    Notes: Die Walzhaut ist infolge ihrer erwiesenen Unzuverlässigkeit vor Beginn der eigentlichen Schutzmaßnahmen zu entfernen. Auch die „vorläufigen“ Stahlgrundierungen werden am besten mit reiner Bleimennige oder Bleimennige V40 ausgeführt, die dauernd auf der Stahlfläche verbleiben können. Mit Ausnahme der Bleimennige V40 sind bei der Bundesbahn nach wie vor keinerlei Verschnitte zugelassen. Im Unterwasser-Anstrich gewinnen die Phthalatharz-Bindemittel zunehmend an Bedeutung. „Echte“ Passivierungsmittel müssen genügend „aktivierbaren“ Sauerstoff enthalten. Bei Einhaltung der behördlichen Sicherheits-Vorschriften können auch bleireiche Anstrichstoffe gefahrlos im Spritzverfahren aufgetragen werden. Die Lebensdauer ist und bleibt der einzig zuverlässige Wertmesser für Anstrichstoffe.

    Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the Changing of the Properties f Water by Weak Direct CurrentsWeak direct currents of a certain tension which are applied to hot water supply and heating installations are well known to prevent the corrosion of the walls being in touch of water if the supply points are not too far away. Today nobody denies any more the existence of this cathodic protection though its mechanism has not yet been cleared. For more than twenty years experts assert that weak direct currents would alter the chemical behavior of water so that aggressive water becomes unaggressive and scale depositing water would lose this property. This has always been controverted. But as the latter maintaining could be confirmed by many practical experiences in working plants and as there is no explanation for such an effectiveness of weak direct currents investigations were carried out in working hot water supply and heating installations protected by weak direct currents. These experiments had to clear the change of the properties of the water and whether the result would allow to explain the anti-corrosive and anti-scale effectiveness of weak cathodic currents. This article contains the hitherto obtained results of these investigations.
    Notes: Es ist bekannt, daß schwacher, niedrig gespannter Gleichstrom bestimmter Stärke, der in Warmwasserversorgungs- und Heizungsanlagen an geeigneter Stelle künstlich eingeführt wird, Korrosion auf den wasserberührten Wandungen dieser Anlagen, soweit deren Entfernung von der Stromeinführungsstelle ein bestimmtes Maß nicht überschreitet, zu verhüten vermag. Das Vorhandensein dieses „kathodischen Schutzes“ wird heute nicht mehr bestritten, wenn man auch sein wahres Wesen bis jetzt noch nicht klar erklären kann. Bestritten wird aber noch immer die sei etwa 20 Jahren von Praktikern aufgestellte Behauptung, daß schwacher, niedrig gespannter Gleichstrom die chemische Beschaffenheit des vom Strom durchflossenen Wassers so zu verändern vermag, daß von Natur aggressives Wasser nicht aggressiv wird und steinbildendes Wasser die Steinbildungsfähigkeit verliert. Weil nun diese letztere Behauptung durch viele praktische Erfahrungen in betriebenen Anlagen bestätigt wird, aber Gründe für die behauptete Wirksamkeit des schwachen Gleichstroms bisher nicht erkennbar sind, wurden Untersuchungen in betriebenen, durch Aufprägung von schwachem Gleichstrom geschützten Warmwasserversorgungs- und Heizungsanlagen durchgeführt, die zunächst feststellen sollten, worin diese Veränderung besteht, und ob sie die korrosions-und steinverhütende Wirkung von künstlich aufgeprägtem schwachen Gleichstrom erklären kann. Der vorliegende Aufsatz enthält die bisherigen Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchungen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Reactions between CuO and Fe resp. Fe3O4 in Solid State and their O2 and Water Vapor InfluencesThe reaction of CuO with Fe is detectable by means of the heating curves method at a temperature of at least 193°C. This reaction is activated by oxygen. Under these conditions it starts at lower temperatures but runs as if there would be no oxygen. Oxygen and water vapor are capable to increase suddenly the rate of reaction so that high temperatures appear. Under the same conditions but in absence of these two gases the reaction proceeds at a slow rate. CuO reacts upon Fe3O4 in a similar way. The heating curve of this reaction shows but no maximum.The formation of metallic copper and the local appearance of high temperatures are of considerable importance for the practice of steam plants. The formation of Fe2O3 by the reaction between CuO and Fe3O4 is just as well important for the determination of the type of corrosion.
