Synthesis and Properties of Semisquaric Acid and its Alkaline Salts (Moniliformin)The preparation of semisquaric acid (2) via a photochemical [2 + 2]-cycloaddition of chlorovinylene carbonate (18) and subsequent hydrolysis of the stereoisomeric cycloadducts 7a and 7b is successful. 2 is a very strong acid of pKa = 0.88. Reaction with amines gives the amides (24, 26), with diazomethane the methyl ester (25). The K and Na semisquarates are prepared. They have been detected as mycotoxins in microorganisms and are designated as “moniliformin”. - The hydrolysis of the [2 + 2]-cycloadducts 5a and 5b or 6a and 6b, formed from dichlorovinylene carbonate (10) and 1,3-dioxole (8) or 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole (9), yields the derivatives 13 or 14 of 1,2,3-trihydroxy-1-cyclopropanecarboxylic acid by ring contraction. Thus, 2 cannot be obtained by this route.
Notes:
