    Notes: Human blood (blood bank, expired) sheared through stainless steel capillary tubing (508 μm ID) is analyzed for plasma hemoglobin to study the effect of shear-induced blood damage within the low-stress regime (stress ≤ 20 Pa). Blood damage results are described in terms of capillary length (related to blood residence time) and wall shear rate for assessing bulk and surface effects. A phenomenological model is proposed to explain these experimental results, obtained over a shear rate range to 7,000 s-1.

    Notes: A model for surface shear in the contact line region of a steady state two-component evaporating thin film in the shape of a meniscus is developed. A constant vapor pressure boundary condition at the liquid-vapor interface is combined with experimental meniscus profile data to obtain temperature and composition profiles. The results are used to delineate the relative effects of meniscus shape, temperature, and composition on fluid flow toward the higher temperature in an evaporating meniscus. For the system analyzed, it is found that surface shear due to composition gradients and temperature gradients is the single most important contribution to flow in the evaporating, two-component capillary meniscus in the film thickness range 10-6 m ≤ δ ≤ 10-5 m. The effect of concentration on the vapor pressure leads to a maximum evaporation rate at a thickness of approximately 6 μm for the conditions studied. Theoretical results are discussed in the light of experimental observations.

    Notes: A two-phase approach to the control and operation of complex chemical processes at their optimum operating conditions is presented. The first phase consists of on-line parameter identification and state estimation of approximate nonlinear dynamic process models using on-line and off-line measurements. In the second phase, the optimum operating strategy is determined by integrating and optimizing this identified process model over a selected time horizon into the future. The method is particularly suited to those processes that exhibit slow dynamic responses and are subject to disturbances that have a significant economic impact. Examples include batch chemical reactors, large distillation towers, and processes with significant holdup times such as large fluidized-bed reactors.

    Notes: An experimental evaluation of methods to analyze process resilience based on internal model control (IMC) has been performed. A pilot plant consisting of two coupled distillation columns was instrumented for control studies using an LSI 11/23 microcomputer. Two alternative sets of inputs were chosen and the two full 7 (all outputs) × 4 (all inputs) transfer matrix models of the pilot plant were identified. From these models, a large number of potential 3 × 3 control structures were first screened for different levels of achievable control performance using the newly developed tools for resilience analysis. Without the need for simulation and with minimal computational effort these new techniques allow prediction of the effect of nonminimum phase characteristics, input constraints, and model uncertainty on achievable closed-loop performance. The resilience analysis results were found to be in agreement with qualitative physical intuition. To more fully investigate the usefulness and precision of the resilience analysis, three control structures for maintaining three product compositions from a distillation system were studied experimentally. The design and performance of IMC for this complex system is demonstrated and compared with single-loop PID controllers combined with a dynamic decoupler.

    Notes: Two distinctly different mechanisms that lead to growth rate dispersion have been observed experimentally. One of the mechanisms involves an initial growth rate distribution among nuclei, while the other allows crystal growth rates to fluctuate. The model formulated in the present work includes both phenomena. Solutions to population balances in a continuous mixed-suspension, mixed-product removal continuous crystallizer and a constant-supersaturation batch crystallizer are obtained in terms of parameters characterizing the two mechanisms.

    Notes: The dispersion of artificially produced softwood pulp flocs in controlled, plane, turbulent Couette flow was studied by using both monocular and stereoscopic film techniques. The mechanisms of controlled floc formation and of dispersion are proposed. For the latter, two mechanisms were observed, one global that involves deformation, breaking, and fragmentation, and one local that involves surfac erosion. The effect of the flow field stress level on the time and rate of dispersion is presented.

    Notes: A method is presented to estimate the diffusivities of electrolytes in concentrated multicomponent systems. The method is based on the Stefan-Maxwell flux equations. Explicit expressions have been developed for the phenomenological transport coefficients. These expressions incorporate the effects of solvation, viscosity, and ionic interactions. It has been shown that multicomponent diffusion behavior can be related to corresponding single-electrolyte and tracer diffusion cases. Thus, solvation effects are estimated from single-electrolyte data, and ion-ion interaction effects are obtained from tracer diffusion studies. The method has been tested for the ternary system NaCl-KCl, at concentrations of up to 3.0 M, and for corresponding single-electrolyte and tracer diffusion cases at concentrations of up to 4.0 M. In general, the method predicts phenomenological coefficient values within 1.5% of the experimental values for univalent systems.