    Notes: Die Umsetzung von CuO mit Fe ist nach der Methode der Erhitzungskurven schon ab 193° C nachweisbar. Diese Reaktion wird durch O2 angeregt, so daß sie dann bei niedrigeren Temperaturen beginnt und abläuft als bei Abwesenheit von Sauerstoff. O2 und H2O-Dampf sind in der Lage, die Reaktion plötzlich ablaufen zu lassen, so daß hohe Temperaturen entstehen, während sie bei Abwesenheit dieser beiden Gase unter gleichen Reaktionsbedingungen langsam verläuft. Ähnlich wie mit Fe reagiert CuO auch mit Fe3O4. Bei dieser Reaktion tritt aber kein Maximum in der Erhitzungskurve auf.In Bezug auf die Praxis im Dampfbetrieb ist die Entstehung von metallischem Kupfer von Bedeutung und die Tatsache, daß hohe örtliche Temperaturen auftreten können. Die Entstehung von Fe2O3 durch die Umsetzung zwischen CuO und Fe3O4 ist für die Beurteilung von Korrosionen ebenfalls von Bedeutung.

    Description / Table of Contents: Material Secting Viewpoints for Contact Catalysts. Part II. Behavior and Properties of semiconducting CatalystsCondensed from the late literature non metal contact agents of the heterogenous catalysis are reviewed with respect to their semiconducting properties. By means of numerous works of different sources a causality between catalytic activity and electronic disturbances could be proved. In the discussion of some special types of reaction-decomposition of N2O, H2O2, O3, oxidation of CO, SO2, NH3, numerous reactions of hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, dehydration and some rearrangements and cleavages of organic molecules-two general kinds of reaction were created. Donator reactions forming kations of the reactants at a measurable rate on the surface of the contact during the course of reaction, are catalysed well by p-conducting agents. Acceptor reactions, characterized by a formation of anions in the velocity terminating intermediate reactions, are catalysed favorably by n-conductors.Electronic disturbances will always be ineffective if an innermolecular rearrangement, proceeding without any electron transition to or from the contact, becomes termitating velocity of reaction. By means of the semiconducting properties many causalities between the catalytic activity and the material properties of the contacts can be deduced for numerous contacts and reactions. The causalities, however, are of qualitative character and limited validity as the essential factors for catalytic reactions can only be demonstrated exactly with regard to the surface bonds of the activated complex (intermediate state).
    Notes: Nichtmetallische Kontaktmassen der heterogenen Katalyse werden vom Blickwinkel ihrer Halbleitereigenschaften aus in Form einer Zusammenfassung neuerer Literatur betrachtet. An Hand zahlreicher Arbeiten aus verschiedensten Quellen kann gezeigt werden, daß zwischen der katalytischen Wirksamkeit und der elektronischen Fehlordnung der Kontakte kausale Zusammenhänge bestehen. Bei der Besprechung einzelner Reaktionstypen - des N2O-Zerfalls, der CO-Oxydation, des H2O2-Zerfalls, des Ozonzerfalls, der SO2-Oxydation der NH3-Oxydation, zahlreicher Hydrierungs-, Dehydrierungs- und Dehydratisierungsreaktionen und einiger Umlagerung- und Spaltreaktionen organischer Molekeln-wird zwischen zwei Reaktionsarten unterschieden. DONATOR-Reaktionen, die während des Reaktions-Ablaufs mit meßbarer Geschwindigkeit Kationen der Reaktanten an der Katalysatoroberfläche ausbilden, werden durch p-leitende Katalysatoren gut katalysiert. AKZEPTOR-Reaktionen, gekennzeichnet durch eine Anionenausbildung im geschwindigkeitsbestimmenden Teilschritt der Reaktion, werden durch n-Leiter bevorzugt katalysiert.Ohne Einfluß ist die Fehlordnung immer dann, wenn Umlagerungen innerhalb der Molekeln, die ohne einen Elektronenübergang zum (oder vom) Katalysator verlaufen, geschwindigkeitsbestimmend werden.Mit Hilfe der Halbleitereigenschaften lassen sich für zahlreiche Kontakte und Reaktionen Zusammenhänge zwischen katalytischer Wirksamkeit und den Stoffeigenschaften des Kontaktes herleiten. Diese Zusammenhänge tragen jedoch nur qualitativen Charakter und sind nur beschränkt gültig, da die für die katalytische Reaktion wesentlichen Faktoren nur durch die Oberflächenbindung des aktivierten Komplexes (Zwischenzustandes) streng dargestellt werden können.

