    Description / Table of Contents: The Development of Cylindrical Multilayered Hollow Bodies for High Internal Pressures and Their Special AdvantagesHollow steel bodies standing high internal pressures are required by different branches of industry for liquids, gases and vapors. The construction of hollow bodies to be used in the chemical industry must comply with extreme requirements concerning pressure, temperature, size, knowledge of the influences of aggressive chemical agents as well as an elastic operation of heating and cooling. The reviewed article surveys the development from the one part hollow bodies, produced e.g. in heavy forging machines, to the multiple part constructions especially the multilayered hollow bodies and their wrapping bodies which have gained an enormous importance. The problems of their stability and safety are solved. Multilayered constructions offer simple protection against corrosion by use of different materials for the in- and outside coatings.
    Notes: Stahl-Hohlkörper zur Aufnahme hoher Innendrücke werden in verschiedenen Industriezweigen für Flüssigkeiten, und Dämpfe benötigt. Bei den Hohlkörpern der Chemie sind Spitzenanforderungen zu erfüllen in bezug auf die Höhe der Drücke und Temperaturen und Größe der Körper, Beherrschung der Einwirkung von angreifenden chemischen Agenzien, sowie elastische Handhabung von Heizung und Kühlung. Der vorliegende Aufsatz schildert den Entwicklungsgang von einteiligen Hohlkörpern, die z. B. auf schweren Schmiedepressen hergestellt werden können, zur Mehrteilbauweise, insbesondere zu den aus mehreren Lagen geschichteten Hohlkörpern, wobei der Wickelkörper überragende Bedeutung gewann. Die Probleme der Festigkeit und Sicherheit werden vollkommen beherrscht; darüber hinaus bietet die Mehrschichtbauweise durch Wahl verschiedener Werkstoffe für Innenschicht und äußere Lagen eine einfache und wirtschaftliche Möglichkeit des Korrosionsschutzes.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Coefficient of Temperature and the Heat of Activation of the Corrosion-Reaction of Iron in SoilThe corrosion of soft iron in different soils can be described in dependance of the soil water to soil air ratio by means of the coefficients of temperature and the heats of activation of these corrosion reactions of the iron.The mean coeffizient of temperature in soils containing 20 per cent of water was about 1,92 and in water saturated soils it was about 1.7. The heats of activation of the corrosion of iron in water saturated soils (clay, loan, river sand, infusoria) amount to 9-10 kcal, in those containing 20 per cent of water 12-18 kcal.
    Notes: Es wird gezeigt, daß man die Korrosion von Weicheisen in verschiedenen Böden in Abhängigkeit vom „Bodenwasser-Boden-luft-Verhältniß an Hand der Temperatur-koeffizienten und Aktivierungsenergien der Korrosions-Reaktionen des Eisens verfolgen kann.Der mittlere Temperaturkoeffizient betrug in Böden mit einem Wassergehalt von 20% etwa 1,92 und in mit Wasser gesättigten Böden etwa, 1,7. Die AKtivierungsenergien der Eisenkorrosion in mit Wasser gesättigten Böden (Ton, Lehm, Flußsand, Infusoria) betrugen 9 bis 10 kcal und in solchen mit 20% Wasser 12 bis 18 kcal.

    Description / Table of Contents: Installation and Welding of Plastic PipesPipes made of thermoplastic materials are weldable only. Hard-polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene are used as materials for pipes at a large scale in the chemical industries as well as in fresh water supplying and draining. The working and installation of these piping materials and several methods of fitting are discussed and some new but approved techniques reported.
    Notes: Schweißbar sind nur Rohre aus thermoplastischen Kunststoffen. Vor allem Polyvinylchlorid-hart und Polyäthylen sind als Rohrwerkstoffe in großem Umfang in der chemischen Industrie, aber auch in der Frischwasserversorgung und für Wasserabfuhr eingesetzt. Die Verarbeitung und Verlegung dieser Rohrmaterialien wird besprochen, verschiedene Verbindungsverfahren werden kritisch betrachtet, und es werden neuere, jedoch bereits bewährte Verfahren aufgezeigt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Flame Sprayed Non Metal CoatingsThe article contains an extensively complete survey of the protection against corrosion and wear of metallic materials by flame sprayed non metal, especially plastic, coatings. In the first section various spraying devices are compared critically and the modern methods of spraying are discussed in detail. This is followed by a discourse about the customary kinds of plastics, - their advantages and disadvantages and the properties required of injection molded products.The preparation of the surface which requires special measures just like the spraying procedure itself is described in detail. Finally some examples taken from practice show where flame spraying of non metal coatings and protective covers has proved to be good or not good.
