Upon electron-impact aryl methyl sulphones (I) rearranged to form aryl-oxygen bonds. The mode of fragmentation of the intermediate ester (II) to give [aryl O]+ or [aryl OH]+ ions was found to be markedly influenced by the nature of the aryl substituent.
