Die Feuchtigkeitsaufnahme und Feuchtigkeitspermeation ist für viele Anwendungsgebiete der Kunststoffe wichtig, z. B. für die Elektroindustrie, bei der bestimmte Schaltungsteile mit einer Kunststoffschicht vor Wasser geschützt werden. Der bisher übliche Brauch, die Wasseraufnahme eines Materials mit einer Zahl, etwa nach der betreffenden Norm, zu kennzeichnen, gestattet es nicht, Aussagen über die Wasser-aufnahme zu machen, wenn die Verhältnisse von denen der Norm verschieden sind. Dazu ist eine nähere Kenntnis des ihr zugrunde liegenden physikalischen Vorganges unbedingt notwendig. Es stellt sich heraus, daß sich die Feuchtigkeitsaufnahme durch die klassische Diffusionstheorie in durchaus befriedigender Weise erfassen läßt. Ein einfacher mathematischer Eingriff ermöglicht es, die Variablen Form und Größe des Körpers, die Art des Mediums, die Lagerungszeit und -temperatur und die Material-konstanten zu trennen und also Voraussagen über die Wasseraufnahme eines Körpers von beliebiger Größe und Gestalt bei ebenfalls beliebiger Wahl der übrigen Bedingungen zu machen.