    Notes: Die Abhandlung gibt einen weitgehend vollständigen Überblick über den Korrosions- und Verschleißschutz metallischer Werkstoffe durch flammgespritzte nichtmetallische, insbesondere Kunststoff-Überzüge. Im ersten Teil werden die verschiedenen Spritzgerätekonstruktionen einander kritisch gegenübergestellt und die derzeitigen Spritzverfahren ausführlich behandelt. Sodann werden die nach dem gegenwärtigen Stande des Flammspritzens gebräuchlichen Kunststoffe unter Darlegung ihrer besonderen Vor- und Nachteile und die an den Spritzguß zu stellenden Anforderungen behandelt. Die Haftgrundvorbereitung, die ebenso wie der Spritzvorgang selbst spezielle Maßnahmen erfordert, werden im einzelnen ausführlich beschrieben. Abschließend zeigen Beispiele aus der Praxis in Wort und Bild, an welchen Stellen sich das Flammspritzen nichtmetallischer Überzüge und Schutzschichten bewährt oder nicht bewährt hat.

    Description / Table of Contents: Overvoltage Effects on Bimetallic ElectrodesAfter a determination of the hydrogen overvoltages, on mercury, zinc, lead, cadmium, nickel and platinised platinium in acetate buffer solutions the hydrogen overvoltages of bimetallic electrodes as zinc - copper, lead - copper and lead - platinised platinium were investigated under varying surface conditions. For the first and the second systems mentioned the overvoltages are different from those of the pure metals while lead almost assumes the potential of the platinised platinium.The alteration of overvoltages on bimetallic electrodes can be discerned quantitatively from the inhomogeneous current intensity distribution whereby it becomes evident that the metal of the lower overvoltage attracts more current density lines. Differences in potential between the centre and the boundary of the electrode metals as well as temporal effects might disturb the simple current intensity distribution expected.
    Notes: Die Wasserstoff-Überspannungen an Quecksilber, Zink, Blei, Cadmium, Nickel und platiniertem Platin in Acetat-Pufferlösungen wurden bestimmt. Dann wurden die Überspannungen des Wasserstoffs an bimetallischen Elektroden: Zink-Kupfer, Blei-Kupfer und Blei-platiniertes Platin mit verschiedenen Oberflächenverhältnissen untersucht. In den beiden erstgenannten Systemen sind die Überspannungen verschieden von denen der reinen Metalle, während das Blei fast das Potential des Platins annimmt.Die Änderungen der Überspannung in bimetallischen Elektroden lassen sich quantitativ durch die ungleichmäßige Stromstärkeverteilung erklären, wobei sich zeigt, daß das Metall mit der kleineren Überspannung mehr Stromlinien auf sich zieht. Potentialdifferenzen zwischen Zentrum und Begrenzung der Elektrodenmetalle sowie Zeiterscheinungen in der Potentialausbildung können die einfache, zu erwartende Stromstärkeverteilung stören.

    Description / Table of Contents: Studies on the Corrosion of IronThere are two different modifications of iron oxides. The first is ferromagnetic having p-structure while the second is paramagnetic and has a α-structure. The formation of p-iron rust takes place in moist air. α-iron rust is formed by aqueous solutions of strong oxidising reagents or by organic agents. The magnetic behavior of the iron oxides allows to reconstruct the conditions of their formation. The results of the magnetic test comply with those of the X-ray fine structure investigations.
    Notes: Eisenoxyde existieren in zwei verschiedenen Modifikationen, einer ferromagnetischen mit γ-Struktur und einer paramagnetischen mit α-Struktur. Zur Bildung von γ-Eisenrost kommt es in feuchter Luft, zu der von α-Eisenrost in Wasser mit starken Oxydationsmitteln oder in organischen Mitteln. Das magnetische Verhalten der Eisenoxyde läßt auf die Art der Rostbildung zurückschließen. Das Ergebnis der Magnetprüfung deckt sich mit dem von Röntgen-Feinstruktur-Untersuchungen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Oxidation of TitanumIt was attempted to explain the time equations which have been found by different authors. There is a significant connection between the time equations of the different ranges of temperature and times of oxidation. Below 300° C where oxidation follows a logarithmic time equation no solubility of oxygen in titanium during the oxidation could be observed. Above this temperature absorption of oxygen becomes noticeable. In this range of temperature a transition from the logarithmic over a cubic to a parabolic time equation is observed. Above 700° C after longer times of oxidation cracking of the tinder coat must be expected.
    Notes: Es wird der Versuch unternommen, die von den einzelnen Autoren gefundenen Zeitgesetze zu deuten. Die in den verschiedenen Temperaturbereichen und Oxydationszeiten beobachteten Zeitgesetze stehen in einem sinnvollen Zusammenhang. Unterhalb 300° C, wo das logarithmische Zeitgesetz der Oxydation herrscht, ist eine nennenswerte Sauerstofflöslichkeit im Titan während der Oxydation nicht zu beobachten. Erst oberhalb dieser Temperatur wird die Sauerstoffaufnahme durch Titan beachtlich. In diesem Temperaturbereich wird ein Übergang zunächst in das kubische und anschließend in das parabolische Zeitgesetz gefunden. Oberhalb 700° C ist ferner nach längeren Oxydationszeiten mit einem Aufreißen der Zunderschicht zu rechnen.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Chemical Reactions of Tin and their Effects upon Tin Plate CansThe behavior of tin and tin plate under atmospheric conditions and the problems of the corrosion of the outside coat of tin plate cans are discussed. some measures to prevent this corrosion are given. The effects of acids as well as of sour foods upon tin and tin plate were investigated. Pitting, hydrogen swell and polarity change of the system tin-iron by the formation of complex tin salts are treated. In the same way the different effects of alkaline substances are described. sulfide discolorations by sulfide containing or sulfide forming substances as well as a number of neutral agents which react upon tin plate are discussed. at the end some relation between corrosion effects and the quality of steel sheets, the tinning and the lacquering of tin plate cans are indicated.
    Notes: Behandelt wird das Verhalten von Zinn und Weißblech unter atmosphärischen Einflüssen. Daran anknüpfend wird das Problem der Außenkorrosion von Weißblechdosen erörtert und Ratschläge zu ihrer Verhinderung gegeben. Die Wirkung von Säuren sowie von sauren Konservierungsgütern auf Zinn und Weißblech wird eingebend untersucht. Lochfraß, Wasserstoffbombage und Umkehr der Polarität des Zinn-Eisensystems durch Zinnkomplexbildner werden behandelt. Desgleichen werden die verschiedenen Korrosionserscheinungen durch alkalisch wirkende Substanzen dargestellt. Sulfidverfärbungen durch sulfide enthaltende oder Sulfid abspaltende Stoffe werden unter den verschiedensten Bedingungen besprochen; desgleichen eine Reihe von neutralen Stoffen, die Weißblech angreifen können. Abschließend werden einige Hinweise über Stablblechqualität, Verzinnungsart und Lackierung von Weißblechdosen in Bezug auf Korrosionserscheinungen gegeben.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Importance of the Disperse Phase in the Corrosion of Iron in SoilThe effect of the soil water to soil air ratio upon the spread of corrosion on vertical arranged partly immersed iron specimens was investigated in various soils. While inwater unsaturated soils the whole surface of the iron specimen is covered with corrosion products, the corrosion is limited to the areas near the waterline if the saturation limit of the soil is transgressed.The influence of the sludges upon the corrosion of iron in soils depends first of all on the size of the particles, the altitude of the sediment volume and the character of the electrolyte. An alteration of the of the distribution of dispersity e.g. by an increased number of particles or by coarsening causes a noticeable effect on the distribution of oxygen at those spots along the column of liquid where the sediments are suspended.
    Notes: Untersucht wurde der Einfluß des Verhältniswertes„Bodenwasser zu Bodenluft“ auf die Verteilung des Angriffes von senkrecht angeordneten, zum Teil eingetauchten Eisenproben in verschiedenen Böden. Während sich in einem an Wasser ungesättigten Boden die gesamte Eisenoberfläche mit Korrosionsprodukten bedeckt, beschränkt sich der Angriff, wenn die Sättigungsgrenze des Bodens an Wasser überschritten wird nur auf die in der Nähe der Wasserlinie liegenden Werkstoffpartien.Der Einfluß der Bodenschlämme auf die Eisenkorrosion im Boden hängt in erster Linie von der Größe der Teilchen, von der Höhe des Sedimentvolumens und von der Art des gelösten Elektrolyts ab. Die Änderung der Dispersitätsverteilung wei, Dispersitätsverteilung Gröberung oder -vermehrung übt einen merklichen Einfluß auf die Sauerstoffverteilung längs der Flüssigkeitssäule, an den Stellen an denen die Sedimente aufgeschlämmt sind, aus.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Cathodic Protection in Soils by the Galvanic Method IThe electrode processes on short circuited electrodes of iron and zinc respectively magnesium being immersed into aired and not aired soils are described. According to the degree of saturation of water of the soil an increased velocity of solution of the iron to be protected could be observed in water unsaturated soils. If the saturation limit of the soil is transgressed a decreased velocity of solution of the iron to be protected could be expected. The periodical changes of the water saturation of the soil causes an noticeable effect on the corrosion of the iron to be protected. The rate of Corrosion is proportional to the sum of the duration of the periods if the soil is water unsaturated.
    Notes: Es werden die Elektrodenvorgänge an Eisen und Zink bzw. Magnesium, die in einem belüfteten und unbelüfteten Boden eingetaucht und miteinander kurzgeschlossen sind, beschrieben. Je nach dem Sättigungszustand des Bodens an Wasser läßt sich eine größere Auflösungsgeschwindigkeit des zu schützenden Eisens in einem an Wasser ungesättigten Boden beobachten. Wird die Sättigungsgrenze des Bodens überschritten, ist mit einem verminderten Inlösungsgehen des zu schützenden Eisens zu rechnen. Der periodische Austausch der Sättigung des Bodens an Wasser übt einen merklichen Einfluß auf die Korrosion des zu schützenden Eisens aus; die Korrosion des Eisens ist proportional der Summe der Länge der Perioden, wenn der Boden an Wasser ungesättigt ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: Enameled AluminumThe USA and Great Britain have turned to enamel aluminum. New enamels had to be developed whose thermal expansion corresponds to that of aluminum and which can be fired at 660°C. Firstly rich in lead enamels were developed to obtain the required low softening point. Later on free from lead enamels could be produced by use of eutectic mixtures. The British „Alu glas“ enamels can be fired without any special preliminary treatment of the aluminum. Usually preliminary coppering or chrome-aluminum-oxide-coating are recommended. Enameled aluminum is not to displace the enameled iron but to substitute the hitherto processes of improving aluminum. Enameled aluminum is not qualified for dishes and cooking vessels. Sheets for wall covering, window frames, sing-boards, protective sheathings etc. are proposed for enamelling. These enamels must comply with various requirements so that their testing must-be extended on to many properties. Because of the low silica content of the Al-enamels no great resistance to acids may be expected. Enamels on aluminum are at any rate more durable than e.g. alkyd-amine coatings.
    Notes: In den USA und in England ist man dazu übergegangen, Aluminium zu emaillieren. Hierfür mußten neuartige Emails entwickelt werden, deren Wärmeausdehnung der des Aluminiums angepaßt ist und die bei 660°C eingebrannt werden können. Um diesen niedrigen Erweichungspunkt zu erreichen, wurden zuerst stark bleihaltige Emails entwickelt, später gelang es auch durch Verwendung eutektischer Mischungen bleifreie Emails herzustellen. Die englischen „Aluglas“ -Emails können ohne besondere Vorbehandlung des Al aufgeschmolzen werden. Im Übrigen wird eine vorherige Verkupferung oder Erzeugung einer Chrom-Aluminium-Oxydschicht empfohlen. Emailliertes Aluminium soll nicht das emaillierte Eisen ersetzen, sondern bisherige Veredelungsverfahren für Aluminium. Für Eß-,Koch- und Trinkgefäße ist emailliertes Aluminium nicht geeignet. Vorgeschlagen für das Emaillieren werden Platten zur Wandbekleidung, Fensterrahmen, Schilder, Schutzverkleidungen usw. Die Anforderungen an diese Emaillierungen sind mannigfaltig und die Prüfung der Emaillierung muß sich daher auch auf die verschiedensten Eigenschaften erstrecken. Infolge des geringen Kieselsäuregehaltes der Al-Emails ist nicht mit einer großen Säurebeständigkeit zu rechnen. Emaillierungen von Aluminium sind aber auf alle Fälle dauerhafter als z. B. Anstriche aus Alkyd-Amin.

