Notes: A flash photomicrographic method and modified dye-light transmittance technique are employed to measure size distributions and mixing frequencies in a turbulently agitated flow vessel. This liquid-liquid dispersion is nearly spatially homogenous. Mixing frequencies are strongly dependent on impeller speed and moderately dependent on holdup fraction.

Notes: The composite algorithm derived in Part I is used to construct models from pulse responses of lumped and distributed systems, as well as an empirically measured residence time density. Along the way, salient points in the numerical implementation of the algorithm are indicated. In the present recursive procedure, the initial transient is predicted accurately by lower-order partial realizations; successive partial realizations involve progressively longer tails of the pulse response. The zeroth moment of the impulse response is used to advantage when realizations with no zeros are appropriate.

Notes: The concept of the optimal synthesis of dynamic process systems with uncertain parameters is introduced. A structure parameter approach is used to theoretically derive the necessary condition for the optimal performance system structure, and an effective algorithm for implementing the synthesis method is presented. The results are applied to the optimal synthesis of a reactor-separator system for the dynamic start-up of two reaction systems.

Notes: Random search procedures have recently been successfully applied to the optimization of a variety of chemical engineering problems, including optimization of chemical processes by flow sheet simulation. These procedures represent the independent variables as random variables described by probability distributions. The adaptive random search procedure centers the distribution for each variable about the best search point found and examines this region for a better point. Thus, this technique has the ability of continuously moving the search region toward the optimum, which is particularly advantageous in following constraints. This study examines the efficiency of the adaptive random search technique as applied to six different problems, which have been previously solved by various other techniques.

Notes: A method of moments has been formulated for the determination of the diffusivity of a gas in a polymer from a step response in a continuous permeation chamber. Contributions of system components other than the polymer are easily factored out to determine the contribution of the polymer alone, and this contribution is then analyzed to calculate the diffusivity. The method has been applied to the measurement of the diffusivities of sulfur dioxide in PTFE (Teflon) and fluorosilicone rubber tubes over a wide temperature range.

Notes: Shear viscosity of an Amioca starch paste undergoing hydrolysis by immobilized α-amylase is shown to follow a power law behavior. The power law constants are uniquely related in a way which reduces the power law to a dimensionless form, a result previously reported only for retrograding starch and coagulating milk. The concept of a total hydrodynamic volume [Amioca starch molecules (amylopectin) plus associated immobilized liquid] is extended to concentrations above the dilute solution regime. A molecular interpretation is proposed for the shear viscosity behavior of Amioca starch pastes vs. extent of starch hydrolysis.

Notes: Bench scale packed columns were used to study the kinetic behavior of biological denitrification. After tracer studies were run to determine flow characteristics, steady state nitrate profiles were determined. A first-order rate expression with an Arrhenius temperature dependence is an adequate model of the reaction for nitrate-nitrogen concentrations of 〈 100 mg/l and temperature of 5° to 20°C. The rate constants are proportional to the packing surface area.

Notes: Ultra high-speed motion picture photography is used to measure the decay and frequency of drops of liquid in air and of air cavities in liquids. Consequent to the belief that surface active agents induce dynamic interfacial properties, a very clean system is used, and experiments are performed with triple distilled water, tap water, and known aqueous solutions of ionic and nonionic surfactants. Experimental results yield good qualitative agreement with the theory. The theoretical and experimental studies show the system to be a new and promising technique for the quantitative evaluation of the various interfacial viscous and elastic properties.

Notes: Reaction rates of selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene (PA) and styrene were studied in a packed-bed reactor with concurrent gas and liquid upflow. The surface reaction rates were expressed by the reaction between adsorbed PA or styrene and dissociated hydrogen atoms competing for the same active sites. The contributions of mass transfer rate were determined, and better selectivity conditions were discussed.

Notes: The kinetics of sorption of four representative hydrocarbons in 13X zeolite crystals have been investigated at temperatures within the range 409 to 513°K and pressures 0.1 to 100 torr. Extensive diffusivity data are presented showing the dependence on sorbate concentration and temperature. The form of the concentration dependence of the diffusivity for these systems is very similar to that of the small monatomic and diatomic molecules in 5A zeolite. This similarity is understandable, since the key factor which determines the diffusion behavior is the relative size of diffusing molecule and sieve window. For these hydrocarbons in the 13X sieve, as for the monatomic and diatomic gases in 5A, the critical diameters of the diffusing molecules are all appreciably smaller than the free diameter of the windows.

Notes: Moment analysis of input-response data for three-phase slurry reactors is shown to be useful for detrmining mass trasnport rate coefficients. Data for the nitric oxide-water activated carbon system indicated that bubble-to-liquid transport, intraparticle diffusion, and the adsorption step could all influence the adsorption rate for high concentrations of carbon particles.