    Notes: Single-stage separation of ternary gas mixtures of He, CO2, and N2 in a hollow-fiber permeator that simultaneously houses two different types of membranes, cellulose acetate and silicone rubber, was investigated. The two membranes have reverse selectivities with respect to He and CO2. Such a two-membrane permeator separates the feed into three streams, two permeates and one reject, each stream being enriched in a different component. The species permeabilities through each membrane were measured independently, and these values were utilized in a simulation that incorporates the fiber lumen pressure drops, the elastic deformation of the silicone capillaries, and the asymmetric structure of the CA membrane. Simulation results are compared with experimental data. Effects of flow pattern, relative permeation areas of the two membranes, permeate pressure ratios, feed composition, and membrane selectivities are studied. Advantages of the two-membrane scheme over the conventional permeators with only one kind of membrane are discussed.

    Notes: A theoretical framework useful for predicting the steady state response of enzyme-pH electrodes is developed. The model takes into account that the catalytic activity of the enzymes as well as the degree of dissociation of the product acids and bases is strongly dependent upon the local pH, and that buffering salts present in solution facilitate the transport of H+ ions. It is shown that the electrode should operate under substrate diffusion-limited conditions and the concentration of H+ ions should not have steep variations within the enzymic membrane. This condition can be fulfilled by adjusting the buffer concentration in the bulk solution. In the latter conditions the electrode response does not depend on the actual kinetics of the enzymic reaction, and can be predicted by an algebraic equation. The predictions are in excellent agreement with the experiments on penicillinase-pH and urease-pH electrodes.

    Notes: Forced Rayleigh scattering, a relatively recently developed optical technique, is used to measure tracer diffusion coefficients in polymer-solvent mixtures near the system glass transition temperature, Tg. The technique has a wider range of potential application than has yet been realized, and so is presented in some detail. The objectives were to obtain data necessary to scrutinize free volume theory, and to understand so-called anomalous, non-Fickian diffusion effects observed by others in polymer-solvent mixtures near Tg. Data on dye tracer diffusion coefficients in the systems polyvinyl acetate-toluene, polystyrene-toluene, and polystyrene-tri-m-tolyl phosphate were obtained over a polymer concentration range from infinite dilution to 96 wt. %. Small molecule diffusion coefficients are seen to vary by as much as nine orders of magnitude (10-14 to 10-5 cm2/s) over this concentration range. The data are in reasonable accord with expectations based on the Duda-Vrentas version of free-volume theory.

    Notes: The synthesis problem of separation sequences that separate several multicomponent feed streams into several desired multicomponent product streams is addressed. A superstructure is proposed for this separation problem that has embedded all the alternative separation configurations of interest. This superstructure, which has as separator units the separation tasks that are defined for each separation breakpoint, involves options for series and/or parallel sequences, as well as stream splitting, mixing, and bypassing. Formulating and solving this superstructure as a nonlinear programming problem that has as unknowns the stream interconnections, results in an optimal separation sequence. This sequence, which may involve fewer separator units than those included in the superstructure, is shown to be a realistic and practical one. The synthesis approach is illustrated with four example problems.

    Notes: This report examines gas separation by a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process that exploits differences in intraparticle rates of diffusion, rather than differences in adsorption isotherms. Film and intraparticle diffusion resistances are taken into account, but only the latter is examined closely. Each step of a four-step cycle is incorporated, and concentration profiles within the particles and along the column axis are predicted. Several critical PSA operating conditions, including step times, velocities, and pressures are studied in the context of separation of nitrogen from air with zeolite 4A.

    Notes: A model for the physical vapor deposition of compound semiconductor films that describes film growth from component molecular beams is presented. Constitutive relationships are used in the model to account for incomplete adsorption from the incident molecular beams, emission of adsorbed components into vacuum, and surface reactions of the elemental species. The model predicts film composition and growth rate as a function of incident fluxes and substrate temperature. It is applicable for important binary and ternary alloy semiconductors including the II-VI and III-V compounds over the range of deposition conditions yielding both stoichiometric and two-phase films. In this paper the model equations and the behavior predicted by the model are described for a number of material systems including (CdHg)Te, (CdZn)S, and CuInSe2.