    Description / Table of Contents: Synthetic Organic Materials in Food IndustryBecause of their favorable corrosive behavior the synthetic materials of organic nature, the so called plastics, are gaining increasing use for the construction of containers and pipelines as well as for packing in food industry. In contrary to the metals the corrosion of plastics is not a pure surface phenomenon as it is influenced by diffusion as well as by penetration effects. The complicated composition of most victuals suggests to judge the possibilities of use of plastics not only by their behavior upon the most important chemical agents but by the reactions taking place between the plastic and the food concerned in its original composition. The results o f such series of tests which have been carried out to a great extent in the institute are represented in chart form.
    Notes: Infolge ihres günstigen Korrosionsverhaltens finden die künstlichen Werkstoffe organischer Natur, die sogenannten Plaste oder Kunststoffe, steigende Verwendung beim Bau von Behältern und Rohrleitungen sowie als Verpackungsmaterialien in der Lebensmittelindustrie. Im Gegensatz zu den Metallen ist jedoch hier der ablaufende Korrosionsvorgang keine reine Oberflächenerscheinung, sondern er wird durch Diffusions- und Penetrationserscheinungen beeinflußt.Die komplexe Zusammensetzung der meisten Lebensmittel läßt es geraten erscheinen, sich bei der Beuteilung der Einsatzmöglichkeiten nicht auf das Verhalten gegenüber den wichtigsten chemischen Agenzien zu beschränken, sondern vielmehr die Veränderungen im Kontakt mit den betreffenden Lebensmitteln in der originalen Zusammensetzung zu registrieren. Eine Tabelle gibt die Resultate solcher Versuchsreihen, die zum großen Teil im Institut für Kunststoffe durchgeführt wurden, wieder.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Problem of the Inter-Crystal-line Corrosion as well as the Corrosion under Tension of Homogeneous Copper-Gold and Copper-Zinc und of Precipitable Aluminum-Zinc-Magnesium Mixed CrystalsMixed crystal specimens of gold and copper-with a content of 10-90 per cent by atomic weight of gold - as well as of copper and zinc - with a content of 63-80 per cent by weight of copper were made. After they had been kept for certain times under mercury their tensile strength was determined to investigate the conditions under which the tensile corrosion of homogeneous mixed crystals occurs and to find a theory of the formation of cracks. If the tensile test is carried out in the presence of mercury you could observe a big decrease of tensile strength. Its amount depends on the concentration of mixed crystals and has a maximum at 50 per cent by atomic weight. The same effect could be produced also by chemical agents. But in this case the effect is limited to the not noble side of the mixed crystal system. As this decrease of tensile strength does not take place with pure metals one might think that the grainboundaries of mixed crystals systems have an increased reactivity which must be considered to produce the sensitivity to corrosion under tensile strength. The formation of cracks during corrosion processes under tensile strength could be explained by the fact that the corrosive agents reacts more intensely upon deformed materials as their reactivity under deformation will be much higher.
    Notes: Um die Bedingungen, unter denen Spannungskorrosion an homogenen Mischkristallen auftritt, zu ermitteln und einen Mechanismus der Rißbildung zu entwickeln, wird von Gold-Kupfer-Mischkristallproben mit 10 bis 90 At.-% Gold und Kupfer-Zink-Mischkristallproben mit 63 bis 90 Gew.-% Kupfer, nachdem sie verschieden lange unter Quecksilber gelagert worden sind, die Zugfestigkeit bestimmt. Erfolgt dabei der Zugversuch unter Anwesenheit des Quecksilbers, so beobachtet man einen hohen Festigkeits-abfall, der von der Mischkristallkonzentration abhängt und bei 50 At.-% am größten ist. Der gleiche Effekt wird auch von chemischen Agenzien ausgelöst, doch beschränkt er sich hier auf die unedle Seite des Mischkristallsystems. Da an reinen Metallen dieser Festigkeitsabfall nicht auftritt, wird auf eine erhöhte Reaktionsfähigkeit der Mischkristallkorngrenze geschlossen, die als Ursache der Spannungskorrosionsempfindlichkeit anzusehen ist. Die bei der Spannungskorrosion auftretende Rißbildung ist dabei darauf zurückzuführen, daß das Korrosionsmittel stets mit einem sich plastisch verformenden Material reagiert, dessen Reaktionsfähigkeit während des Verformungsvorganges stark erhöht ist.
