Notes: The purpose of this study was to see if heart rate (HR) slowing could be operantly conditioned. Ten experimental Ss and five yoked-control Ss were studied. Experimental Ss were positively reinforced for slowing their HR on a beat-by-beat basis, whereas yoked-control Ss were reinforced in a pattern based on the performance of paired experimental Ss. The data showed that: some Ss can be taught to slow their HR by means of an operant conditioning procedure; Ss appear to learn better when they do not infer correctly what the response is that they are controlling; the conditioned HR response is apparently not mediated by changes in breathing; and reinforcement, per se, is not adequate to lower HR.

Notes: A photoelectric triggering device has been developed with the aim of providing a minimum or maximum trigger on a blood pressure wave. The output from a strain gauge which measures blood pressure is displayed on an oscilloscope, and triggering is done by means of a miniature photocell mounted on a micrometric advance. A transistor circuit transforms the photocell pulse into a relay contact.

Notes: In order to investigate the effects on electroencephalographic (EEG) amplitude of cognitive processes, as distinct from direct effects of sensory stimulation and motor response, subjects were given three different tasks in which the stimuli were always similar sets of spoken numbers and the responses were always written numbers. In response to 61 regularly occurring, randomly ordered, single-digit numbers, seven Ss wrote, on successive trials, (1) the sum of every 4 consecutive numbers, (2) every fourth number, and (3) every “7” and “9” heard. Since the physical stimuli were the same and the movements of response were similar for the three tasks, intertask pattern differences in EEG alpha and beta amplitude would presumably be due to differences in the cognitive processes required in the tasks. No differences due to cognitive factors were found. All short-term variations in both alpha and beta appeared related to widespread effects of response and preparation for response. Preresponse effects seemed related to motor set which was distinguished from attentional factors. The results suggest the necessity for a greater emphasis on motor effects in EEG studies.

Notes: A common method for evaluating the effect of a treatment is by analysis of variance with one of the classifications being treatment contrasted with control. Even when the treatment is successful on many Ss there are usually some Ss for whom the treatment is a failure or at least not very effective. This paper is concerned with a multivariate method for predicting treatment success and failure. The experiment at hand concerns electroencephalograms of patients treated with psychotropic drugs. From the experiment at hand it is possible to conclude that the response of mental patients to a comhination of chlorpromazine and procyclidine and to imipramine is detectable in their electroencephalograms, and also that the response to chlorpromazine in combination with procyclidine is quite likely to he predictable from their pretreatment electroencephalograms. Pronounced systematic differences in electroencephalograms were also found hetween the sexes.

Notes: Four groups, two comprising three neonatal rhesus monkeys and two comprising two juvenile rhesus monkeys, were selectively deprived of either low-voltage, fast-wave sleep (LVF) or of high-voltage, slow-wave sleep (HVS), respectively. Both infant and juvenile Ss displayed an over-all increase in threshold to the tone-shock combination during the deprivation of either phase of sleep. However, the thresholds of the infant Ss were greater, throughout deprivation, than the thresholds of the juvenile Ss.The juvenile Ss exposed to LVF deprivation were unique in exhibiting a sharp increase in frequency of forced awakenings from LVF, to values significantly greater than for the other groups, and in displaying compensatory recovery effects, manifested by increases in proportion of total sleep time spent in LVF, following termination of deprivation.Behavioral disturbances accompanying deprivation were not evident in any of the experimental groups. The study revealed a number of methodological problems related to the definition and to the selective deprivation of a particular state of sleep.

Notes: This study attempted to answer two questions: (1) Can electroencephalogram (EEG) amplitude changes be related to specific moment-to-moment changes in task performance? (2) To what extent are EEG changes related to changes in other indices of activation?Physiological responses were recorded from 20 subjects during 12 alternately fast and slow trials of a paced auditory serial addition task and three writing trials involving similar responses. Trial-by-trial results showed that EEG amplitude usually tended to covary with other physiological functions in a manner expected from activation theory. All physiological levels decreased during the session but became increasingly sensitive to differences in task difficulty. Within trials there was some concordance between alpha amplitude levels and other physiological levels, but exceptions to this trend and further analysis of palmar conductance patterns suggested that consideration of differential sensitivities of the individual measures to behavioral events might be more profitable than an activation theory approach. The only relation between EEG changes and specific behavioral events was the tendency for alpha and beta to block during motor responses.

