The solvent dependence of the frequencies of infrared absorption bands in the 1700-1600 cm-l region is used to identify the carbonyl stretching band of certain tropones. For tropone, 4,5-benzotropone and 4,5-(2′,3′-naphtho)-tropone the carbonyl stretching band is found to lie at lower frequencies (ca. 1600 cm-1) than the carbon-carbon stretching frequencies. It is confirmed that whereas for 2,7-polymethylene-4,5-benzotropones the carbon-carbon stretching frequency lies at ca. 1620 cm-l, the carbonyl frequency decreases from ca. 1700 to ca. 1600 cm-l as the polymethylene chain increases in length, and occurs below the former for compounds with more than nine methylene groups.
