Description / Table of Contents: The Determination of Orientation of moulded Polystyrene by means of a special indentation hardness testThe orientation of molecules of injection moulded Polystyrene type PS 168 N (BASF) was qualitatively measured by means of a special hardness testing device. With increasing orientation there was a decrease of indentation normal of the orientation and vice versa. Moulded parts showed no orientation-dependant indentation after quenching.

Description / Table of Contents: Research into the Determination of the Ductility of Structural Elements in Plant Construction by Measurement on Model Vessels of Near Industrial Size -  Tests on Boiler Plate Vessels (Kesselblech H 1) at Temperatures Down to -80°CThe paper deals with a research program of the Dechema working group “Materials for Chemical Apparatus”, by which an attempt is made to correlate ductility as a characteristic materials property with ductility changes to be expected in structural elements and structures. On a low temperature test stand model containers are loaded internally until bursting and the deformations of a container bottom having a complex shape are measured. Deformation and bursting pressure vs. temperature support the preliminary conclusion that the embrittlement temperature for such structures is lower than the notch toughness transition temperature of the material. Corroboration of this finding requires further work with other materials and structures.

Description / Table of Contents: Mechanical Properties of binary AlloysThe stress-strain curves of blends of polypropylene and high and low density polyethylene and of polypropylene and an ethylene-vinylacetate copolymer are described. For the interpretation of these curves stress-strain measurements on model-blends and some results of the theorie of the stress-concentration are used. The model-blends were composed with high density polyethylene microtensile specimens wherein a cylindrical hole was filled with a second component. As with the extrusion blends the model-blends showed brittle or tough breaking depending on the kind of second component. We found that the elongation to break increased with decreasing E-modulus of the inclusion and with increasing adhesion between the two phases.

Description / Table of Contents: Research into the Determination of the ductility of structural Elements in plant construction by Measurements on model Vessels of near industrial Size  -  Theoretical studies and completion of the exploitation of test resultsThe deformation of pressure vessels with nozzles is investigated at various temperatures. For this purpose, the surface strains at the interesting spots, the increase of volume, and other quantities are measured in dependence on the internal pressure. The stresses are calculated  -  by means of the stress-strain relations for the elastic or plastic strain  -  from the surface strains and the yield strength, and they are shown in diagrams together with the effective strain. Setting the internal pressure and the radii of curvature in the membrane equation yields a linear dependence of the two average normal stresses on each other. By comparison to the calculated stresses it is possible to conclude to the bending moments in the wall. The results coincide with the experimentally observed origins of the cracks. Moreover at various temperatures the deformation of the pressure vessels is compared to the results of uniaxial tensile tests, and the expediency of other tests is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Distribution of Concentration in Binary Alloyed Cylindrical Metal Bars after Zone Melting with variable dength of Molten ZoneA one-dimensional model is described which permits determination of the distribution of concentration in binary alloyed cylindrical bars after zone melting, the zone varying in legth on moving through the bar. This model necessitates the following physical sinplifications:The concentration in the bar before zone melting is homogeneous; in the liquid, there is complete mixing, in the solid  -  before and behind the molten zone  -  there is no levelling of the concentration (i. e., the equilibrium distribution coefficient K is velid) the continuous movement of the molten zone must be separated into stepwise freezing of constant volumes and melting of various volumes (“slicemodel”).The theoretical distribution of concentration as determined by the “slice model” is given for some selected variations of the volume of the molten zone moving through the bar. It is shown that any desired distribution can be achieved by a corresponding variation of the volume of the molten zone during zone melting.

Description / Table of Contents: The evaluation of the dynamical properties of bituminous mixturesAn experimental method for the evaluation of the dynamical properties of bituminous mixtures is presented. Because of their viscoelastic behaviour the design of a special testing device was necessary. In this paper the guiding ideas for this testing machine are developed. Moreover, some experimental results and experiences, which could be valuable for calculating the stresses in road constructions, are given.

Description / Table of Contents: Elastomers. Physical properties concerning the difference to other plasticsThe definitions concerning the terms “Elastomer” and “Rubber” given by the ASTM-D 1418-67 and ASTM-D 1566-68 as well as by the corresponding Draft ISO Recommendation 1382 are contradictory one with another and moreover individually are unsufficient to fix limits of other polymeric materials. In this respect the DIN-Proposal 7724 (February 1969) can be regarded as an substantial progress, since it avoids complications arising from including raw materials and preliminary products and since  -  apart from the special chemical structure  -  it classifies polymers with the aid of their temperature function of shear modulus, and of the mechanical loss factor only. The habit of the curves obtained, the glass transition point and the modulus level within the rubber-elastic range leads to the classification into: Thermoplastics (Plastomers)  -  Elastomers  -  Thermoelastics and Duromers. Possibilities and limitations of this method are tested on 29 polymers (crosslinked and uncrosslinked) and by the results obtained the usefullness of this classification-system can be approved as positive in most cases.

Description / Table of Contents: Environmental stress cracking and stress-corrosion cracking in plasticsPlastics are being used to an increasing extent in fields which have hitherto been the reserve of other, usually metallic, materials. Owing to their good processability and chemical resistance, plastics engineering materials are for example employed for vessels, pipes, valves and fittings, blowers, pumps and gear wheels. In these applications they are not only exposed to liquid media but, are also subjected to occasional or continuous mechanical stress. The trouble is that there are media to which plastics in the stress-free state are absolutely immune, but that, when tensile stresses are present, cracking may occur; this phenomenon is called environmental stress cracking. It is therefore necessary for the design engineer both to know whether the medium to be handled causes environmental stress cracking, and to be familiar with the other properties of the material. The following article describes the most important methods of detecting environmental stress cracking and the most important media which cause this form of cracking in common plastics materials.

Description / Table of Contents: Tracking ResistanceThe Standard methods for the determination of the Tracking resistance are discussed and from 36 different insulating-materials the “KB” value is measured, with electrode distances of 1, 2, 3 and 4 mm. From the results a change in the V.D.E. Standard 0110 definitions for the measurement of cleakage and air distances of electrical working materials is proposed: The “KA” value should be substituted by the “KB” value and the “KB” value should be specified for the 1 mm and 4 mm electrode distances.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation of the extrudability of face-centered cubic metalsPart I represents investigations of the behaviour of the interface during the extrusion of lead and lead alloys. The alloying tendency (welding) and the coefficient of friction μ do not show any relationship to the power requirements during the process of extrusion. Due to the high pressure inside the extrusion presses an interfacial movement (friction) can take place only if the coefficient of friction is in the range of μ ≦ 0,001. By knowing the normal pressure and the shear strength of the material the coefficient of friction for slip-stick conditions can be determined from a chart. The dynamic friction is presented as the shearing off of the interfacial contact points and the stationary friction as the creep of these contact points. Attempts to calculate the power requirements of industrial presses on the basis of the shear strength of the material and shear area were successful.

Description / Table of Contents: Arc and plasma spraying of special materials with high oxygen affinityWithin the framework of the research work dealt with in this paper, metallic coatings of titanium, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum and zirconium were produced on steel base material by the spray-deposition process.  -  The affinity of the molten special metals to reactive gases (particularly oxygen) is high, therefore. The spraying operation was carried out in an inert gas chamber. The equipment used to produce these metallic coatings comprised a two-wire arc-gun designed by the authors and a commercially available plasma-gun adapted to suit the test conditions.  -  In the case of all the special metals sprayed in this way the principal mechanism effecting adhesion must be seen to reside in a metallurgical interaction between base und sprayed metal.  -  Observations are discussed concerning structural peculiarities and embrittlement effects depending on the kind of shielding gas employed.

Description / Table of Contents: Application of powder nitriding in relation to bath nitriding (Tenifer-process)Powder nitriding depends on thermal decomposition of lime nitrogen. This process is very simple, opposite to bath nitriding not requiring any expensive equipment. Only small specimens should be nitrided by this method. In relation to bath nitriding of 90 minutes powder nitriding should last nearly five hours. As after bath nitriding a zone of nitrides and a zone of diffusion formed on the surface of specimens. No pores were visible in the zone of nitrides of powder nitrided specimens.

