Notes: The microbial biosensors were constructed from carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) modified with insoluble mediators and immobilized membrane vesicles or whole cells of the bacterium Paracoccus denitrificans. The best results were obtained with membrane vesicles and ferrocene (FC). This system could serve for determination of succinate, D-lactate, and L-lactate. Significant increase of signal was obtained when competitive flux of electrons to oxygen was blocked by inhibiting terminal oxidases using cyanide.

Notes: The reaction of 1,1′-ferrocenylene-bis(methylenepyridinium) tosylate chloride (1) with aza-x-crown-y (x/y = 12/4; 15/5; 18/6) gives the three novel ferrocene biscrown ethers 1,1′-ferrocenylene-bis(methylene-aza-x-crown-y) (x/y = 12/4, 2; 15/5, 3; 18/6, 4). The reaction of 1 with diaza-18-crown-6 represents a new and simple route to the known ferrocene cryptands 1,1′-zacyclooctadecane)] (5) and 1,1″:1′,1″-bisferrocenylene-bis-[bis-7,16-methylene(1,4,10,13-tetraoxa-7,16-diazacyclooctadecane)] (6). The solid-state structure of 5 is described. The ferrocene bridge compresses the diaza crown ether leading to an internitrogen distance of 458 pm. The stoichiometry of Na+ and K+ complexes with 2 and 3 in CD3CN determined in NMR titration experiments suggests the formation of Na+ and K+ crown ether sandwich complexes in solution. Cyclic voltammograms of 2 and 5 in the presence of varying amounts of H+ and Na+ have been recorded. The redox potential of ferrocene is shifted by +180 mV in the case of 5 · Na+ and up to +600 mV in the case of 5 · H+H+ relative to 5, but only by + 70 mV with 2 · Na+ and 2. The protonation of 5 give rises to several isomers (exo and endo protonation) which differ significantly in their redox potential. The extremely large positive shift of the oxidation potential of the diprotonated ferrocene cryptand corresponds to an increase in the acidity of 5 · H+H+ upon oxidation by more than ten orders of magnitude and makes this system a candidate for the directed membrane transport of protons.

Notes: This Review discusses the synthesis and characterization by our Group of new antibiotics belonging to the class of penicillins, cephalosporins and rifamycins with ferrocenyl and 1, 1′-ferrocenilene residues in the molecule. As reactants for 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) and 7-aminocephalosporanic acid (7-ACA) the following were used: 1, 1-bis(chlorocarbonyl)ferrocene, ferrocenyl sulfochloride, 1, 1′-ferrocenylenedisulfochloride and thioglycolic acids S-modified with ferrocene. In the synthesis of rifamycins, the hydrazides of the thioglycolic acids, S-modified with ferrocene, were employed as nucleophilic agents. The synthesized intermediates were characterized by elemental analysis, TLC, IR, UV and 1H NMR spectra. The characterization of new antibiotics was made by TLC, IR and UV spectral analysis.Biological activity was tested on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Good activity is reported towards Gram-positive bacteria in the case of derivatives containing residues of thioglycolic acid S-modified with ferrocene, the antibacterial activity being similar to that of amoxicillin, carbenicillin and cephalothin. All compounds are inactive towards Gram-negative bacteria.

Notes: 13C chemical shift powder patterns of ferrocene enclathrated in β- and γ-cyclodextrins were measured by one-dimensional switching-angle sample spinning NMR spectroscopy. The ferrocene molecules were found to precess with a precession angle of 69° in γ-cyclodextrin. In β-cyclodextrin the ferrocene molecules I-III, in different motional states, were enclathrated with populations of 0.42, 0.32 and 0.26, respectively; ferrocene I is tightly enclathrated and rotates around its fivefold axis, whereas ferrocenes II and III precess with precession angles of 30° and 42°, respectively.

Notes: π-Complexes of aromatic compounds with transition metals display aromatic characteristics. This is shown, among other things, by the fact that many such compounds undergo aromatic substiution reactions. A survey of substitutions and secondary reactions in such systems is given.