    Description / Table of Contents: Systematic Investigations to Test the Anticorrosive Efficacy of VPI upon a number of common MetalsIndustry pays increasing attention to Vapor Phase Inhibitor protection against corrosion. Thus far the application of this method was limited to steel products chiefly where excellent results could be expected in any case. In the course of this work the behavior of many common metals and alloys upon VPI were investigated systematically. The experiments made certain that the corrosive effect of atmospheric influences upon iron and non ferrous metals could be prevented. Herewith exact datas are available for the interested branches of industry so that they could make use of the numerous advantages of the VPI method.
    Notes: Der Korrosionsschutz mittels „Vapor Phase Inhibitor“ findet in der Industrie immer stärkere Beachtung. Bislang beschränkte sich die Anwendung dieses Verfahrens hauptsächlich auf Stahlerzeugnisse, bei denen in jedem Fall vorzügliche Ergebnisse zu erwarten sind. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden die Verhaltensweisen auch anderer viel verwendeter Metalle und Metallegierungen gegen VPI systematisch untersucht. Es wurde nachgewiesen, daß die korrodierende Wirkung atmosphärischer Einflüsse auch bei Eisen- und Nichteisenmetallen verhindert werden kann. Den einschlägigen Industrie-zweigen stehen damit exakte Unterlagen zur Verfügung, so daß nun auch dort die vielfachen Vorteile des VPI-Verfahrens nutzbringend angewendet werden können.

The column was manufactured by the Metal Propellers Ltd. and is made of monel which meets all requirements of an corrosion resisting material.
    Notes: Es erfolgt die Beschreibung einer Abscheidesäle für die Regenerierung von Ätznatron-Methanol-Mercaptan-Lösungen in der Raffinerie der Lobitos Oilfields Ltd., Ellesmere Port, welche nach dem von der Universal Oil Products Company entwickelten Unisol-Prozess arbeitet. Die Säule wurde von der Metal Propellers Lt. aus Monel hergestellt. Es wird gezeigt, daß Monel in Korrosionstechnischer Hinsicht allen Anforderungen als Werkstoff gewachsen ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: Studies on the Corrosion of IronThere are two different modifications of iron oxides. The first is ferromagnetic having p-structure while the second is paramagnetic and has a α-structure. The formation of p-iron rust takes place in moist air. α-iron rust is formed by aqueous solutions of strong oxidising reagents or by organic agents. The magnetic behavior of the iron oxides allows to reconstruct the conditions of their formation. The results of the magnetic test comply with those of the X-ray fine structure investigations.
    Notes: Eisenoxyde existieren in zwei verschiedenen Modifikationen, einer ferromagnetischen mit γ-Struktur und einer paramagnetischen mit α-Struktur. Zur Bildung von γ-Eisenrost kommt es in feuchter Luft, zu der von α-Eisenrost in Wasser mit starken Oxydationsmitteln oder in organischen Mitteln. Das magnetische Verhalten der Eisenoxyde läßt auf die Art der Rostbildung zurückschließen. Das Ergebnis der Magnetprüfung deckt sich mit dem von Röntgen-Feinstruktur-Untersuchungen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Behaviour of Materials with Regards to FluorineIn the technical literature of the last five years, a large number of reports have been published about the behaviour of materials with regards to gaseous and liquid Fluorine. A summation and sifling of this scattered knowledge, leads to a general view of the present level of our knowledge about the handling of this aggressive material.Those metals which are not attacked by Fluorine, are nickel and its alloys with about 30% of copper, but also non-alloy steels, copper and aluminium are resistant to dry Fluorine. Carbon is the material used for electrodes in the electrolytical manufacture process of Fluorine. Oxydeceramic materials and some special acid resistant cements can be used to handle Fluorine. Glass and quartz are hardly attacked by the dry gas, even up to quite high temperatures. Organic materials are in general non-resistant.