    Notes: Asymmetric film-splitting of shear-thinning liquid between rotating cylinders in forward roll coating is analyzed with the Carreau model of shear-sensitive liquid. The mass and momentum conservation equations for steady, two-dimensional flow are solved by means of the Galerkin finite-element method. A simpler model is also developed from the lubrication approximation and its range of validity is established. The major results are that the greater the shear thinning, the farther out of the gap the splitting meniscus moves, the higher the flow rate through the gap, and the more symmetrical the film split than with Newtonian liquid. Experiments reported in the literature confirm some of these predicted trends.

    Notes: An experimental study of simultaneous flow and binary diffusion through four porous catalyst substrates was conducted in the range of pressure from 1 to 3 bar absolute. Experiments on the flow of pure gases and isobaric binary diffusion were carried out on the same catalyst substrates. The differential equations describing simultaneous flow and diffusion in the form of the Chapman-Enskog first-order approximations were solved analytically, taking into account the variation of viscosity with composition. The parameters for the diffusion and flow processes were found from separate experiments on flow and diffusion, from experiments on nonisobaric flow and diffusion, and from composition transients in fixed beds. There was good agreement between theory and experiment except for permeability experiments at low pressures, where significant differences were found.

    Notes: A fundamental theory based on the local momentum balances is proposed to explore the fluidizing phenomena of a centrifugal particle bed. Unlike the conventional vertical bed, a centrifugal bed is predicted to be fluidized layer by layer from the inner free surface outward, in a range of aeration rates. The span of this range increases with the depth of the particle bed. The pressure drop is predicted to exhibit a plateau, which agrees very well with the observations of many investigators, but disagrees with the investigations of Takahashi et al. and Fan et al., in which the pressure drop exhibited a maximum. Predictions of the critical fluidizing velocity and the corresponding pressure drop agree well with the data of Fan et al.

    Notes: Experimental data on the rate of dissociation of methane hydrates are presented. The data were obtained from hydrate mass loss measurements using an electrobalance. A resistance heater with a known heat flux was used in the dissociation experiments. A mathematical model describing the dissociation process is also presented. The model, based upon first principles, assumes that the water formed during dissociation is blown away by the methane gas produced so that the dissociation process may be regarded as a moving-boundary ablation problem. Agreement between the model and the data is within 10%.

    Notes: An analysis of parallelism for modular process flowsheet calculations is given. The central idea is to examine various algorithms that allow one to decouple and decentralize flowsheet calculations for computation in a multiprocessor environment. Specific algorithms are evaluated which make use of quasi-Newton updates to converge the flowsheet equations. From the analysis presented and example problems solved, it is clear that parallel processing can be used to enhance the computational speed of modular flowsheet calculations. In particular, various formulations of the simultaneous modular approach are analyzed to show how parallelism may be taken advantage of in flowsheet solutions.

    Notes: A new method to design adaptive, self-tuning controllers is presented that incorporates decoupling for multivariable control problems. The algorithm is shown to result from two very different derivations. The first approach employs multiple single-input/single-output self-tuning controllers but with a classical decoupling scheme incorporated; the second approach utilizes a novel selection of design parameters in an existing multivariable self-tuning control method. The decoupling self-tuning controller is capable of handling unknown or time-varying time delays. Simulation studies utilizing two distillation column models show that the controller can provide excellent control even for highly nonlinear and highly interacting processes.

    Notes: Generalized Taylor dispersion theory for nonreactive solutes (Brenner 1980a; 1982) undergoing convection and diffusion is extended to include irreversible first-order volumetric and surface chemical reactions possessing position-dependent reactivity coefficients at the microscale. For sufficiently long times the equivalent chemical kinetic description of the rate of solute depletion at the macroscale is shown to manifest itself as a single constant reactivity coefficient K̄* characterizing an apparent first-order irreversible volumetric reaction. Subtraction of this gross solute depletion rate from the original microscale transport equation permits the resulting Taylor dispersionlike problem to be resolved by a solution scheme closely paralleling that for the comparable nonreactive case. This allows a straightforward determination of the mean global solute velocity vector Ū* and dispersivity dyadic D̄* appearing in the macroscale convection-diffusion-reaction equation describing the local-space averaged mean transport process. By way of example, these three coefficients are explicitly calculated for reacting and diffusing solute particles sedimenting from a solvent flow occurring between two parallel plates onto the reactive surface of one of these plates.