Description / Table of Contents: Determination of wear in internal combustion engines for evaluating of motor oilsFor evaluating the wear performance of motor oils the objective determination of the actual extent of wear is especially difficult, for the process of wear is rather complex. This is above all applicable to cylinder wear, for often it is impossible to distinguish definitely between wear and deformation. Because the direction of maximum wear at several tests must not be maintained exactly and because it is difficult to find exactly the same point for measurement at comparison tests, there must as possible carried out circumferential measurements and generatrix measurements for the determination of maximum wear. For defining an allowable maximum wear in specifications there must stated some tolerances, otherwise in critical cases an unjustified classifying of several motor oils may not be excluded.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations with regard to the effect of Trichlormonofluormethan (refrigerant R 11) on modified polystyrenesDue to the results of simple investigations it is being tried to obtain quantitative statement concerning the damage of some modified types of polystyrene caused by R 11. Furthermore the effectiveness of various protective measures proposed against the aggressive influence will be given an expert opinion.Discussing the testing procedures critically it is found that in spite of the deviations of stress conditions of polystyrenes foamed with polyurethane, as they exist in practice, the resistance of the modified polystyrenes against R 11 is quite evident what especially in connection with economy can be of importance.

Description / Table of Contents: Enrichment of Trace-Elements prior to Atomic-Absorption-AnalysisDepending on sample type and quantity, different enrichments are carried out prior to the atomic absorption analysis for the detection of trace elements. These enrichment methods include the selective volume concentration by means of extraction and ion exchanger and co-precipitation for very low concentrations. For the trace analysis of micro-volumes special evaporation equipment instead of the conventional atomizing technique with the flame has proved its worth. The time required, precision and limits of detection of the most important methods are compared and explained by means of the experience obtained by the author.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation of the extrudability of face-centred cubic metalsPart II: During continuous extrusion at certain intervals dry oxides are discharged. This is explained with the aid of rheological investigations. If a shearing device according to DIN standard is used the results may show errors in a range of 70% and more. A new device is described which avoids this source of error. The shear strength of high purity aluminium was determined at various temperatures and rates of deformation. Investigations were conducted under similar conditions on the extrusion of aluminium and a relationship between shear strength and power requirement was established. On this basis the power requirement to extrude new alloys may be predicted by comparing the shear strength of this alloy with the shear strength of an alloy whose extrudability is known.Direct extrusion experiments under isothermal conditions were conducted in the reduction range R = 1.2-300. The linear relationship in double logarithmic scale exists only in the range of R = 4-40. Indirect extrusion experiments also showed a linear relationship below the reduction rate R = 4 in a logarithmic scale. It was found that during indirect extrusion a dead metal zone is also formed and this explains the divergence of the found pressure distribution from the theoretical values. The normal pressure of the container was measured at a number of points at various temperatures and reduction rates. In the range of 150°-170°C peculiar unsteadiness occured. Normal pressure on the change of the velocity of extrusion was investigated with the aid of a stepped-down die and a strong dependence was found. A device was developed to compare the plasticity of cubic face centered metals, and it was found that the maximum plasticity is reached at 90% of the melting point in degrees absolute.Efficiency investigations during extrusion showed that the power consumption required to overcome the radial shear in continuous extrusion is 60% to 77%, whereas the power required to overcome the total shear in extrusion in a piston driven press is 94% to 87%.Extrusions inside a calorimeter showed, on the basis of mechanothermodynamic conversion, that 85% to 94% of the power was used for the deformation of the metal.

Description / Table of Contents: Automatic Evaluation of Polefigure for TextureanalysisAn additional paper tape punch for a texture goniometer, including format control, makes possible an automatic evaluation of the raster of measurements by a computer, representing a polefigure. A modification of the raster, depending on the distribution of orientations, a method to find one's way in a labyrinth and a necessary reset of aboundant level points in the raster of measurements enable, as cyclically running algorithms, the correct finding of the isohypses and its reproduction on a computer controlled plotter.