Notes: The following five experiments are reported.〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1After palmar sweating is abolished by atropine, the skin is easier to drill with a dental burr. This suggests that arousal sweating protects the skin against mechanical injury.2Intracutaneous injection of acetylcholine or mecholyl at the forearm will produce skin potential (SP) effects of both negative and positive polarity and also a reduction in skin resistance (SR). This suggests that a cholinergic substance is involved in the production of SP and SR.3Intracutaneous injection of mecholyl at the forearm will either lower or raise the pain threshold to a needle prick. A lowering of the pain threshold was associated with the presence of an SP negative effect and a rise was associated with an SP positive effect. It is concluded that the adaptive value of the cholinergic substance related to SP and SR is to modulate cutaneous sensitivity.4The pain threshold to an electric shock can be lowered or raised by mecholyl injection. This may show that the pain threshold can be varied by mecholyl injection independently of its effects on sweating.5Lowering of the electric shock pain threshold at the palm is associated with the appearance of both SP negative and positive responses. This further demonstrates a relation between SP activity and pain sensitivity but indicates that the direction of the change in the pain threshold is not dependent on SP response polarity.

Notes: Arguments are presented in answer to Surwillo's criticism of a statistical procedure used by Stennett (1957) to test the hypothesis of an inverted-U relationship between alpha amplitude and palmar conductance. Surwillo (1965), despite unwise methodology, produced data consistent with the hypothesis that alpha amplitude bears an inverted-U relationship to heart rate.In a recent paper, Surwillo claimed that Stennett (1957), in demonstrating an inverted-U relationship between alpha amplitude and palmar conductance, “misused X2 by violating the requirement that entries from which x2 values are computed must be independent,” and suggested further that Stennett's “positive finding is really an artifact of the method” (Surwillo, 1965, p. 250). In attempting to support this assertion, Surwillo states that “The method is clearly invalid, because data … were combined according to a rule which assumes that an inverted-U function relates the variables” (Surwillo, 1965, p. 251). He then refers to hypothetical data which are obviously arranged to “prove” his point (Surwillo, 1965, Fig. 2).The purposes of this paper are: (1) to clarify the rationale of the statistical technique involved; (2) to illustrate the fallacy of the conclusions to which Surwillo is drawn by his hypothetical data; and (3) to point out certain methodological problems and pitfalls involved in studies along “the arousal continuiun.”

Notes: Conditional heart rate responses were measured for field-dependent and field-independent subjects. The conditional stimulus (CS) was a colored light and the unconditional stimulus (US) was an electric shock delivered to the finger. The CS-US interval was 10 sec. The field-independent subjects demonstrated an initial cardiac acceleration followed by a cardiac deceleration, whereas the field-dependent subjects showed only the cardiac deceleration. When these data are compared with the previously reported galvanic skin response (GSR) data, a model of sympathetic-parasympathetic reactivity is evolved wherein the field-independent group shows both conditioned sympathetic and parasympathetic autonomic activity, while the field-dependent group shows only parasympathetic activity.

Notes: With a test involving image and after-image relation, it is demonstrated that epinephrine differentially affects reactivity to green (530 mμ) and red (625mμ) stimuli and that most of the response is accounted for by altered response to the green stimulus. Norepinephrine effect was in the same direction but not statistically significant and might be accounted for by endogenous epinephrine secretion.

Notes: Heart rate responses evoked by a 3-sec auditory stimulus were averaged within stages of sleep for five subjects. Although there were some individual differences, the evoked HR response is generally diphasic, with the peak of the acceleratory component occurring on the fourth post-stimulus beat and the trough of the deceleratory component occurring on the 10th post-stimulus beat. Unlike other variables, which are depressed during the rapid eye movement (REM) stage, the HR response tends to be larger during the REM stage than during other stages of sleep. The size of the response is not appreciably affected by time of night, since HR is non-habituating during sleep, but is affected by the respiratory cycle phase, being largest when the stimulus occurs during inspiration or the period immediately prior to inspiration, and smallest when the stimulus occurs during the expiratory phase.

Notes: When the CS-US interval is longer than the latency of an autonomic response, multiple responses are obtained both during and after the CS-US interval on acquisition test or extinction trials. Certain terminologic, methodologic and conceptual problems concerning this multiple response phenomenon are outlined. A nontheoretical and, we hope, unambiguous terminology is presented. Methodologic problems concerning multiple-response measurement, between- and within- subject designs, trace and delay paradigms, intramodal and intermodal paradigms, and incompleteness of data presentation are discussed. It is felt that empirical analysis of the multiple response phenomenon will have important ramifications for our understanding of autonomic behavior in the classical conditioning situation.

Notes: The association between α-blocking and improved reaction times (RTs) has not been consistently demonstrated in past studies. The possible importance of the preparatory interval (PI) in this relationship has not been totally assessed, and it was felt that further exploration of this variable would help to explain the discrepancies. RTs were measured in two experiments, each using different types of stimuli and different PI durations. In the first, 4 PIs, 0.5-, 3.0-, 6.0-, and 15.0-sec, were used in a regular and irregular series. The warning signal was a 400-cps tone; the stimulus, a 1000-cps tone. In the second. PIs were 0.50-, 0.75-, 1.00-, and 1.50-sec; the stimulus was a single flash from a photo stimulator. EEGs were recorded simultaneously from the parieto-occipital region. Both peak-to-peak amplitude measures and subjective ratings of α-activity were made prior to the onset of the warning signal and the stimulus. The results did not support earlier findings of a relationship between α-blocking and RT. However, RT and α-blocking were each (independently) a function of the PI.

Notes: This study demonstrates the distortions introduced into the electro-oculographic record as a function of choice of recorder time constant. Controlled waking eye movements were simultaneously recorded on five separate channels from the same pair of nonpolarizable Ag/AgCl electrodes. Time constants for these channels were DC, 3 sec, 1 sec, 0.3 sec, and 0.1 sec. Results indicate that eye movement recorded through short time constants cannot differentiate between rapid eye movement and saccadic components of slow eye movements, cannot follow slow smooth eye movements, and cannot show the position of the eyes when they are not in motion. The use of DC coupling makes it possible to record these three classes of events faithfully.

Notes: An avoidance conditioning technique was employed to obtain external control over heart rate. A contingency was set up between heart-rate maintenance and punishment avoidance. During periods of time signified by a visual stimulus, punishments were dispensed when the total number of beats per minute decreased from the previous minute's total.Subjects (Ss) performed an instrument-panel-monitoring task without awareness of the biological avoidance contingency, but they were correctly informed that shocks were available only when the visual stimulus was present. After punishments had been dispensed on the basis of the contingency for several periods, punishment was discontinued and the visual stimulus was used alone as a conditioned aversive stimulus, in order to shape predetermined response patterns. Results included: clear evidence of heart-rate control over all Ss after training periods; maintenance of heart-rate control over continuous 40-min periods through continuous presentation of the visual stimulus; and shaping and replication of three prespecified response patterns. These findings demonstrate that punishment avoidance contingencies can be used to impose effective control over cardiovascular functioning.

Notes: The present investigators were partly concerned with possible uses of electro-oculography for studying the cognitive process in decision-making situations involving nonneutral visual stimuli. S was faced with receiving an electric shock if on critical trials he correctly reported (manually) the identity of the visual stimulus, or with escaping shock by incorrect reporting. Electrooculogram responses were ascertained to identify eye movements. The first study employed slit geometric figures as critical stimuli and nonslit figures as noncritical stimuli. The second study differed only in using blanks as critical and nonblanks (figures) as noncritical stimuli. The 80 males in the first study showed longer ocular latency, then greater ocular avoidance (narrower excursions) but longer stimulus viewing, then longer poststimulus viewing on critical compared to noncritical trials. The 25 males in the second study showed relatively greater ocular latency, then greater ocular avoidance and briefer stimulus viewing, then briefer poststimulus viewing on critical trials. Discrepancies between the two studies were discussed. The results clearly indicate the applicability of electrooculography for identifying phases of cognitive process.

Notes: A cardiotachograph (ECTG) for recording short term changes in heart rate of rats after electric brain stimulation is described. This instrument provides instantaneous graphical display of the electrocardiotachogram, showing the ratio of increase or decrease in heart rate regardless of the basal rate. The output voltage is proportional to the logarithm of the frequency of the electrocardiographic (EKG) signal. Stimulation artifacts are minimized by means of a filter network.

Notes: This study investigated the effects of verbalization instructions and amount of visual attention on direction of change of heart rate (HR) and skin conductance (SC). Little evidence for directional fractionation of SC and HR was found with the conditions used. The variable of verbalization instructions produced a highly significant effect on HR and SC, and conditions of no-verbalization produced a consistent but non-significant decrement in HR. Other degrees of verbalization produced increments in HR.A visual attention variable produced no significant effect on either HR or SC, although means were arranged in order of increasing activation with increase in visual attention (stimulus complexity). Results were interpreted as being opposed to an intake-rejection hypothesis such as has been proposed by Lacey to account for directional fractionation of response and for HR decrements. Instead, the authors suggest that the requirement to verbalize can produce important changes in degree and direction of autonomic activation.