    Notes: A model including the effects of diffusion and convection can be used to predict the etch rate of crystalline silicon in a plasma discharge of nitrogen trifluoride. The case of a radial flow reactor with crystalline silicon wafers located at discrete positions can be solved using a finite-element solution to a boundary value problem. Such a model is useful to predict the effects of pressure, flow rate of etchant gas, percent silicon exposed, and wafer position on both inter-and intrawafer etch rates. It was found from modeling that greater uniformity in etch rate is achieved by lowering the pressure and percent exposure of silicon, and to a lesser degree the volumetric flow rate.

    Notes: A high-temperature heat transfer probe capable of measuring both the total and radiative heat transfer coefficients between an immersed surface and the bed has been designed, fabricated, and tested. Measurements of these coefficients in beds of 559 and 751 μm sand particles at temperatures up to 1,175 K have been made using this probe. A thermal analysis of the probe is developed in order to ensure a reliable interpretation of the measured quantities. The dependence of the total and radiative heat transfer coefficients on such parameters as bed temperature, fluidizing air velocity, and mean bed particle size are investigated. The various models proposed to describe high-temperature heat transfer are evaluated from this perspective. The models capable of best simulating the heat transfer process with relative ease of computation are identified and evaluated using data generated in the study.

    Notes: A practical application of advanced, model-based, multivariable control to a pilot plant packed-bed reactor carrying out highly exothermic butane hydrogenolysis reactions is presented. The system is first stabilized by using butane flow rate to control the reactor hot-spot temperature. Propane production and butane conversion are then controlled using multivariable controllers that manipulate the hot-spot temperature set point and hydrogen flow rate. The controller designs are based on multivariable transfer function models developed using multivariable time series and process identification methods.Two types of multivariable controllers are applied. The first is an internal model controller (IMC) utilizing a stabilized approximation of the model inverse and a tunable exponential filter. The second is a linear-quadratic (LQ) controller design using pulse transfer function models to characterize the process dynamics and autoregressive-moving average models to characterize the disturbances. The optimal control solution was arrived at via a spectral factorization solution to the Wiener-Hopf equations. The results indicate that both designs, if well tuned, provide good performance and robustness over a wide range of operation.

    Notes: Transport in liquid-filled pores of molecular dimensions plays an important role in membrane separations, in various forms of chromatography, and in catalysis, to name a few examples. A frequent observation is that if the pore dimensions are of the same order as those of a solute molecule, the apparent diffusion coefficient of that solute is much lower than in bulk solution. Likewise, rates of convective transport of such solutes are generally lower than the product of bulk concentration and volume flow rate. Thus, solute transport is typically “hindered” or restricted. A key objective of research on hindered transport is to be able to predict the applicable transport coefficients from such fundamental information as the size, shape, and electrical charge of the solutes and pores. The present status of this research is reviewed.

    Notes: A novel plasma-developed resist lithographic process is described that uses compressed CO2 to extract nonvolatile siloxane molecules from host organic polymers. The process is capable of at least 0.75 μm resolution with an X-ray sensitive guest siloxane-host polymer system. A processing window was investigated and defined to eliminate or minimize film damage during compressed fluid extraction. Polymer deformation was usually avoided by using supercritical CO2 rather than liquid CO2, provided that film thicknesses were ≤1 μm. Increased solute concentrations in the host polymer also adversely affected the quality of extracted films. An in situ capacitance process monitoring scheme was developed which indicated that film damage, when observed, was primarily caused by explosive decompression of the solvent from the host polymer.

    Notes: A new model, called STICT for surface thermodynamics using ideal chemical theory, is developed for the surface tension of liquid metal alloys. It uses the Guggenheim approach to relate surface phase properties to those in the bulk. For strongly solvated metal mixtures, ideal chemical theory is used to characterize bulk properties. The STICT model fits experimental data well for the seven systems for which sufficient data exist. Moreover, calculations of bulk and surface true compositions give some guidance to the tailoring of the surface properties of alloys for various applications.