Description / Table of Contents: The appearance of fracture of steel 100 Cr 6 as a function of the austenitization treatment is examined by means of electron microscopesIn a steel 100 Cr 6 was carried out the austenitization with temperatures between 860 °C and 1000 °C. The structure resulting from the heat treatment was examined in the light microscope, the area of fracture, in the electron microskope. The areas of fracture of several test pieces were etched for better visualization of the grain boundary. The area of fracture resulting from the grain size and the distribution of the separated particles is discussed. It is pointed out that the area of fracture is a function of the grain size as well as of the separated particles at the grain boundary.

Notes: Theoretical solutions for unsteady flow of a three constant Oldroyd fluid and a second order fluid under several different flow conditions of practical interest are obtained. The response of these fluids to suddenly applied external force is investigated in each case. Without using the stick-slip boundary condition at the wall, it is possible to show that pressure oscillation occurs with both fluids under a certain case.

Notes: Antioxidants such as bisphenol A (BPA) have long been recommended for retention of physical properties on oven-aging of PVC plasticized with certain plasticizers. We have shown how BPA inhibits oxidative fragmentation of plasticizers such as diisodecyl adipate (DIDA) and thus decreases apparent volatility, and how it improves retention of modulus, elongation, and low temperature flexibility. Low concentrations are more beneficial than either zero or high concentrations, especially on longer aging. At higher concentrations, although the plasticizer is retained in the PVC, it becomes less efficient at low temperature, and low-temperature flex is impaired while elongation is preserved. DIDA exudes during oven-aging unless oxidation occurs to prevent it. When BPA is present, exudation is worst at the most efficient concentrations of antioxidant. This appears to be the normal incompatibility of DIDA at 105°C which is permitted by the antioxidant. On oxidation, the dielectric constant of DIDA rises into the 4-8 range, signifying compatibility with PVC, and the DIDA does not exude.

Notes: Measurements of melt viscosity on samples of polytetrafluoroethylene of different molecular weight were carried out at 360°C by means of tensile creep tests in the linear viscoelasticity range. The apparent activation energy for viscous flow in the range between 330° and 380°C was estimated to be 20 kcal/mole. A value of about 7,500 was also determined for the average molecular weight between entanglement points (Me), from the equilibrium compliance (De). Melt viscosity data were compared with zero strength time (ZST) values and a linear correlation was found on a bilogarithmic scale. The dependence of ZST on the applied stress and temperature was also studied and the results are discussed on the basis of Bueche's theory on the creep at rupture above the glass transition temperature.

Notes: Optical microscopy has been used to illustrate various types of discontinuities, or flaws found within acrylic polymer fibers and to determine the distribution of such internal flaws along the length of the fiber. Flaws are comprised of particulate inclusions and voids. The internal flaw distributions approximate a Poisson type for point flaws, but significant variation is found in mean flaw concentrations from 0.03 to 2.3 flaws/mm. Both flaw concentration and flaw-free length distributions have been used to predict, for random selection of test lengths, the probability of avoiding a flaw with respect to gauge length (P versus Lg plots).

Notes: It has been shown that the resistance of certain polyethylene sulfides to thermal degradation can be markedly improved by the addition of small amounts of metal dithiocarbamates, thioureas, or diphenyl acetylene together with a suitable carbodiimide. The extent of degradation, as indicated by the concurrent changes in polymer melt viscosity in the temperature range 220°-250°C, was dramatically reduced, in particular, by a stabilizer comprised of 4% hexamethylenebis(tert-butyl)carbodiimide and 2% diphenylacetylene. At 250°C polyethylene sulfide (Dabco initiated) was stable in the melt viscometer for a period of 8-10 min and the resulting extrudate showed little sign of discoloration. The detailed mechanism of stabilizer action cannot be put forward at this stage because of uncertainty regarding the mode of polymer degradation which could occur by radical or ionic processes.

Notes: The effect of monomer and initiator feeds to each of a series of continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR) on the molecular weight distributions, average molecular weight, polymer production rate, and initiator and monomer conversions is studied for the termination-free polymerization system. For initiator feed concentrations less than 0.001 mole/liter, the distribution becomes narrower as the polymer progresses from reactor 1 to reactor 3. But for concentrations of initiator of 0.01 mole/liter, the distribution may be broadened from reactor 1 to reactor 3. The broadening of the distribution results in the production of a lower molecular weight polymer.

Notes: A systems approach is applied to the analysis of chromatogram resolution dispersion, or zone broadening, in gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Three possible sources of dispersion are considered; these are: the packed columns; the empty tubing between pump and columns, columns and detector, etc.; and the detection system, viz., the differential refractometer cell. It is shown that empty tubing can contribute significantly to the degree of dispersion and to skewness of elution curves and that this dispersion should depend on molecular weight of solute (polymer) and diameter and length of the tubing. The importance of dispersion in the empty tubing is compared with that in the packed columns and refractometer cell.

Notes: Experiments coupled with a systems analysis were conducted on chromatogram dispersion, or zone broadening, in gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Three components of a Waters Associates Model 200 chromatograph, each of which is a potential cause of dispersion, were considered; these are: the packed column, with extraparticle dispersion only; the empty tubing, between pump and columns, columns and detector, etc.; and the detection system, viz., the differential refractometer cell. Toluene solvent was used and the solutes whose dispersion was studied included orthodichlorobenzene (ODCB) and narrow-molecular-weight polystyrene standards having molecular weights of 900, 20,400, 51,000, 97,200, and 160,000. Nonporous glass beads, 50 μ in diameter, were used as column packing. Two diameters, 1 mm and 0.5 mm, of stainless steel tubing were studied. In addition to the usual rectangular pulse sample injection, a step input mode for solute introduction was also used. The empty tubing was found to contribute significantly to the degree of dispersion and to skewness of elution curves. Anomalous bimodal characteristics of the elution curves were also observed which could only be ascribed to the empty tubing. These phenomena depended markedly on parameters such as tube diameter and length, and solute concentration and molecular weight. Dispersion in the packed column, although important, was found to be symmetrical (Gaussian) and less sensitive to these parameters than in the empty tubing, especially with respect to molecular weight. Dispersion in the cell was believed to be insignificant relative to the packed column and empty tubing.

Notes: An analysis is given of the principal thermodynamic factors that influence the distribution of an ion between a macroscopically homogeneous polymer phase and a second homogeneous phase and a general method is proposed for the computation of the equilibrium ion sorptions in well-defined model systems. Particular attention is paid to the sorption of ions by polymers containing ionizable groups and the method is used to clarify some of the current problems in the theoretical explanation of the mechanism of sorption of acid dye anions by polyamide fibers. The method is applicable in principle to any dyeing system in which the fiber phase may be regarded at equilibrium as a macroscopically homogeneous, equipotential volume.

Notes: An infrared spectrophotometer was calibrated for the quantitative determination of butene-1 in copolymers with propene, and of butene-1 and limited concentrations of octene-1 in terpolymers with propene. 14C-tagged standards were used for the butene-1 calibration while standards for the octene-1 calibration were prepared from a homopolymer by blending. Films were pressed from the standards, and the absorbance per mil thickness was correlated with composition. For our instrument, wt-% C4 = 510 (A/mil) at 766 cm-1, and wt-% C8 = 539 (A/mil) at 725 cm-1. No special steps were required to eliminate the effects of crystallinity.

Notes: A solution-fractionation technique has been developed for water-soluble (molar substitution, MS, ca. 4) hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC), utilizing mixtures of anhydrous ethanol (solvent) and n-heptane (nonsolvent) of varying composition. Solubility is primarily an inverse function of chain length, species of highest molecular weight being soluble only in solvent mixtures richest in ethanol. Fractionation data indicate HPC substitution is fairly uniform, although there is a tendency for shorter chains to be more highly substituted than long ones. Some control over the degree of variation is possible by changes in processing conditions. Molecular weight and molecular weight distribution reflect the properties of the cellulose employed in sample preparation and the use or omission of deliberate degradation for viscosity control. A sample of HPC ([η] = 4.2; MS = 4.4) was separated into seven fractions of approximately equal weight and the average molecular weight (Mw), root mean square radius of gyration, and second virial coefficient of each of these fractions in ethanol were determined by light scattering, while molecular weight distributions were investigated by gel permeation chromatography in tetrahydrofuran. The relation between intrinsic viscosity and degree of polymerization (DP) was found to be [η] = 7.2×10-3DPw0.90. A comparison of hydrodynamic and configurational parameters for HPC in ethanol with those for hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) in water indicates these two polymers behave very similarly in solution. In both systems the ratio of the mean square end-to-end unperturbed molecular chain length (R02) to DP diminishes with increasing molecular weight, reaching a minimum at a DPw of approximately 3000. The ratio [(R02)/(Rf2)]z½, where (Rf2)½ is the root mean square end-to-end distance for 1,4′-polysaccharides assuming free rotation of the chain units, also diminishes with increasing molecular weight, reaching a limiting value of 3.5. This relatively high ratio indicates considerable rigidity in the coiled molecule and is believed to be at least partially the result of intramolecular hydrogen bonding.

Notes: The peel strength and tensile shear strength of polyester hot-melt adhesives on metals coated with epoxy resins are affected by four characteristics of the polyester: (1) inherent viscosity, (2) glass transition temperature (Tg), (3) degree of crystallinity, and (4) melting point. The inherent viscosity affects the strength, toughness, and crystallinity of the adhesive. The Tg and degree of crystallinity affect the low-temperature adhesive properties; the peel strength is relatively low when the Tg is appreciably above the use temperature. The Tg, degree of crystallinity, and melting point affect the high-temperature adhesive properties. A hot-melt adhesive with high peel and tensile shear strengths from 0° to 120°C is the polyester of 1,4-butanediol and trans-1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid.

Notes: Several sets of porous cellulose acetate membranes were made using the same casting solution composition and gelation conditions but varying the casting solution temperature and solvent evaporation conditions. The films were tested in reverse osmosis experiments at 250 psig using aqueous feed solutions containing 3500 ppm NaCl. The results show that the product rate obtained at a given level of solute separation is independent of evaporation time in the range tested and, for a given casting solution composition, the temperature of the casting solution and conditions of solvent evaporation during film formation together constitute an important interconnected variable governing the porous structure of the resulting membranes. These results offer a new approach to the problem of developing more productive reverse osmosis membranes and have led to a new class of porous cellulose acetate membranes capable of giving product rates 100% to 150% higher than those of the best membranes reported, at any given level of solute separation under the experimental conditions used. These results are of practical importance in low-pressure reverse osmosis applications.

Notes: The preparation of isotactic and syndiotactic 1,4-polypentadienes with a cis content of at least 70%-75% using i-Bu2AlH/Ti(i-OPr)4 and AlEtCl2/thiophene/Co(acetylacetonate)2 catalysts, respectively, is reported. Physical characterization of the vulcanizates, prepared by a common recipe, involving infrared analysis, DTA, simple stress-strain and swelling measurements, and dynamic mechanical measurements over a frequency range of 2 decades and temperature range of -60°C to +20°C indicated that no isomerization had taken place during vulcanization and that stereoregularity of the polymer chains affected the resultant cure: the isotactic form was found to have a greater crosslink density than the syndiotactic form. Master curves covering an extended frequency range were constructed from the reduced dynamic mechanical data and the calculated quantities - thermal expansion coefficients of free volume and the fractional free volumes at the glass transition temperatures - agree with the accepted values. Glass transition temperatures of the isotactic and syndiotactic polymers are -37°C and -42°C, respectively, and for their vulcanizates, -33°C and -40°C, respectively.

