Notes:
The morphology of the dorsal proctodeal gland of the mature male turkey closely resembles that of the proctodeal gland of the mature female Japanese quail. This exocrine gland is a collection of compound, coiled, tubular units. Diffuse lymphoid tissue and germinal centers are distributed throughout the lamina propria and are closely associated with the surface and glandular epithelia. The morphology and histochemistry of the proctodeal gland mucosa suggest that it may secrete muco-substance(s) and may have immunogenic capabilities.