    Notes: A mathematical model is formulated for the general class of problems that involve the transport of stable particulate suspensions in porous media. The porous medium is represented by a network of pore bodies (sites) and pore throats (bonds). Population balances for the species responsible for particle retention and permeability reduction are written in terms of the various mechanisms of particle capture and reentrainment. Rates of capture and release are evaluated using appropriate physical models. We specifically concentrate on mass transfer limited processes. The effective-medium theory is suitably formulated to determine the fluid flow distribution in the network and to calculate the permeability. The network representation of the porous medium together with the population balances and the rates of deposition and release provide a consistent model that finds application in filtration and fines migration processes.

    Notes: A method for solving the problem of heat exchanger network synthesis in chemical process plants is presented based on the use of the out-of-kilter algorithm. The method represents an extension of previous approaches based on network flow problem formulations. A new approach to overcome the constraints in forbidden-match problems, termed the dual stream approach, has been developed based on the use of a stream as both a hot and a cold stream. This approach results in considerable savings in utility costs in certain forbidden-match problems. An algorithm to deal with heating or cooling utilities that undergo temperature changes, termed non-point-temperature utilities, is presented using the transshipment model. The new algorithm determines the utility mass flow rates and pinch points accurately.

    Notes: Boiling heat transfer from a porous layer sintered on a horizontal heater surface and heated from the base was analyzed for laminar to turbulent regions. The effects of the thickness of the porous layer, particle diameter, porosity, pore size distribution, and the properties of fluids on boiling heat transfer were analyzed. Reynolds number, parameter ψ, and a dimensionless heat flux were related to each other. Most experimental data used in this work fall in the region where the vapor Reynolds number is less than 100; very few data exceeded far beyond 1,000.For thick porous beds, the thickness no longer affects the heat transfer. For thin porous beds, heat transfer is affected by the thickness of the porous layer. The prediction equations of various investigators for dryout heat flux were put into dimensionless forms and the differences that exist among the equations are explained.

    Notes: Global bifurcations are frequently encountered in the dynamic behavior of chemically reacting systems and their models. They cause dramatic qualitative changes in the system response, such as the birth and death of oscillations and even the onset of chaos. They involve entire regions of the system phase space, and due to their nature they are in general not predictable by standard local bifurcation methods, analytical or numerical. Special methods and algorithms must therefore be developed to locate and analyze them in parameter space. This paper presents such methods and algorithms and illustrates them through standard chemical engineering examples. Test cases include lumped chemical reactor models (homogeneous and heterogeneous, autonomous and periodically forced), a problem of compressible gas flow in porous media, and a case of two coupled oscillators. The phenomena discussed include infinite-period bifurcations, saddle connections, frequency locking, and the creation and extinction of multifrequency responses through global manifold interactions (homoclinic tangles).

    Notes: Experiments were carried out on the electrodissolution of iron from a disk electrode rotating at 900 rpm in 1 M H2SO4. Current was measured as a function of applied potential. Potentiostatic current oscillations, all of which were chaotic, occurred over a range of applied potential. The characteristics of these chaotic oscillations were studied with the aid of state space plots and Poincaré sections, and with the calculation of ν, the correlation dimension; the latter quantity varied smoothly between 2.4 and 6.0 throughout the range of applied potential studied. The attractor for which ν = 2.4 can be represented by a three-dimensional state space plot.

    Notes: A modified sealed-tube apparatus has been developed for the measurement of the critical temperatures of thermally unstable fluids. The apparatus has been used to measure the critical temperatures of the normal alkanes from n-octane to n-hexadecane. Since the higher alkanes (with more than 10 carbon atoms) decompose at temperatures well below their critical temperatures, a new method of analysis of the apparent critical temperature vs. time data has been developed. This method employs reaction kinetics based on an irreversible first-order reaction and is used to linearize the data and to perform an unambiguous extrapolation to the critical temperature of the undecomposed substance. The method is successful because the temperature history of the substance is recorded by computer, and ampoule contents are analyzed at the completion of the experiment. The critical temperatures of the n-alkanes reported in this paper have been compared with values found in previous studies.