Notes: A new, graphic method of the resolution of a chromatogram into its component peaks is presented. From a mathematical description of the chromatogram of a monodispersed sample, a practical method of peak resolution of a multicomponent sample is derived. From this, the constituents may be characterized as to size and their weight fractions determined. As an example the final product in the synthesis of N,N-diglycidyl tribromoaniline is analyzed graphically and compared with results obtained using the du Pont 310 Curve Resolver. The agreement appears to be quite satisfactory.

Notes: NMR analysis of the chain ends of samples of poly(vinyl chloride) prepared using a Ti(OBu)4-alkylaluminum system in CCl4 reveals that the mechanism of the formation of free radicals depends on whether the alkylaluminum used is chlorinated or not. In the first case, some of the radicals are reactive in the initiation step of the polymerization, while in the latter case theses radicals first undergo transfer to CCl4, then the CCl3· formed initiates the polymerization of vinyl chloride. The poly(vinyl chloride) radicals are chiefly stopped by transfer to CCl4 (chlorine abstraction) or to alkylaluminum (hydrogen abstraction). In transfer reactions between growing radicals and alkylaluminum, the radicals formed have to react with CCl4 before reinitiating the polymerization of vinyl chloride.

Notes: The dependence of the rate of emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate on the concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate has been studied using the Mx+-N2H5OH system as initiator (where Mx+ is Cu2+, Fe3+, and Mn3+). It was found that the rate dependence on soap concentration was different for each initiator. The extent of this variation was: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Rp }\alpha {\rm }\left[ {{\rm Soap}} \right]^{0.18 - 0.55} $$\end{document} The variation is large enough to show that the dependence of the rate of emulsion polymerization on soap concentration is not simply a function of the solubility of the monomer in water, as had been suggested by Gershberg.

Notes: The carbonates and oxides of zinc and cadmium polymerize propylene sulfide to elastomeric materials, but with the addition of ammonia low molecular weight polymers are produced. The effect of the ammonia is to react with some of the propylene sulfide to give aminopropanethiol, which will itself polymerize monomer by a stepwise reaction or, after reaction with the metal carbonate, form a metal bis(aminopropanethiolate) which is an active initiator. Chemical and spectroscopic examination of these polymers shows them to be essentially bifunctional, with one NH2 and one SH terminal group. There is, however, evidence to suggest that further reaction of monomer occurs with the terminal amine groupings to give polyfunctional compounds. From the relative proportions of ammonia, zinc carbonate, and monomer, the rate of polymerization, molecular weight, and degree of endgroup coordination with catalyst residue can be controlled as desired. Due to the highly reactive endgroups, the polymers are readily crosslinked with epoxy resins, aziridinyl compounds, and hexamethoxymethylene melamine to give useful products exhibiting high solvent resistance.

Notes: The permeations of helium, hydrogen, methane, ethylene, nitrogen, and argon, and helium-methane, nitrogen-ethylene, oxygen-nitrogen, and sulfur dioxide-nitrogen mixtures have been studied using freeze-dried porous cellulose acetate reverse osmosis membranes. The results illustrate the existence of mobile and immobile sorbed layers and the governing influence of surface flow in gas-phase reverse osmosis separations. Preshrunk freeze-dried porous cellulose acetate membranes seem to offer a practical means of utilizing the reverse osmosis process for recovering helium from natural gas and separating sulfur dioxide from flue gases.

Notes: Gamma radiation-induced conductivity and permanent conductivity effects produced by high doses of 2 MeV electrons have been measured in two polyimidazopyrrolone polymers. Radiation-induced conductivity levels are small compared to those found in many common insulating polymers. Permanent increases in dark conductivity produced by accumulated doses of 5×109 rad at temperatures up to 300°C are not sufficient to inhibit ultraviolet-visible photoconductivity. High doses of 2 MeV electrons (5×109 rad) under the same temperature conditions produce no discernible effect on dielectric properties. Both radiation-induced conductivity and permanent dark conductivity increases were much smaller in one polymer (BTDA-DAB), suggesting the possibility of optimizing radiation resistance in this class of polymers by means of chemical structure variation. The radiolytic and thermal stability reported previously for this class of polymers has been generally confirmed, with particular reference to electrical properties.
