Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of organic plastics, caused by perspiration of the skinPrompted by contact damage caused to technical utensils by perspiration of the skin, corrosion tests have been carried out with different organic plastics in different synthetic perspiration solutions frequently encountered. The tested materials, which belonged to different groups (plastics with synthetic resins through condensation; plastics with synthetic resins through polymerisation; cellulose and cellulose derivatives; casein products), showed considerable differences in their behaviour, not only in different perspiration solutions but also among each other, so that they can be divided into three resistance classes.

Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion behaviour of cast aluminium bronzesCast aluminium bronzes are cast alloys consisting of at least 70 pC copper, with aluminium as the principal alloying material. In the form of multi-alloy aluminium bronzes, they also contain iron, nickel, manganese and silicon. They are distinguished by a number of favourable properties, including a high corrosion resistance.Special, non-standard “Inoxyda” aluminium bronzes have been subjected to corrosion tests. The results show that the choice of the alloying materials must depend on the liquid media in contact with the materials. Fullest success in technical applications can only be attained if the metal becomes covered by a dense, adhesive and non- porous protective layer, depending on the material and liquid, respectively. Each individual case must therefore be carefully innvestigated.

Description / Table of Contents: The utilisation of the Warburg technique for corrosion testsThe corrosion rates of some metals have been measured manometrically by means of the so-called Warburg technique. It was found that it is possible, with this method, to ascertain the corrosion rate with remarkable accuracy by means of shorttime tests. Some observations are made concerning the behaviour of zinc in sodium chloride and ammonium chloride solutions. In either case, there is no hydrogen evolution but merely a consumption of oxygen. The oxygen consumption at the reaction in aerated common salt solution agrees with the loss of weight of the zinc specimens. In ammonium chloride, however, the oxygen consumption amounts to about three times the equivalent quantity of zinc dissolved. It is assumed that hydroxylamine hydrochloride is generated in the process.

Description / Table of Contents: Recent research on the passivity of metalsThe anodic dissolution and passivation of metals is discussed from the point of view of a competitive adsorption of activating and passivating anions. It is shown that the concentration and acidity conditions on the surface of the metal differ greatly from those inside the solution; with electrode-kinetic investigations, it is therefore incorrect to reckon with the concentrations or acidities encountered in the solution. It is also shown that, on the one hand, the surface structure or lattice plane may have a considerable influence on the anodic behaviour whilst, on the other hand, the surface structure itself may differ greatly, depending on the anode potential. It follows that a clear determination of the electrode kinetics of the anodic dissolution and passivation of metals is extremely difficult.

Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion effect of aqueous cement extractions on steelThe corrosion resistance of steel embedded in concrete is based On the fact that concrete, because of its calcium hydroxide content, has an alkaline reaction so that the steel is passivated. But since many simple electrolytes are apt to counteract passivity, and since concrete often contains gypsum, investigations have been carried out into the behaviour of steel in calcium hydroxide solutions containing calcium sulphate, These tests revealed a very high rate of local steel corrosion, amounting to a maximum of about 10 micrometres per day. The highly electropositive potential of steel in pure calcium hydroxide solutions is therefore, by addition of calcium sulphate, markedly shifted towards the negative side. The possible effects of such corrosion on the practical behaviour of steel in concrete are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Basic research on the problem of oxidation of metals in a fused salt bathThe results of recent research indicate that the oxidation of silver in molten sodium chloride is not exclusively governed by the presence of oxygen in the metall bath system. Another important factor is the reduction of sodium ions which entails the formation of silver ions, with the metallic sodium either being vaporized or forming an alloy with the silver. The rate of attack is also influenced by the temperature gradient in the bath, or at the surface exposed to the attack.

Description / Table of Contents: The influence of sulphur dioxide on the atmospheric corrosion of metalsThe paper provides a synopsis of present-day knowledge of the subject. In particular, the paper deals with the following aspects: - With zinc, nickel and cadmium, the atmospheric corrosion is roughly equivalent to the quantity of SO2 absorbed from the air, and sulphates are formed. Low air humidity reduces the absorption of SO2 and thus the corrosion of these metals. With iron, on the other hand, a simple mechanism causes the sulphur dioxide to have a catalytic effect, and oxides are fromed. A high relative humidity of the air promotes these process; a low humidity reduces them but does not affect the SO2 absorption. Due to the formation of protective layers containing sulphates, lead and copper have a particularly high weather resistance. The high weather resistance of aluminium is due to protective layers of aluminium oxides and their low capacity of absorbing SO2.

