By reaction of phenyl lithium with chromium trichloride mainly an addition compound, 3 LiC6H5 · Cr(C6H5)3 · 2,5 C4H10O, is formed. The most important component of this product, triphenyl chromium, is the first real organochromium compound. The Cr(C6H5)3-component is completely hydrolysed by water and its derivates. Reaction with O2 or J2 yields also diphenyl. Li3Cr(C6H5)6, totally free from ether can be prepared by dissolving the addition compound in benzene and allowing to crystallyze; its paramagnetism is of the same magnitude as that of the free Cr+++ ion. Solutions of Li3Cr(C6H5)6 absorb molecular hydrogen at normal conditions.

Es konnte festgestellt werden, daß die Reaktion von Lithiumphenyl mit Chromchlorid überwiegend ein Addukt der Formel 3 LiC6H5 · Cr(C6H5)3 · 2,5 C4H10O liefert, das als maßgeblichen Bestandteil eine echte Chrom-organo-Verbindung im klassischen Sinn, nämlich das eigentliche Triphenylchrom, enthält. Die Isolierung ist allerdings nur bei sorgfältiger Fernhaltung von Sauerstoff und Feuchtigkeit durchführbar. Wasser und wasserähnliche Agentien bewirken Totalhydrolyse, wobei alle C6H5-Gruppen in Benzol übergehen, während die Umsetzung mit Sauerstoff und Jod auch Diphenyl liefert. Der Solvatäther kann thermisch fast vollständig, durch Umlösen aus Benzol restlos entfernt werden. Das Chrom besitzt in dieser Verbindung praktisch den gleichen Paramagnetismus wie das Cr+++-Ion. Sehr auffällig ist die Fähigkeit des Li3Cr(C6H5)6, in seinen Lösungen unter Normalbedingungen molekularen Wasserstoff zu absorbieren.
