and safety are solved. Multilayered constructions offer simple protection against corrosion by use of different materials for the in- and outside coatings.
    Notes: Stahl-Hohlkörper zur Aufnahme hoher Innendrücke werden in verschiedenen Industriezweigen für Flüssigkeiten, und Dämpfe benötigt. Bei den Hohlkörpern der Chemie sind Spitzenanforderungen zu erfüllen in bezug auf die Höhe der Drücke und Temperaturen und Größe der Körper, Beherrschung der Einwirkung von angreifenden chemischen Agenzien, sowie elastische Handhabung von Heizung und Kühlung. Der vorliegende Aufsatz schildert den Entwicklungsgang von einteiligen Hohlkörpern, die z. B. auf schweren Schmiedepressen hergestellt werden können, zur Mehrteilbauweise, insbesondere zu den aus mehreren Lagen geschichteten Hohlkörpern, wobei der Wickelkörper überragende Bedeutung gewann. Die Probleme der Festigkeit und Sicherheit werden vollkommen beherrscht; darüber hinaus bietet die Mehrschichtbauweise durch Wahl verschiedener Werkstoffe für Innenschicht und äußere Lagen eine einfache und wirtschaftliche Möglichkeit des Korrosionsschutzes.
