Description / Table of Contents: Der Abbau der Passivschicht auf Eisen durch HalogenideDer Angriff von Cl-, Br- und I- auf die Passivschicht des Eisens wurde mit XPS untersucht.
Notes: The attack of Cl-, Br-, and I- on the passive layer of iron has been studied by XPS. A pronounced thinning of the oxide is found. The effect decreases in the sequence of ions mentioned above and increases with the halide concentration. With the rotating ring disc technique no increase in Fe3+ dissolution was detected before pit nucleation. Apparently the oxide thinning is a relatively slow process leading to the breakdown of passivity which occurs locally or generally depending on the kind and concentration of the halides.

Description / Table of Contents: Behaviour of thermoplastic materials in aggressive Media - Influence of morphology on the example of high density polyethyleneTo a certain degree the morphology of thermoplastic intermediate products can be influenced either by using different fabrication techniques (molding, extrusion) or in case of a special technique e.g. by varying the cooling conditions. Plates and pipes produced from unpigmented PE-HD granule of a certain batch, differing in morphology only were exposed to a physically active medium (p-xylene), a chemically active medium (50% chromic acid) and a surface-active medium (2% wetting-agent). Apart from immersion-tests at varying temperatures creep-experiments on plates under constant load were carried out.The registered differences in sorption, creep-compliance, cracking etc. are discussed in context with the different morphological structures (e.g. crystalline phase).

Description / Table of Contents: The influence of different nitrate contents of drinking water on the corrosion behaviour of galvanized steel pipesAt the water works Biblis and Alsbach of Südhessische Gas und Wasser AG, Darmstadt, field tests were performed over a period of 2 1/2 years to describe the influence of different nitrate contents in drinking water and the corrosion behaviour of different qualities of galvanized steel pipes. The results obtained showed, that weight loss and corrosion rate measurements give no information on this subject. Optical inspection and flushing tests could prove, that selective corrosion occurred in the water with higher nitrate content.Galvannealed pipes showed local corrosion attack after a certain exposition time in water with higher nitrate content, depending on flow velocity. Air blown galvanized pipes and galvannealed pipes in water with higher nitrate content additionally produce „Zinkgeriesel“ during flushing. The selective corrosion attack also takes place to a very small extent in galvanized steel pipes, where quality is in accordance to the German Standard DIN 2444.

Description / Table of Contents: Measures against the chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking of austenitic steelsThe chlorid-induced stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steels is much feared because it can cause as well extensive damage of apparatus fast and unexpectedly as loss of production. It is controlled by six parameters cooperating in a manner which is difficult to over-look. The greatest imponderabilities are due to the state of mechanical stress in the material. A testing method was developed which allows to recognize the danger surely and to use the metal-removing pickling as the most economic measure against stress corrosion cracking.

Description / Table of Contents: The influence of increased neutral salt content on the corrosion behaviour of non-alloyed steel in well buffered drinking watersThe influence of higher neutral salt contents in well buffered drinking water on the corrosion behaviour of unalloyed steel pipes is described in this paper. The tests were mainly performed by differential methods to measure corrosion rate and iron uptake rate. It could be shown, that higher contents in chloride and sulphate increase corrosion and even more iron uptake rate. Nitrates have no measurable effect. Additionally, it could be shown, that an increase in neutral salts leads to increased local corrosion. Further research in this field by using drinking waters with low buffer capacity will be performed and reported later on.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of chloride content in tap water on the corrosion of unalloyed steelRegarding the effect of neutral salts in tap water on the corrosion of unalloyed steel, little data is available, some of it being contradictory. This applies in particular to chlorides. In the present paper, disks rotating at velocities of from 0-2000 min-1 and pipes through which tap water flows have been used to investigate, for various water supplies (Ludwigshafen, Leverkusen and Berlin tapwater) and as a function of the chloride concentration (0.28-15.5 mol m-3) and of the test period (up to 10 000 hours), the area-related linear rates of loss in weight, the fractional corroded surface areas, the through depths and pit depths, and the distribution of elements in the surface layers.
Long-term tests showed that, even for different tap waters, the chloride content has no effect on the linear corrosion rate, this being from 0.03-0.06 mm a-1. This was the most important result obtained.