Notes: Thermal phenomena are associated with the operation of ice counter-washers, a major component for the separation of ice and brine in freeze crystallization processes. Melting, freezing, and channeling in the upper leg of the counterwasher occur because of the temperature difference between the wash water and the ice and have important effects on the operation of the device. In the present study, these phenomena are modeled and analyzed and their scaling laws derived. Ice and wash water temperature distributions as well as variations in porosity and wash water flow rate due to melting and freezing in the ice plug are computed and plotted. The effect of channeling on counterwasher operation is studied and formulated in terms of the channel dimensions and ice plug properties. Growth rates of channels due to melting by the wash water are calculated. Results indicate that warm wash water and slow motion of the ice plug cause rapid channel growth and may be deleterious to counterwasher operation. Best conditions for recovery from channeling are obtained with wash water temperature close to freezing and high plug velocity.

Notes: A mathematical model was developed for the direct reduction of hematite carried out in a countercurrent moving packed bed, and the process was simulated on a CDC 6400 computer. The response of the model to changes in the various process variables was investigated, and it was found that there is an optimum gas inlet composition (hydrogen-carbon monoxide) for a given set of operating conditions. In addition, an optimum gas inlet temperature was revealed for cases where pure carbon monoxide was used as the reducing gas. The feasibility of side stream injection of reducing gas was studied. The calculations showed that there are certain ranges of operating conditions for which the injection of a hot side stream is advantageous. This study represents the first reported simulation of direct reduction process having carbon monoxide-hydrogen gas mixtures as a reducing medium.

Notes: The system of a dispersed phase oscillating in a continuous medium is investigated theoretically with the specific purpose of developing a new technique for the measurement of interfacial viscous and elastic properties. By use of the well-known models of interfacial mechanics, the decay and frequency of liquid drops oscillating in a gas and of gas cavities oscillating in a liquid are computed as functions of dynamic interfacial properties. The results of the theory indicate, for the size range considered, that the elastic properties dominate over the viscous properties and that dilational effects dominate in the case of the drop in air and shear effects dominate in the case of the cavity in a liquid. The frequency does not seem to depend on the dynamic interfacial properties.

Notes: Two kinetic models of hydrocarbon hydrogenolysis over monometallic surfaces, based respectively on catalytically uniform or nonuniform surfaces, are applied to ethane and n-pentane hydrogenolysis results over copper-nickel alloy catalysts as well as the monometallic catalysts platinum and nickel. If no direct hydrogen desorption appears in any postulated irreversible step, both models predict the same composition for the important surface intermediates CnHx (n = 1, s), where x depends upon the catalyst. This analysis predicts that for essentially all alloy catalysts to which the postulated sequences may apply, the hydrogenolytic surface intermediate CnXx contains one more hydrogen atom than that calculated for a nickel catalyst: specifically, C2H3 (alloy) vs. C2H2 (nickel) for ethane and C5H6 (alloy) vs. C5H7 (nickel) for n-pentane.

Notes: A theoretical model is developed for steady state diffusion in reactive heterogeneous media in which simultaneous reversible chemical reactions occur between diffusible carrier species and the transported species. The heterogeneous systems analyzed are those for which one phase is dispersed as uniform spheres in a second continuous phase, and either or both phases may be reactive. The results have a simple physical interpretation in terms of additivity of resistances. The theory is applied to oxygen diffusion in blood.

Notes: The countercurrent backmixing model of a fluidized bed reactor predicts axial concentration profiles quite different from those suggested by simple two-phase models. The models can also be distinguished in terms of the dependence of conversion on operating variables. An experimental study of ozone decomposition in a reactor of 22.9 cm diameter has provided extensive data for comparison with backmixing and two-phase models which incorporate bubble size variation. The measured profiles show a minimum concentration within the bed at gas velocities above a critical value, as predicted only by the backmixing model. The effect of operating variables on the shape of the profiles is also well accounted for by this model. The backmixing model is further supported by good agreement between predicted and measured reactant conversion. In particular, the variation of conversion with rate constant and gas velocity is fitted more accurately by the backmixing model than by two-phase models.

Notes: Secondary nucleation of magnesium sulfate and citric acid was studied in a seeded back mixed crystallizer. The MSMPR type of exponential population density distribution was obtained above 8 μm size in quasi steady state operation. Growth rates were satisfactorily correlated with supersaturation. Nucleation rates correlated with supersaturation and slurry properties. Agitation level (RPM) did not have any significant effect on the nucleation rates, presumably implying surface regeneration limited nucleation.

Notes: The effects of particle shape and orientation upon diffusive transport processes occurring within unconsolidated porous media are investigated analytically. By means of a generalization of an earlier presented geometric model, diffusivities are predicted for both anisotropic systems (represented by swarms of aligned oblate or prolate spheroids) and isotropic systems (represented by swarms of randomly orientated spheroids). Theoretical predictions are compared with experimental data reported in the literature.