    Notes: The dissolution kinetics of alumina in aqueous solution was studied in batch and continuous systems. Data were correlated by the kinetic equation C(t) = 1 - exp(-ktα). The parameter k was a function of temperature and acid concentration, while the parameter α remained constant.The temperature variation of k was accurately represented by an Arrhenius-type equation with a temperature coefficient, 18,200 kJ/kmol. The data obtained in batch experiments were free of mass transport and mixing effects. Adsorption-desorption equilibrium of hydrogen ion at the alumina surface was observed. The results supported postulated reactions reported in the literature for alumina dissolution. The basic features of the mechanism include hydration of the aluminum oxide surface, hydrogen ion adsorption followed by reaction to form a positively charged surface species [Al(OH)2+], formation of stable surface species [AlOOH and (Al(OH)2)2 SO4], and desorption of products.

    Notes: Experimental values are presented for the wall and interfacial shear stresses in stratified gas-liquid flow in a pipe. The wall and Reynolds shear stresses were measured using a hot-film anemometry technique. The interfacial shear stress was determined using two methods: from a momentum balance, using the wall shear stresses and void fraction measurements, and from an extrapolation of the Reynolds shear profile at the gas-liquid interface. The predicted interfacial shear stress data were approximated by the formula relating the interfacial friction factor with the void fraction and gas and liquid Reynolds numbers, and were compared with other reported data.

    Notes: Liquid phase mass transfer in a ternary system [R - A] + (B + E) has been analyzed according to the Nernst-Planck equation. The equilibrium isotherm was represented by the mass action law. In the case of DA 〉 DB 〉 DE, the resin phase concentration of B ion with time showed a peak. The height of the peak was influenced by the diffusivity ratio, equilibrium constant, and ionic valence. When the modified equilibrium constant K′ ≧ 100 in the case of A ion and K′ ≧ 500 in the case of B and E ions, the exchange rates of the ions could be obtained by approximating K′ = ∞.Experimental data on the change of the resin phase concentration y with time are represented. In a [R - H+] + (Na+ + Zn2+) system, the change of yNa with time showed a high peak. In a [R - H+] + (Na+ + Li+) system, the change of yLi with time showed a small peak. No peaks arose in a [R - Na+] + (H+ + Li+) system. The data agreed reasonably well with the values calculated according to the theoretical equations.

    Notes: The intrinsic rate constant for the rate of reaction of SO2 with porous CaO in an excess of O2 to form CaSO4 has been determined from SO2 sorption data on a wide range of particle diameters (1 μm- 1mm), SO2 partial pressures (60 Pa to 5 kPa), and temperatures (973- 1,478 K). An intrinsic SO2 reaction order of unity has been validated through current fixed-bed experiments in the 60 to 300 Pa SO2 partial pressure range, while fluidized-bed data were used to validate the reaction order from 500 Pa to 5 kPa SO2 partial pressure. The absolute value of the rate constant and the activation energy was derived from data on small (1 μm) particles, which approach the limit of kinetic control. While analysis of this data base does minimize the role of intraparticle diffusion through the porous sorbent particle, the filling of the small pores by the product deposits and the associated loss of internal surface area is critical to the data reduction. It is believed that the intrinsic rate constant is known to the accuracy to which the reactivity and the BET surface area may be measured.

    Notes: Experiments on phenol biodegradation by a mixed culture in a draft-tube, three-phase fluidized-bed biofilm reactor (DTFBR) at the steady state were performed. The characteristics of biofilms developed in the DTFBR were identified. A steady state biofilm model was proposed that considers the simultaneous diffusion and reaction of oxygen and phenol within the biofilm and the external mass transfer resistance between the biofilm and the completely mixed bulk liquid phase. The proposed model assumes a double-substrate limiting mechanism for microbial growth kinetics, and Haldane and Monod type expressions were used to characterize the dependence of microbial specific growth rate on phenol and oxygen, respectively. The experimental results were used to test the validity of the proposed model.

    Notes: An efficient and rigorous strategy is presented for evaluating the first-order sensitivity of the optimal solution to changes in process parameters or process models. An algorithm that constructs a reduced Hessian in the null space of the equality constraints is used to solve the sensitivity equations; the resulting effort to solve these equations depends only on the space of the decision (independent) variables. Consequently, large computational savings can be realized because the solution procedure eliminates the need for obtaining second partial derivatives with respect to tear (dependent) variables explicitly. The method is applied to several flowsheeting examples in order to determine efficiently the sensitivity of the optimal solution to parametric and physical property model changes.
