Abstract Tetraethyl lead and tetraethyl tin were prepared by electrolysing DMF solutions of ethyliodide and ethylbromide in an undivided cell using a zinc cathode and a lead or tin anode. The process involves the cathodic production, probably by a catalytic mechanism, of ethyl zinc compounds which may then react at the anode to form the product. The most favourable feature of the process is the low electrical resistance of the cell, which allows the attainment of a high current density with a very low potential difference applied. The nature and concentration of the ethylhalide used are the main parameters which affect tetraethyl lead and tetraethyl tin formation.