Notes: Two psychiatric patient subgroups, defined on the basis of an extremely brief or an extremely prolonged electroencephalogram (EEG) response to cold pressor stimulation, also differ with regard to several aspects of autonomic response. The patients showing only a brief EEG desynchronization, with recovery during stimulation, also show a relatively brief autonomic response with recovery beginning during stimulation. They are specifically characterized by elevated levels of skin conductance throughout the measurement period. On the other hand, patients with prolonged EEG response show more prolonged autonomic response and are distinguished as a group by high heart rate levels. Clinical comparisons disclosed no diagnostic correlations. The rapid EEG and visceral recovery observed is discussed in terms of recently described neurophysiological mechanisms of homeostasis.

Notes: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that latency of REM onset is a negative function of drug-induced precentral fast (18 to 26 cps) activity in the EEG. Chlorpromazine increased this activity during sleep and wakefulness and decreased latency of REM sleep, whereas α-chloralose, pentothal, and phenobarbital were associated with a decrease of this activity during sleep, increased slow wave sleep, and increased latency of REM sleep. Phenobarbital and pentothal increased this fast activity during wakefulness and drowsiness, respectively. However, 18 to 26 cps precentral activity was reduced during sleep with α-chloralose and pentothal. A supporting study in cats demonstrates apparent synchrony of fast activity in the limbic system and cortex during wakefulness, and chlorpromazine increases fast activity in the limbic system. It is speculated that chlorpromazine enhances the effect of the limbic system on cortical (primarily precentral) activity. The sedatives are thought to potentiate the spontaneous slow wave sleep pattern.

Notes: Basal skin resistance (BSR) and galvanic skin responses (GSR) to five intensities of sound and light were recorded on four occasions in 32 student subjects (Ss). These occasions were assumed to include unfamiliarity and basal and real life stress conditions. All Ss completed the MMPI, California Personality Inventory, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Clyde Mood Scale and Examination Anxiety Scale. GSR amplitude was greater under conditions of unfamiliarity, alertness (by electroencephalographic criteria), and higher intensities of stimulation in both stimulus modalities. It was not greater during the presumed stress period. High ego strength-high Barrier score Ss showed a greater GSR amplitude than low ego strength-low Barrier Ss. Test indices of anxiety generally were not related to GSR amplitude, nor were other personality and mood variables.

Notes: In structured interviews, 26 adult males with spinal cord lesions at varying levels were asked to compare certain of their emotional feelings before and after injury. The investigator, himself a paraplegic, knew all subjects well. The major findings follow.〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1Significant decreases in experienced feelings of anger, sexual excitement, fear, and an over-all estimate of change were found.2A significant increase in feelings of sentimentality was reported.3Although spinal cord lesions decrease some emotional feelings, overt emotional behavior may continue to be displayed.4Support was offered for the belief that disruption of the autonomic nervous system and its afferent return causes notable changes in experienced emotional feelings. A trend was noted which suggests that the more extensive the disruption, the greater the decrease in some emotional feelings.

Notes: Statistical analysis of baseline nocturnal EEG profiles identified two groups of Ss (a restless and quiet set) who differed in their performance efficiency under acute sleep deprivation. The restless group with less slow-wave sleep, more body movements, more awakenings, more transitions from stage to stage, and longer sleep latencies showed greatest sleep-loss decrement. On the first night of recovery sleep, the sleep profiles of the two groups were virtually identical, but by the third recovery night, the restless group was again showing signs of disturbed sleep. Within each group, all Ss had highly systematic stage-of-sleep cycles, forming Markov chains of at least order one.

Notes: Averaged cortical evoked responses in man to repetitive informationally complex pictorial stimuli, as opposed to other visual stimulation, were obtained from scalp electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. The method used involved the projection of lantern slides. Included were three different categories (indifferent scenic, repulsive medical, and nude female photographs) assumed to evoke, respectively, neutral, negative, and positive reactions in the normal young male subjects. In all subjects, recordings from occipital or occipitoparietal scalp leads consistently resulted in evoked response patterns to pictorial slides measurably differing from responses to these same slides made non-associational through defocusing, or to blank light flashes. Responses to pictorial stimuli were also different than those to motivated observation of projected words, colors, or geometric patterns. The evoked responses to the three different categories of pictorial stimuli also showed significant differences. These differences were not as marked and were clearly replicable only for some subjects.