Description / Table of Contents: Electrode kinetics of high purity iron in phosphate electrolytes under solid particle impact (Simulation of erosion corrosion)Erosion-corrosion of high purity iron was simulated by means of a vibration cell in a neutral phosphate electrolyte. The investigations were carried out to explain the initiation processes of this type of corrosion. The results confirm the general conception of the central role of reaction layer destruction in erosion-corrosion processes. Under these conditions a qualitative change in reaction layer formation occur. By solid impact the layers are destroyed locally and so conditions of pit nucleation exist. The destruction of the layers depends on the action of shear forces resulting from tensile or compressive strains.

Description / Table of Contents: Meaning and history of the term “corrosion”Rust, final product of the corrosion of iron, has been well-known to human beings since the most distant ages. This is the subject of a detailed literature. Less reliable on the contrary is our knowledge from the first use of terms of corrosion for the description of proceedings of corrosion. As far as could be ascertained till now, the notion „corroded“ has been published for the first in the year 1667 by the description of a voyage to the Caribe-Islands in the Philosophical Transactions and in 1669 in the same journal the substantive „corrosion“ likely has been used for the first designating the corrosion of a metal by the strong action of the mineral waters of an English medical well upon silver coins. In the year 1678 the Philosophical Transactions then describe as far as could be ascertained for the first till now a case of amelioration of the constructive material in a salt-pit, basing on preceeding tests in plant. The paper describes the first use of corrosion terms in various countries.

Description / Table of Contents: Permeation behaviour of hydrogen in a stable austenitic stainless steelElectrochemical method was used to study the effects of the passive film, polarization potential and the pH value in the solution on the permeation behaviour of hydrogen in the stable austenitic stainless steel 310. The diffusion coefficient of hydrogen at 25°C in this steel was determined to be (1.2 ± 0.1) ± 10-12 m2s-1, and that of the passive film was estimated to be about 10-21 m2s-1. The saturated hydrogen permeation current was increased with the decrease of the pH-value in the solution; it was also increased not only with the increase of cathodic polarization potential, but also with the increase of the anodic polarization potential if it is above the breakdown potential of the passive film.

Notes: With respect to the behavior of Nuclear Pressurized Water Reactor fuel cladding during accidents the oxidation kinetics of Zircaloy-4 tubing in steam and the related changes in the mechanical properties have been investigated. Short tube sections were exposed to steam between 600 and 1600°C under isothermal and temperature transient conditions. Tube capsules were creep-rupture tested in steam under isothermal/isobaric (600-1300°C, 7-150 bar) and various temperature/pressure transient conditions. The oxidation kinetics of Zircaloy-4 is described in case of shortterm reaction by simple rate laws. The long-term behavior is proved to be highly influenced by the breakaway transition and finally by total consumption of the tube wall. On the basis of the isothermal behavior the short-term temperature transient case can be understood and also modelled. Deviations from predictable behavior are the consequences of Zr- and ZrO2-phase transformations. The protective character of preexistent scales is lost above 1100°C for the same reason. The consequences of oxidation on the mechanical properties are increased strength and decreased ductility, whereas the response to creep deformation is an overall increase in oxidation due to oxide cracking.

Description / Table of Contents: Korrosion von Hochtemperaturlegierungen im Helium des Primärkreises von gasgekühlten Hochtemperaturreaktoren.
Notes: The interaction of Ni and Fe-Ni base alloys with the reactive impurities H2O, CO, H2 and CH4 in simulated cooling gas of the primary circuit of the High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (HTGR) causes corrosion effects that can significantly influence the mechanical properties. Apart from the formation of surface scales (oxides, carbides or mixed oxides/carbides), structural changes of the alloys are observed; depending on gas composition, gas supply rate and test temperature, carburization or decarburization can occur. In this report it is shown that an interpretation of the basic corrosion effects is possible on the basis of a modified stability diagram for chromium provided that- the kinetics of elementary gas metal reactions are incorporated in the expressions for carbon activity and oxygen partial pressure of the atmosphere and- the gradients of the potentials across the surface scales are taken into account. The interpretation allows the derivation of the corrosion behaviour of NiCr-base alloys in different HTGR helium compositions and enables the limits for the formation of protective chromia surface scales to be given. The influence of alloying elements other than chromium can be explained qualitatively. The results can be transferred to other reactive gas mixtures, which are characterized by an oxygen partial pressure near to the dissociation pressure of the scale forming oxides.

Description / Table of Contents: Electrochemical measurements of passivation behaviour of austenitic CrNi steels in sulfuric acid solutionsThe determination of passivation current densities, passivation potentials and potentials of complete passivation of austenitic CrNi-and CrNiMo-stainles steels, using potentiodynamically measured current potential curves in 0.5 m H2SO4, is disturbed by means of the superposition of cathodic partial current potential curves. By addition of KSCN the measuring will be possible through poisoning the hydrogen evolution, that is why by the addition of KSCN both the total current potential curves and the partial current potential curves become identically with each other. The influence of an addition of KSCN in the range between 10-5 and 10-2 mass-% on the anodic dissolution of austenitic CrNi- and CrNiMo-stainless steels in deaerated 0.5 m H2SO4 is studied by means of potentiodynamically measured polarization curves (0.02 V min-1). It is proposed to determine these characteristics in deaerated 0.05 m or 0.5 m H2SO4 with an addition of KSCN of 10-4 mass-%, if the examinations should be comparable. These experimental conditions lead to real values of passivation current densities with excellent reproducibility.

Notes: Targets of this work have been: testing of duplex stainless steel in field (into a geothermal well) and in laboratory NACE environment in presence of crevices and sharp defects; development of testing based on fracture mechanics and comparsion with traditional testing approach. The following types of specimens have been used: smooth specimens for tensile tests at constant load with artificial crevices, U-bend specimens and 1/2″ WOL-modified fracture mechanics specimens. The results are only in partial accordance with available literature data and suggest to be very careful in extending laboratory results to real conditions, where, for instance, crevices and sharp defects always exist.

Description / Table of Contents: Strömungsabhängige Korrosion - II.
Notes: The corrosion behaviour of non alloyed steel, cast iron, and 13% chromium steel has been investigated in chloride containing media without and with sand (one-phase and two-phase flow) at various flow velocities. In one-phase flow mass transfer determined corrosion prevails with the structure and composition of surface layer being the dominating factor. In two-phase flow mainly erosion corrosion is observed together with a strong influence of hydrodynamic parameters. Particular emphasis is given to the experimental techniques required for the investigation of flow dependent corrosion.

Notes: The corrosion behavior of Zircaloy-4 in 1 N H2SO4 with small amounts of NaF was investigated by means of radionuclide technical and electrochemical methods. In this corrosion system cladding hulls of spent fuel elements were corroded under potentiostatic control. The activity of released radionuclides was measured as a function of wall loss. From this the distribution pattern of these nuclides in the wall of the fuel hull can be calculated. Fission products show pronounced concentration profiles in the first 10 m̈m. Activation products exhibit constant activities in the wall material.

Description / Table of Contents: Considerations on the correlations between inhibition of metal dissolution and hydrogen absorption in the use of acid inhibitorsEvaluating literature data on the impact of 53 quarternary ammonium salts, 13 aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes and 12 aliphatic and aromatic ketones on the inhibition of the rate of metal dissolution and the hydrogen permeation currents at steel in H2S-free and H2S-saturated 16% hydrochloric acid at ambient temperature, it is demonstrated by rank correlation considerations that there is no correlation between activity in blocking the metal dissolution rate and efficiency in decreasing the hydrogen absorption rate of the metal. Furthermore, there is no correlation between antipromotor/promotor-efficiency at the free corrosion potential and at cathodic polarization in H2S-free and H2S-saturated acid. Problems of H-absorption therefore have to be investigated for any particular case under conditions as close to the practice as possible.

Description / Table of Contents: Stress corrosion cracking of unalloyed steels in liquid ammoniaIn this work is reported on investigations about stress corrosion cracking of steels in liquid ammonia aimed at ascertaining the parameters and the ranges within which they are effective, finding the mechanism responsible for the damage of spherical pressure vessels and developing protective measures. The investigations are based partly on corrosion tests in which welded Jones samples of various unalloyed and low alloyed steels in different states of heat treatment were immersed in ammonia for long periods in a spherical ammonia storage vessel. For laboratory tests we used an apparatus specially developed to enable round tensile test bars to be tested in liquid ammonia under CERT conditions at the open circuit potential and under electrochemical control. In these tests selectively added impurities were determined quantitatively by gas chromatography. The results of the investigations show that the oxygen content of the ammonia has a decisive influence on the initiation of stress corrosion cracking in unalloyed steels. Even low O2 concentrations (ßß2 ppm) lead to a risk of stress corrosion cracking. Addition of water in sufficient quantity inhibits the stress corrosion cracking. The water concentration needed to inhibit corrosion differs according to the material concerned (StE 355: 〉 500 ppm; H I: 〉 650 ppm; StE 460: 〉 1000 ppm H2O). The different stress corrosion behaviour of the investigated steels under residual and operating stresses shows their different sensitivity. So in absence of stress relieve heat treatment only Jones samples of StE 355 remained crack-free.Investigations into the influence of potential on crack formation showed that the damage follows an anodic crack formation mechanism, since it is capable of being reinforced anodically and inhibited cathodically. Similarly the inhibitive effect of water is reduced by anodic polarization. But stress corrosion cracking cannot be induced by anodic polarization alone, i.e. in the absence of O2.As a practical conclusion it may be said that the presence of oxygen - even in traces - must be avoided.Addition of water inhibits stress corrosion cracking; these additions are therefore recommended wherever they are possible.Containers should be made of StE 355 and they should be stress relieve annealed.Cathodic protection is considered appropriate, but the practicability under operating conditions has to be still investigated.

Description / Table of Contents: Embrittlement conditions of ferritic chromium steels and influence on the corrosion fatigue behaviourThe corrosion fatigue behavior of two ferritic stainless steels, with 18% and 28% chromium respectively, embrittled by α'- or sigma-phase has been studied in this investigation. No effect of the α'-phase on the corrosion fatigue behaviour in a 0.5 N or 4 N air saturated soldium chloride solution at 80 °C has been found. In the 4 N solution corrosion fatigue cracking of the 18% chromium steel in the solutionized as well as in the α'-embrittled condition is initiated by pitting at nonmetallic inclusions. Sigma-phase not only decreases the mechanical properties of the 28% chromium steel by heavy embrittlement but also leads to crack initiation by pitting in the 4 N solution at the interface sigma/ferrite. The pronounced decrease of the corrosion fatigue properties of the 28% chromium steel could well be correlated with chromium depletion of the ferrite matrix by precipitation of sigma phase.

Notes: Ac impedance investigations were performed at high-purity iron and mild steel in de-aerated 10% hydrochloric acid under free corrosion at room temperature in the presence of quaternary ammonium compounds. Systematic studies of specially selected and synthesized pyridinium and quinolinium derivatives revealed that the inhibition efficiency increases with increasing number of aromatic systems in the molecule and is determined not only by geometric and electronic molecule factors influencing the adsorption but also by dielectric effects exerted by the inhibitor molecule after adsorption. Most of the substances tested were significantly less effective on steel than on high-purity iron. The best results at all materials were found with 1-naph-thylmethylquinolinium chloride.

Notes: A general theoretical and methodological approach to local dissolution and hydrogen embrittlement contributions to stress corrosion cracking in various structural materials is discussed. According to this approach a quantified determination of the hydrogen embrittlement contribution to stress corrosion cracking in high-strength steels, titanium, aluminium, and zirconium, and zirconium alloys appears to be possible. On the basis of a few postulates, a quantitative concept of hydrogen permeability of the passivating film at the tip of a crack in the metal is developed; this concept allows for the first time a quantified determination of the relationship between critical hydrogen concentration and stress intensity factor in steels, titanium, and aluminium, and aluminium alloys under hydrogen embrittlement. Two new methods for studying adsorption processes at the tip of a growing crack during stress corrosion cracking are an additional outflow of this concept.
