The influence of non-polar and polar solvents on the infrared absorption band of the carbonyl group in three tetrasubstituted ureas has been studied. It is shown that for non-polar solvents the correlation of frequency shifts with solvent dielectric constant differs significantly from that for polar solvents. From comparison with the KIRKWOOD-MAGAT-BAUER theory it is concluded that microscopic effects dominate the observed frequency shifts especially in the case of non-polar solvents, although that theory roughly agrees with observations. General rules seem to exist for the correlation of frequency shifts with dielectric constants. The influence of solvent on apparent half width is also discussed.