    Notes: In der Fachliteratur der letzten fünf Jahre ist eine große Zahl von Mitteilungen über das Verhalten der Werkstoffe gegenüber gasförmigem und flüssigem Fluor veröffentlicht worden. Eine Zusammenfassung und Sichtung dieser zerstreut vorliegenden Erkenntnisse führt zu einem Überblick über den heutigen Stand unseres Wissens hinsichtlich der Handhabung dieses aggressiven Stoffes.Die gegen Fluor beständigsten Metalle sind Nickel und seine Legierungen mit etwa 30% Kupfer, aber auch unlegierter Stahl sowie Kupfer und Aluminium sind gegen trockenes Fluor resistant. Kohlenstoff wird als Elektrodenmaterial für die elektrolytische Fluor-Herstellung verwendet. Oxydkeramische Stoffe und einige säurebeständige Spezialkitte sind für die Handhabung von Fluor geeignet und auch Glas und Quarz werden von dem trockenen Gas bis zu recht hohen Temperaturen kaum angegriffen. Organische Werkstoffe sind im allgemeinen nicht beständig.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Behavior of Materials upon Sulfuric AcidA survey of the behavior of metal and non metal materials upon sulfuric acid of various concentrations is given. This is followed by a discussion of the influence of different additives in the sulfuric acid upon the corrosion of metal materials. Organic and inorganic additives which derive from the production and the application of the sulfuric acid are treated. The behavior of sulfuric acid in its mixtures of reacting components are discussed also.
    Notes: Zunächst wird ein Überblick über das Verhalten von metallischen und nichtmetallischen Werkstoffen gegenüber Schwefelsäure verschiedener Konzentration gegeben. Dann wird auf den Einfluß eingegangen, den die verschiedenen Beimengungen in der Schwefelsäure auf die Korrosion metallischer Werkstoffe haben. Es werden nicht nur nur die anorganischen und organischen Beimengungen behandelt, die bei der Herstellung und Verwendung von Schwefelsäure entstehen, sondern auch das Verhalten von Schwefelsäure in Mischung mit Stoffen, die in Gegenwart von Schwefelsäure umgesetzt werden.

    Description / Table of Contents: The results of the corrosion tests of cathodically protected iron specimens in aired and not aired soils were published in article I. This paper is a report on further corrosion tests on cathodically protected iron specimens in soils which have been carried out to explain the influence of the soil water to soil air ratio. The corrosion of the protected specimens decreased when the soil had reached its water saturation limit as it should have been expected. On basis of these investigations you could get quantitative and reliable datas of the effectiveness of the cathodic protection on the corrosion of the cathodic protection on the corrosion of the protected metal in dependence of the soil water to soil air ratio which characterizes the aggressiveness of soils. The results of these investigations could be used also to put up general corrosion charts for materials to be protected by cathodic protection.
    Notes: Nachdem über die Ergebnisse der mit kathodisch geschützten Eisenproben in belüfteten und unbelüfteten Böden durchgeführten Korrosionsversuche bereits berichtet wurde (Mitteilung I), wird in der vorliegenden Arbeit über weitere Korrosionsversuche berichtet, die mit kathodisch geschütztem Eisen im Erdreich zur Klärung des Einflusses des W-Bd-Verhältnisses durchgeführt wurden. Wie zu erwarten war, wurde der Angriff der geschützten Probe verringert, wenn der Boden die Sättigungsgrenze an Wasser erreicht hatte. Auf Grund der durchgeführten Versuche können quantitative, zuverlässige Aussagen über die Wirkung des kathodischen Schutzes auf den Korrosionsablauf des geschützten Metalls in Abhängigkeit vom W-Bd-Verhältniswert, der für die Aggressivität des Bodens maßgebend ist, gemacht und zur Aufstellung allgemeiner Korrosionsschemen für einen kathodisch zu schützenden Werkstoff herangezogen werden.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Coefficient of Temperature and the Heat of Activation of the Corrosion-Reaction of Iron in SoilThe corrosion of soft iron in different soils can be described in dependance of the soil water to soil air ratio by means of the coefficients of temperature and the heats of activation of these corrosion reactions of the iron.The mean coeffizient of temperature in soils containing 20 per cent of water was about 1,92 and in water saturated soils it was about 1.7. The heats of activation of the corrosion of iron in water saturated soils (clay, loan, river sand, infusoria) amount to 9-10 kcal, in those containing 20 per cent of water 12-18 kcal.
    Notes: Es wird gezeigt, daß man die Korrosion von Weicheisen in verschiedenen Böden in Abhängigkeit vom „Bodenwasser-Boden-luft-Verhältniß an Hand der Temperatur-koeffizienten und Aktivierungsenergien der Korrosions-Reaktionen des Eisens verfolgen kann.Der mittlere Temperaturkoeffizient betrug in Böden mit einem Wassergehalt von 20% etwa 1,92 und in mit Wasser gesättigten Böden etwa, 1,7. Die AKtivierungsenergien der Eisenkorrosion in mit Wasser gesättigten Böden (Ton, Lehm, Flußsand, Infusoria) betrugen 9 bis 10 kcal und in solchen mit 20% Wasser 12 bis 18 kcal.

    Description / Table of Contents: Enameled AluminumThe USA and Great Britain have turned to enamel aluminum. New enamels had to be developed whose thermal expansion corresponds to that of aluminum and which can be fired at 660°C. Firstly rich in lead enamels were developed to obtain the required low softening point. Later on free from lead enamels could be produced by use of eutectic mixtures. The British „Alu glas“ enamels can be fired without any special preliminary treatment of the aluminum. Usually preliminary coppering or chrome-aluminum-oxide-coating are recommended. Enameled aluminum is not to displace the enameled iron but to substitute the hitherto processes of improving aluminum. Enameled aluminum is not qualified for dishes and cooking vessels. Sheets for wall covering, window frames, sing-boards, protective sheathings etc. are proposed for enamelling. These enamels must comply with various requirements so that their testing must-be extended on to many properties. Because of the low silica content of the Al-enamels no great resistance to acids may be expected. Enamels on aluminum are at any rate more durable than e.g. alkyd-amine coatings.
    Notes: In den USA und in England ist man dazu übergegangen, Aluminium zu emaillieren. Hierfür mußten neuartige Emails entwickelt werden, deren Wärmeausdehnung der des Aluminiums angepaßt ist und die bei 660°C eingebrannt werden können. Um diesen niedrigen Erweichungspunkt zu erreichen, wurden zuerst stark bleihaltige Emails entwickelt, später gelang es auch durch Verwendung eutektischer Mischungen bleifreie Emails herzustellen. Die englischen „Aluglas“ -Emails können ohne besondere Vorbehandlung des Al aufgeschmolzen werden. Im Übrigen wird eine vorherige Verkupferung oder Erzeugung einer Chrom-Aluminium-Oxydschicht empfohlen. Emailliertes Aluminium soll nicht das emaillierte Eisen ersetzen, sondern bisherige Veredelungsverfahren für Aluminium. Für Eß-,Koch- und Trinkgefäße ist emailliertes Aluminium nicht geeignet. Vorgeschlagen für das Emaillieren werden Platten zur Wandbekleidung, Fensterrahmen, Schilder, Schutzverkleidungen usw. Die Anforderungen an diese Emaillierungen sind mannigfaltig und die Prüfung der Emaillierung muß sich daher auch auf die verschiedensten Eigenschaften erstrecken. Infolge des geringen Kieselsäuregehaltes der Al-Emails ist nicht mit einer großen Säurebeständigkeit zu rechnen. Emaillierungen von Aluminium sind aber auf alle Fälle dauerhafter als z. B. Anstriche aus Alkyd-Amin.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion and Corrosion TestingBeginning with a general survey of the economical importance of the damage caused by corrosion the definition of corrosion is extended to materials like wood, stones, metals and plastics (without textiles) according to the meaning of the word.-Though much research on the protection of wood has been done no antifouling paint of sufficient quality could have been developed.-Natural stones are attacked vigorously by smoke gases, humidity, cold, nitrifying bacteria and so on.- The group of acid resisting cements, concrete and mortar has been enlarged b y the new cermets and the sprayed ceramics. - The crystal lattice constants and the quotients of volume are characterizing values for the behavior of metal in air. - Al alloyed with Be might prove good properties.- The corrosion of completely pure crystals of iron possessing an extraordinary high mechanical resistance is very low. - About 1050 German patents are referring to the protection of iron against corrosion. - The well known influences of the atmosphere and preparatory and protective measures are discussed. - Numerous special steels are a wonderful success of alloy techniques. - Finally a short report on plastics is followed by a survey of the testing methods. - A better and more intensive education of young specialists is of urgent necessity.