Notes: A new approach is presented for the construction of linear, low-order stable, state-variable, dynamic models from experimental pulse response data of process systems: the problem of practical realization. This problem is solved by deriving and implementing constraints in the estimation of Markov parameters which are input to a realization algorithm. This is accomplished sequentially by using an algorithm for recursive partial realization. Bounds on the Markov parameters are derived from qualitative information about the smoothness of the response curve and used in a stagewise regression procedure. The presente procedure identifies the faster modes first; hence the tail of the pulse response, if inordinately long and inaccurate, may be ignored while lower-order partial realizations are constructed.

Notes: A model describing two consecutive gas-liquid reactors in a continously stirred-tank reactor is developed with reaction factors used to account for the interactions between the chemical and transport rate processes. A parametric numerical study revealed several interesting effects, including the existence of up to seven steady state solutions. The predictions of the model adequately describe the steady state multiplicity observed during the chlorination of liquid n-decane. It is shown that the steady state multiplicity can serve as an excellent tool for discriminating among rival models and estimation of kinetic parameters.

Notes: The axial destribution of reactivity inside a fluid-bed contactor is studied for the hydrogenation of ethylene. The reactivity is large near the surface of the dense phase. The significant effect of the dilute phase, or the free board region, is verified experimentally, and the contact efficiency in the transition zone and in the dilute phase is obtained. The contact efficiency was approximated by ηc = 1 - 0.75 (∊e/∊ede)0.4. The temperature rise in the dilute phase is measured in the small reactor. The transition zone between the dense and dilute phases is almost isothermal, but it is found that temperature increases in the dilute phase.

Notes: Experimental and theoretical work on the rheological properties of suspensions are reviewed. Attention is focused on systems consisting of rigid, neutrally buyoant particles suspended in Newtonian fluids; no restrictions, however, are placed on the concentration of the particles or on the forces acting in the suspension. The assumption that an effective viscosity depending solely on the volume fraction of the particles suffices to describe the rheology of suspensions is examined and shown to be inadequate. Indeed, the experimental evidence strongly supports the view that suspensions behave macroscopically as non-Newtonian fluids whose rheological properties are influenced by a large number of factors; these factors are listed. The various theories that have been put forward to explain the flow of suspensions are discussed, with particular emphasis being placed on the nature of the approximations made, so that purely empirical formulas can be clearly separated from those having a theoretical basis. Suggestions for future work, both theoretical and experimental, are provided.

Notes: The mass transfer rate to fluid spheres is calculated for power law and Newtonian fluids by using the intermediate Reynolds number stream functions of Nakano and Tien (1970) and Yamaguchi et al. (1974), respectively. The Sh increases with increases in Re and Pe and decreases in n. Better results are obtained with Nakano and Tien's functions when Re 〉 10 and with Yamaguchi's functions when Re 〈 10.

Notes: The role of n-butane in the formation of hydrates has been a matter of some uncertainty. The experimental measurements resulting from this work have shown conclusively that n-butane does enter the hydrate lattice when hydrates are formed in the presence of methane at pressures from about 1 000 to 10 000 kPa over a temperature range from 0° to about 13°C. At higher pressures and temperatures, n-butane ceases to enter the crystal and behaves like a nonhydrate former.

Notes: A minimum cost design problem for a single-reaction fluidized-bed reactor system is analyzed in this paper. The problem's mathematical interest stems from Wilde's statements (1974) that there can be only two types of design to this nonlinear, nonconvex, multimodal problem. It is shown by a direct search procedure that, in fact, there are at least four types of optimal design. Furthermore, the type 3, rather than the type 1 design, is the global solution to the numerical example considered in Wilde's work, if the required auxiliary cooler cost is excluded.

Notes: The fundamental understanding of coal and its behavior under gasification conditions is far from complete, but significant insights into the complex chemical and physical phenomena have been achieved. This review of available fundamental information focuses on thermal decomposition of coal in inert gas and in hydrogen, with emphasis on the effects on yield of products exerted by time, temperature, heating rate, pressure, hydrogen partial pressure, and particle size, and on the development of chemical and transport models of engineering importance.

Notes: A two-region model of a spouted bed, postulating vertical plug flow of gas in the spout and dispersed plug flow along curved streamlines in the annulus, is proposed. The extent of axial dispersion is accounted for by a coefficient D which is an adjustable parameter of the model. Experimental support for the theory is provided by residence time-distribution data obtained by using helium gas as tracer, covering a wide range of conditions. Values of the coefficient D, determined from a comparison between predicted and observed RTD curves, are generally higher than those reported for packed beds but much smaller than those for fluidized beds.

Notes: The major parameters in the design of spray dryers are discussed. A Lagrangian approach, combining experimental data with theoretical concepts, is proposed to develop design methods. Vortex flow patterns, obtained experimentally in a laboratory size chamber, are correlated and presented.Based on this design methodology, computational methods are given to calculate droplet trajectories and hence to predict the optimum chamber dimensions and operating conditions for maximum thermal efficiency and/or minimum operating cost. Application of these basic principles is illustrated by the design of an industrial size, spray drying chamber for a specific feed solution and production rate.

Notes: A major, national program to exploit geothermal energy requires creative chemical engineering solutions to a wide array of difficult problems. With some overlap, most of the problems fall into these categories: resource development and management, energy extraction and utilization, power cycle design and optimization, environmental engineering, and corrosion and scaling of equipment. Reinjection of waste fluids, insofar as it proves feasible, will affect the shape of the solutions in all categories.Convective hydrothermal reservoirs, the most accessible and well characterized of geothermal resources, are immense, permeable media in which heat and mass transport are coupled with chemical reaction. Despite decades of effort, no satisfactory physical or mathematical model exists for any reservoir. Even less is known about the hot rock and geopressured resources, which also may be utilized ultimately.Electric power production receives primary emphasis in the United States, both in terms of current utilization and of research and development. Worldwide, however, the total power devoted to agricultural activities, space heating and cooling, and process heat applications is greater than that to electric power conversion.Because hydrothermal reservoirs are low temperature (〈350°C) sources of corrosive fluids, much current development effort aims at power cycles that promise enhanced efficiencies and that avoid some of the problems of corrosion and scaling. Among the candidates are several binary cycles which employ secondary working fluids, and the total flow concept, which utilizes two-phase flow from the production wells.Once thought to be all but negligible, the environmental effects of geothermal installations have recently been subjected to informed scrutiny and found nonnegligible. Among the problem areas are gaseous effluents including hydrogen sulfide, mercury, radon, ammonia, and H3BO3 and aqueous emissions that contain heavy metals. Reinjection of waste geothermal fluids would ameliorate many environmental impacts but could be complicated by silica deposition in equipment and in the underground reservoir.

Notes: A mathematical model is developed for a styrene pilot plant reactor. The steady state version of this model was used to optimize the location of a steam injection port part way along the catalytic bed. Significant improvement in reactor performance was predicted by splitting the steam feed between the reactor inlet and the injection port. Performance was measured in terms of market value of products minus a utility cost for the steam. Studies were also carried out via computer simulation to determine optimal operating conditions. An important result was the relationship of optimal steam-to-ethylbenzene feed ratio to the kinetic parameters which describe the main dehydrogenation reaction. A pilot plant was constructed and operated in order to investigate experimentally the predictions of the mathematical model. Instrumentation was designed and installed so that an on-line digital computer could acquire process measurements directly and establish operating conditions. The experimental program confirmed the improved performance by operation of the reactor with a steam injection port and the existence of an optimum of the steam-to-ethylbenzene feed ratio as indicated by simulation.

Notes: The discrete residence time distribution applies to systems under periodic control. A system consisting of a plate column has been modeled to allow the generation of the discrete residence time distribution. The parameters in the model have been evaluated by measurements of entrainment, holdup, and the step response of the column under direct computer control. A least-squares minimization technique provided confirmation of the modeling procedures.

Notes: Experimental measurements were made of the steady oxygen permeation rate through films of nonreactive and reactive dispersions, including suspensions of red blood cells. The data compare well with a theoretical analysis which incorporates a one-step reversible reaction within the dispersed phase. In the absence of reaction, the red cell permeability could be treated as that of a concentrated hemoglobin solution. For reactive suspensions of red cells or water-in-oil emulsions containing hemoglobin at 25°C, substantial facilitation of oxygen transport occurred when oxyhemoglobin gradients were steep, but both the data and the theory exhibited considerably less facilitation than would be suggested by an equilibrium analysis.

Notes: This paper presents a commentary on the status of application of modern control theories to industrial chemical processes. The difficulties encountered in the implementation of advanced control to chemical reactors are critically examined in order to determine the reasons for its limited success to date. Chemical processes, very often poorly understood because of the physicochemical complexities, are nonlinear, highly interacting, spacially dependent, and continuously disturbed by many uncharacterized noises. It is time-consuming and expensive to develop advanced control methods for these systems because few of the available theories can be applied directly. Thus, we often find it difficult to economically justify advanced control projects.

Notes: Analytical relationships between velocity profiles and flow resistance data are developed for suspensions of papermaking fibers in turbulent shear. The relationships apply to suspensions of synthetic fibers. The wall layer appears to be unaffected by the presence of fibers, and the cause of drag reduction can be attributed to the turbulent core region.
