On the Question of the Barker-Bourne Rules2.3;4.5-Di-O-benzylidenegalactitol (2a, b) and 2.3;4.5-di-O-isopropylidenegalactitol (3) react with benzaldehyde and zinc chloride with formation of 1·3;2.4;5.6-tri-O-benzylidene galactitol (1). With regard to newest results on the conformation of the hexitols8-10) the reaction to 1 is compared with the benzylidenation of D-glucitol under kinetic23) and thermodynamic20) control. The hypothesis is stated that the rules of Barker und Bourne1,12) are valid only if the acetalisation of alditols is performed under kinetic control.

2.3;4.5-Di-O-benzyliden-galaktit (2a, b) und 2.3;4.5-Di-O-isopropyliden-galaktit (3) reagieren mit Benzaldehyd/Zinkchlorid zu 1·3;2.4;5.6-Tri-O-benzyliden-galaktit (1). Die Reaktion zu 1 wird unter Berücksichtigung neuester Ergebnisse über die Konformationen der Hexite8-10) mit der Benzalierung von D-Glucit unter kinetischer23) und thermodynamischer Produktbestimmung20) verglichen. Hieraus wird die Hypothese abgeleitet, daß die Regeln von Barker und Bourne1,12) nur gültig sind, sofern die Acetalisierung von Alditen unter thermodynamisch determinierten Bedingungen verläuft.
