Notes:
Human plasma or serum is desalted completely by passing through a column containing a suitable mixture of an anion exchanger (OH-cycle) and a cation exchanger (H+ cycle). At the resulting very low ionic strength and pH 5.2 part of the globulins is precipitated. The solution is neutralized. A stabilizer such as sodium caprylate and glucose if necessary to make an isotonic solution are added. Then the solution is filtered through a bacterial filter into the final containers. It can be pasteurized for 10 hours at 60° C without clotting, a treatment known to kill the homologous serum hepatitis virus which is frequently present in pooled plasma.