    Notes: Ausgehend von einem allgemeinen Überblick über die wirtschaftliche Bedeutung der Korrosionsverluste wird der Korrosionsbegriff, dem Wortsinn folgend, auf Holz, Gesteine bzw. Steine o.dgl., Metalle und Kunststoffe (ohne die Textiline) bezogen. Trotzdem auf dem Gebiete des Holzschutzes Erhebliches geleistet worden ist, fehlt z. B. ein wirklich ausreichender Antifoulinganstrich noch immer. Naturgestein wird durch Rauchgase, Feuchtigkeit, Frost, nitrifizierende Bakterien o. dgl. stark angegriffen. An die säurefesten Kitte, an die Zemente, Mörtel usw. haben sich neuerdings Cermets bzw. aufgespritzte Keramika angeschlossen. Für das Verhalten der Metalle an der Luft geben Gitterkonstanten and Volumenquotienten kennzeichnende Werte. Be in Al kann günstig wirken. Die Rostanfälligkeit von völlig reinen Eisenkristallen ist bei hervorragenden Festigkeitseigenschaften sehr gering. Rund 1050 deutsche Patente betreffen den Rostschutz des Eisens. Die bekannten Einwirkungen der Atmosphäre, die vorbereitenden und die Schutzmaßnahmen werden besprochen. Die Legierungstechnik hat mit zahlreichen Sonderstählen hervorragenden Erfolg gebracht. An eine kurze Würdigung der Kunststoffe schließt sich ein Überblick über die Untersuchungsmethoden. Die bessere und gründliche Vorbereitung der Nachwuchs-Fachkräfte ist dringend erforderlich.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Importance of the Disperse Phase in the Corrosion of Iron in SoilThe effect of the soil water to soil air ratio upon the spread of corrosion on vertical arranged partly immersed iron specimens was investigated in various soils. While inwater unsaturated soils the whole surface of the iron specimen is covered with corrosion products, the corrosion is limited to the areas near the waterline if the saturation limit of the soil is transgressed.The influence of the sludges upon the corrosion of iron in soils depends first of all on the size of the particles, the altitude of the sediment volume and the character of the electrolyte. An alteration of the of the distribution of dispersity e.g. by an increased number of particles or by coarsening causes a noticeable effect on the distribution of oxygen at those spots along the column of liquid where the sediments are suspended.
    Notes: Untersucht wurde der Einfluß des Verhältniswertes„Bodenwasser zu Bodenluft“ auf die Verteilung des Angriffes von senkrecht angeordneten, zum Teil eingetauchten Eisenproben in verschiedenen Böden. Während sich in einem an Wasser ungesättigten Boden die gesamte Eisenoberfläche mit Korrosionsprodukten bedeckt, beschränkt sich der Angriff, wenn die Sättigungsgrenze des Bodens an Wasser überschritten wird nur auf die in der Nähe der Wasserlinie liegenden Werkstoffpartien.Der Einfluß der Bodenschlämme auf die Eisenkorrosion im Boden hängt in erster Linie von der Größe der Teilchen, von der Höhe des Sedimentvolumens und von der Art des gelösten Elektrolyts ab. Die Änderung der Dispersitätsverteilung wei, Dispersitätsverteilung Gröberung oder -vermehrung übt einen merklichen Einfluß auf die Sauerstoffverteilung längs der Flüssigkeitssäule, an den Stellen an denen die Sedimente aufgeschlämmt sind, aus.
