The symmetry of D3 h of the trimetaphosphate ion dissolved in H2O or D2O is confirmed by investigation of the infrared spectrum. RAMAN frequencies of crystalline Na3P3O9 · 6 H2O, combined with data from the infrared spectrum and X-ray analysis, show a symmetry of C3 v for the P3O9-ion in the lattice.

Die Symmetrie D3 h für das Trimetaphosphation in wäßriger Lösung wird durch Infrarotuntersuchung in H2O und D2O bestätigt, einige frühere Zuordnungen werden richtiggestellt.RAMAN-Aufnahmen an kristallisiertem Na3P3O9 · 6 H2O zeigen eine verminderte Symmetrie im festen Zustand an. Es werden die Infrarotspektren herangezogen und unter Verwendung von Röntgenergebnissen gedeutet. Im Kristall hat das P3O9-Ion die Eigensymmetrie C3 v.
