Heterosiloxane Chemistry. Spectroscopic and Magnetic Studies on Mono- and Binuclear Iron-siloxanesA weak antiferromagnetic metal-metal interaction was found by magnetic measurements in the dimeric tris(trialkylsiloxy)iron(III) spices 1 and 2. The exchange integral was determined to be J = -8.5 cm-1 for 1. The mononuclear reference compounds 3 and 4 show a simple spin-only value of 5.92 B. M. 1 and the analogous aluminium-siloxane 5 are in equilibrium with a mixed dinuclear compounds 6 (eq. (2)); however, with Δ G = +2.3 Kcal/mole the symmetrical dinuclear siloxanes are favoured. According to the electronic spectra the colour of the iron-siloxanes has its origin in a strong charge-transfer band. The spin-forbidden d5-transitions of iron in the unusual tetrahedral oxygen environment are only of very low intensity.
Notes:
