Description / Table of Contents:
Electrochemical Oxidation of AcridansThe synthesis of 10,10′-dimethyl-9,9′-spirobiacridan (2) is described and the electrochemical oxidation of this compound and other 9,9-disubstituted acridans (9,9-dimethylacridan (1c), 9,9,10-trimethylacridan (1d), 9,9-diphenylacridan (1e), 10-methyl-9,9-diphenylacridan (1f)) in acetonitrile is investigated. The results from cyclic voltammetry, controlled potential electrolysis, and independent synthesis show that the oxidation of all these compounds to the monocation radical (reversible one-electron process) is followed by dimerization together with proton abstraction to 2,2′-biacridan systems (9, 14), which are easily further oxidized. The oxidation of 9H-acridans, however, leads to acridinium systems (7a, b), as illustrated for acridan (1a) and 10-methyl-acridan (1b). - The course of oxidation is compared with that described for other di- and triarylamines; quantitative differences are interpreted.
Notes:
