Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the corrosion of aluminiumThe basic features of the corrosion behaviour of aluminum in contact with aqueous alkaline to slightly acid solutions of sodium chloride and sodium sulphate are summarized with the aid of electro-chemical measurements. In this connection, the following aspects are discussed in some greater detail: Mechanism of uniform dissolution, and its dependence on the pH value; catholic corrosion and cathodic protection; mechanism and inhibition of pit corrosion in alkaline halogenide solutions; calculation and measurement of the rest potential as a function of the pH value; contact corrosion. It is shown that, over the entire pH range normally encountered, those aspects of the electrode behaviour which are of special interest from a corrosion point of view can be consistently interpreted from the behaviour and properties of the oxide or hydroxide covering layer.
