By reaction between phosphorus oxychloride and phosphorus(V) oxyde at a temperature of 200° C, a mixture has been obtained containing unchanged POCl3, pyrophosphoryl chloride, P2O3Cl4, trimetaphosphoryl chloride, P3O6Cl3, and small amounts of polyphosphoryl chlorides, PnO2n-1Cln+2, with n = 4-6.Pure pyrophosphoryl chloride can be isolated from this mixture by fractional distillation in a yield of about 30 per cent.

Bei der Einwirkung von Phosphoroxychlorid auf Phosphor(V)-oxyd bei 200° im Einschlußrohr entsteht ein Gemisch von kondensierten Phosphorylchloriden, das neben Phosphoroxychlorid vorwiegend Pyrophosphorylchlorid (P2O3Cl4), Trimetaphosphorylchlorid (P3O6Cl3) und kleine Mengen von Polyphosphorylchloriden PnO2n-1Cln+2 mit Kettenlängen n = 4-6 enthält.Aus dem Gemisch der kondensierten Phosphorylchloride läßt sich durch fraktionierte Destillation das Pyrophosphorylchlorid in besserer Ausbeute (∼30%) und größerer Reinheit isolieren, als dies nach den für das Pyrophosphorylchlorid bisher bekannten Darstellungsverfahren möglich war.