Notes: The purpose of the study was to test nine hypotheses derived from the theory of E. N. Sokolov. The hypotheses tested dealt with the habituation and return of the orienting response, and with the relationship between the orienting and adaptive responses. Three presentations of an auditory stimulus were interpolated among a series of 28 presentations of a cold stimulus administered to one group of 13 human subjects and among 28 presentations of a hot stimulus administered to another group of 13 subjects. Heart rate and amplitude and latency of vasomotor response to all stimuli were measured using a finger photoplethysmograph. When vasoconstrictive orienting responses to hot and to cold habituated out, vasoconstrictive adaptive responses to cold and vasodilatory adaptive responses to heat appeared. Eight of the nine hypotheses were confirmed, thereby providing strong support for Sokolov's theory, upon which the hypotheses were based.

Notes: Spontaneous electrodermal activity (EDA) (galvanic skin response [GSR] and skin potential response [SPR]) was recorded during daytime sleep and nighttime sleep. During all sleep, spontaneous EDA occurred most frequently during stages 3 and 4 (slow wave sleep) and least frequently during stage 1 (rapid eye movement [REM] and non-REM). This pattern was consistent over 3 nights of sleep. There was no relation between waking and sleeping spontaneous EDA. The spontaneous EDA during slow wave sleep significantly exceeded that during waking. During sleep, spontaneous SPRs often occurred without spontaneous GSRs.

Notes: Five human Ss were presented with a high frequency tone on the emission of each short inter-heartbeat interval and a low frequency tone on the emission of each long inter-heartbeat interval. Under these conditions, all Ss learned within a short period of time to produce significantly lower heart rates in the presence of one visual stimulus than in the presence of another. On the basis of this finding, it is suggested that an important determinant of where a given response falls on the voluntary/involuntary continuum is the availability of specific feedback from the response in question.

Notes: Relations between galvanic skin response (GSR) and other variables during learning of a shock-avoidance task were observed. Ss operated a four-position switch as cued by visual stimuli: one always shocked, one never shocked, and two associated with switch positions which avoided the shock. Forty-eight Ss formed successive subgroups which exhibited: (1) progressively better avoidance learning with increased awareness instruction and (2) significantly decreased GSR when the correct avoidance had been learned. Analyses were made to differentiate autonomic responding due to reinforcement (i.e. number of shocks received) from that due to expectancy (anticipation of avoidance).

Notes: Visual reaction times were recorded in a fixed foreperiod situation, to study the relation between sensorimotor performance and heart rate measures. With 42 male college students as Ss, both resting and performance levels of heart rate and heart rate fluctuations were obtained. Reaction time data were collected from blocks of trials at given foreperiods which ranged from 1 to 9 sec. Three groups of subjects, formed on the basis of high, medium, and low levels of peak-trough differences in heart rate during the reaction-time trials, showed different foreperiod functions. The hypothesis that fluctuations in heart rate are related to fixed foreperiod reaction time performance was supported.

Notes: This research sought to establish the existence of covert oral language behavior (as measured by chin muscle action potentials (MAP), tongue MAP, breathing amplitude, and whispered sound production) immediately prior to a psychotic's report of auditory hallucinations. The results indicate that two of these response measures (chin MAP and breathing amplitude) significantly increased just before the report of the hallucinations, and that the other two measures tended to increase at that time. Furthermore, slight whisperings were detected significantly often immediately before the hallucinations were reported. Control measures suggest that the response changes were localized in the speech mechanism and thus are not part of a general bodily arousal. It is concluded that, at least in one case, covert oral language behavior significantly often preceded the occurrence of auditory hallucinations. It is the task of future research to ascertain the nature and generality of the relationship between that behavior and the report of hallucinations.

Notes: An instrument has been designed which will print maximum, minimum, and mean heart rate (HR) data for 10-sec sample periods. The basic components are three detector circuits which sample and hold voltage levels proportional to the values measured, a digital voltmeter for “reading” these values, and a solenoid-operated adding machine to print out HR data in beats per minute. This apparatus greatly reduces the time required for transcribing cardiotachometer tracings into digital form for statistical analysis.

Notes: Individuals were classified as fast and non-vasodilators during a first hand-cooling experience. They were then required to carry out a prolonged detection task in 80°F and in 55°F air temperature.