Description / Table of Contents: Electro-chemical characteristics of atmospheric corrosionOn the strength of published data, some essential characteristics of atmospheric corrosion are investigated, First, the part played by water adsorption is discussed and the influence on the emergence of corrosive electrolytes of impurities in the air and on the metal surface explained. On the basis of the electrode-kinetic conditions, the author then deals - especially for iron and steel, but with some comments on copper and zinc - with the mechanism and stages which govern the corrosion rate of uniform corrosion consisting of hydrogen segregation, oxygen reduction, and sulphur dioxide reduction. In connection with the question of non-uniform corrosion, especially of those metals affected by oxide films, the conditions for the appearance of the different types of differential aeration cells are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Comparing the results of electro-chemical corrosion testing methods with the practical performance of the materialsThe paper provides an extensive synopsis of present-day knowledge and experience on this subject, with detailed bibliographical notes. The questions as to what extent the results of electrochemical corrosion testing methods permit conclusions concerning the expected performance of the materials in practice is discussed from various aspects. After a description of the test methodology applied to the determination of the stability ranges (activity, passivity, immunity) which can be defined by electrode potentials, the author deals with a number of applications such as: cathodic and anodic corrosion protection, determination of pit corrosion proneness and stress corrosion proneness, electrokinetic tests of the effectiveness of surface treatments, protection criteria for corrosion inhibitors. Finally, some applications in the field of industrial routine testing are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Atmospheric corrosion of some important systems of base metals and metallic coatingsA corrosion process can be electrochemically represented if it is of  -  electrolytic type, i.e. if it 1takes place in an aqueous solution and2is accompanied by at least one cathodic reduction reaction. These conditions are present in the atmosphere. Depending on temperature and air humidity, the atmosphere contains up to 50 grams of water vapour pr. cubic metre which, under certain conditions, forms the aqueous solution, and it contains, as an oxidant, oxygen which supplies the cathodic reduction reaction. The atmospheric corrosion of a metal can thus be represented by an oxygen corrosion of the metallsolution system, with the aid of the electrochemical presentation of practical corrosion problems, it is possible to obtain data concerning of avoiding or corrosion as well as predictions of the corrosion performance to be expected.

Description / Table of Contents: Nonmetallic surface protection by enamel, rubber, plastics, and varnish coatingsIn the chemical and related industries the protection of production equipment against the attack by a number of more or less aggressive media and frequently aggravated by elevated temperatures and simultaneous mechanical stress is of utmost importance and requires considerable effort. In order to cope with the variety of problems encountered in this field the designer and engineer may choose the appropriate coating from among a considerable number of materials; some of them, and in particular the non-metallic coatings are discussed in this paper. At first they are subdivided according to the methods used for their application whereupon the author dwells upon the basic requirements a surface protection must meet within the scope discussed here; supporting evidence is cited in each case. Following that the limitations are outlined of the five main coating groups, in particular with a view to the temperature and to the chemical applications in the plant and construction are mentioned.A high degree of importance must be attributed to the correct construction of the objects to be Protected and to Proper manufacturing techniques, in particular with a view to welding. The detailed description of the individual measures of protection is concluded by an outlook upon the most recent and interesting development: in some compound materials the rigid base metal - formerly steel or cast iron  -  is being replaced by rein- forced plastics.

Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion behaviour of lead and lead alloys in sulphuric acid solutionsLong-time corrosion tests have been carried out in sulphuric acid solutions of different concentration (up to 70 per cent.) and at different temperatures (up to boiling point), using specimens of fine lead, copper fine lead and different types of hard lead. The only noticeable, and noticeably different, corrosion rates were encountered at temperatures above 100% c.In the medium 'and high concentration range, fine lead and, to a lesser extent, even copper fine lead were increasingly affected by corrosion; in agreement with published data, the corrosion values especially of fine lead showed a marked scatter and some of them were extremely high. Hard lead with 1.5 to 6 percent. antimony was less affected by the highly concentrated acids; but low-alloyed hard lead, showed, a maximum corrosion, rate in diluted acid. The comparatively highest resistance was shown by hard lead with 6 percent. antimony which showed noticeable corrosion under the influence of the strongest acid only (70 percent. H2SO4). A particularly high resistance in this acid was shown by a copper hard lead (0.6 percent antimony).Boiling tests on a minor technical scale with steel pots with homogeneous internal lead coating revealed a surprisingly high corrosion resistance of the lead coating, which consisted of copper lead, even in 70 percent acid heated to 150° C; such resistance was not to be expected from the preceding tests and exceeded that encountered with hard lead (6 percnt. SB) A chemical analysis showed that copper lead coating must, during manufacture, have absorbed tin, and subsequent tests showed that a small admixture of tin results in quite a considerable increase in the corrosion resistance of the copper lead. An increased copper content, too, had a favourable effect but only in the strongest acid. Finally, a number of tests were carried out in order to ascertain the influence, on the corrosion performance of some types of lead, of an admixture of nitric acid to the sulphuric acid (70 percent.). In all cases, the admixture had the effect of reducing the corrosion rate, especially with copper lead. The conclusions to be drawn from the test results in regard to corrosion tests and work practice are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of asbestos pipes by aggressive watersIn Bulgaria, asbestos pipes (made of Portland cement and chrysotil or amphibol asbestos, with calcium hydrosilicates, hydro-aluminates, hydro-ferrites and hydroxides as setting products) serve for the drainage of corrosive waters (rain, snow and mineral water). Depending on the constituent materials, and on the composition, temperature, pressure and exposure period o f the water, the type and degree of the corrosion effects vary. On the strength of experience gathered over many years from asbestos pipes installed in different places, the authors deal in some detail with the performance, in principle, of asbestos pipes exposed to soft water, hard water and mineral water.

Description / Table of Contents: New duroplastic coating materials for extreme thermal and chemical conditionsUp to now, the permeability to water vapour of organic coating materials such as duroplastics, thermoplastics and elastomers has given rise, within the condensation phase zone, to considerable destruction, beginning with more or less pronounced blister formation. The application of organic coating materials has therefore been confined to those spheres where nonaqueous media or a negative heat differential are encountered, i.e. where the temperature of the base material to be coated is higher than that of the aqueous medium on the coated side. If the heat differential is in the opposite direction, the water vapour will, because of the prevailing partial pressure, permeate the organic coating and irreversibly condense on the metal base.To eliminate these consequences and to obtain a permanent protection, the types named have been developed. These are absolutely proof to water vapour diffusion and remain, with any temperature differential, within their thermal capacity without causing damage in the form of blisters. In the present article, this development and the practical applications are described on the basis of results obtained in industrial practice.

Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion resistance of titanium in nitric acid of high temperaturesCorrosion tests showed that, in nitric acid of a concentration ranging from 20 to 70 percent. and at temperatures ranging from 190 to 230° C, titanium has a corrosion rate of between 1 and 10mm pr. annum. This high corrosion rate can be avoided if a substance containing silicon is added to the nitric acid.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of the lattice structure on the corrosion of an 18/10 chrome nickel steelAn 18/10 chrome nickel steel with low carbon content has been used for the examination of the corrosion-chemical behaviour of two phases with identical chemical composition but different lattice structure. Of the two structure components, austenite and martensite, the latter is subject to selective corrosion in the active zone. In the active/passive transition zone, in the passive zone, and in the transpassive zone, no difference in the behaviour of the two phases could be detected. The selective corrosion of the martensite may be ascribed to a shift in the anodic equilibrium potential of the metal dissolution and/or an increase in the exchange current density. It is likely that the high defect concentration of the martensite phase causes an increase in the exchange current density, thus favouring corrosion attack in the activation polarisation zone.

Description / Table of Contents: Metal spraying: From the gas burner to the plasma beamThe technology of metal spraying is simple; it is metallurgically interesting, and has an important effect on finishing. It permits the application of material in the form of variable coatings, for corrosion protection, for repair purposes, or for embellishment. Metals as well as nonmetallic materials can be used in wire or powder form by means of rhe gas burner, the electric arc or the plasma beam. In each case, special equipment is required. The capacity limits of these methods, which normally consist in the drop-by-drop application of a liquefied substance in a carrier gas, usually compressed air, to a prepared base, must be observed. With increasing scientific knowledge, these processes have found more widespread application, also aided by new sources of energy.

Description / Table of Contents: The weight constancy of rhodium and iridium bowls during analytical operationsFollowing a survey of literature on the use of rhodium and iridium devices for analytical and preparative purposes, a report is given on experience with bowls of these metals, roller-plated with platinum or unplated, for the following operations: annealing at 800 to 1000°C; boiling in concentrated nitric and hydrochloric acid; melting of potassium hydrogen sulphate at 400 to 600°C and of sodium and potassium carbonate at 8OO°C. In connection with the above-mentioned acids and with potassium hydrogen sulphate melts of 400°C, the unplated metals are more resistant than platinum. As expected, bowls made of rhodium or iridium rollerplated with platinum show the same high corrosion resistance as equipment made of normal platinum; but they retain their shape, even at high temperatures, better than the latter.

Description / Table of Contents: The differential etchin effect of hydrofluoric and hydrochloric acid on aluminiumWhilst the etching effect of hydrochloric acid on aluminium takes the form of pronounced surface roughness, that of hydrofluorid acid merely takes the form of a shallow erosion of metal; this phenomenon can be explained by two different reaction mechanisms:With hydrochloric acid, because of the anodic polarisation of the aluminium surface, the chlorine ions penetrate into weak zones of the oxide film, and the hydrogen ions are discharged at cathodic points (e.g. crystalline impurities in the aluminium surface). With hydrofluoric acid, on the other hand, the hydrogen ions penetrate the entire surface of the oxide film evenly, but the ion charges are exchanged without the intervention of cathodic points. This difference in the reaction mechanisms is ascribed to the lower penetration capacity o f the fluorine ion into the oxide film. In this connection, it is assumed that the fluorine ion is either, like un-dissociated hydrofluoric acid, present as a polymer, or that it possesses a larger hydrate shell than the chlorine ion.The different reaction mechanisms are discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion and acid resistant chromenickel steels with a maximum carbon content of 0.030% as a construction material for the chemical industryA report is given of studies concerning the structural stability and corrosion resistance of different austenitic corrosion and acid resistant steels, with special attention to their welding properties.Austenitic chrome-nickel steels tend to inter-crystalline corrosion after prolonged tempering at 500 to 700° C; such temperatures are encountered, inter alia, during welding.Steels with particularly low carbon content (maximum 0.030 pC, ELC steels) do not tend to inter-crystalline corrosion except after tempering periods exceeding ten hours, which do not occur during welding. Tic and NbC are not stable above 1200 to 1300°C so that, with stabilized steels, some very narrow zones along the weld will show a tendency to inter-crystalline corrosion, known as “knife edge attack”.For metallurgical reasons, the ELC steels have good weldability properties. Niobium-stabilised steels can be made brittle by niobides especially by those variants alloyed with molybdenum. Titanium-stabilised steels yield a comparatively viscous melt during welding, and may thus give rise to welding defects.ELC steels have a higher resistance to nitric acid than stabilised steelsThe mechanical strength o f ELC steels is somewhat lower than that of stabilised steels, but their strength can be improved by adding nitrogen. Some more recent varieties of ELC steels are discussed, together with examples of their application in the chemical industry.

Description / Table of Contents: Control measurements on cathodically protected pipelinesThe most important control measurement for the cathodic protection of buried pipelines is the measurement of the pipel soil potential. On the strength of experimental and theoretical investigations, it is possible to indicate safe protection potentials at which the corrosion rate becomes practically insignificant. In applying the scientific results of electro-chemistry to cathodic protection in practice, problems may be encountered if phenomena are over-simplified or if local conditions are not sufficiently taken into account.Such practical problems are not so much concerned with measuring instruments and reference electrodes; they are more associated with the measuring methods subsequently described and with the fact that influence factors difficult to ascertain must be taken into account. The cathodic polarisation at the metal surface to be protected is composed of overtensions of a penetration and a diffusion type. In addition, there occurs a resistance polarisation which may be governed, on the one hand, by the ohmic voltage drop between pipe surface and reference electrode and, on the other hand, by poorly conducting coating or insulating layers. The latter usually cause, at the same time, a change in the diffusion type overtension. Since the resistance polarisation does not partake in the reaction kinetics, this influence must be eliminated in measuring the protection potential. Since the different types of polarisation have different type curves, it is possible to ascertain the separate partial reactions in accordance with the normal methods of electro-chemistry. By means of oscillographic recordings of potential/time curves, through calculation or with the aid of suitable measuring bridges, it is possible to eliminate the resistance polarisation or to determine the ohmic voltage drop in the electrolyte.
