Formation of the cis,cis,cis,trans-[9]Annulene AnionThe reaction of 9-anti-methoxy- or 9-anti-chloro-cis-bicyclo[6.1.0]nona-2,4,6-triene (1a or 1b) with lithium, sodium, or potassium in tetrahydrofurane at -30 to -20°C leads stereoselectively (〉97% in the case of 1a) to the aromatic cis,cis,cis,trans-[9]annulene anion (4), which can be isolated in the form of crystalline salts. 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and protonation reveal the structure of 4. Former investigations of the same reaction1,2) resulted in the observation of the thermodynamically more stable all-cis-[9]annulene anion (3). From the isomeric 9-syn-methoxy- and 9-syn-chloro-cis-bicyclo[6.1.0]nona-2,4,6-trienes (2a and 2b), on the other hand, the all-cis-anion 3 is formed directly. 9-syn-lithio- and 9-anti-lithio-cis-bicyclo-[6.1.0]nona-2,4,6-trienes (2d and 1d) are not intermediates in the formation of 3 and 4. Presumably, electron transfer reaction to give bicyclo[6.1.0]nonatriene anion radicals followed by stereoselective ring opening of these species are responsible for the course of these reactions.
Notes:
9-syn-Chlor-cis-bicyclo[6.1.0]nona-2,4,6-trienen (2a bzw.
