Ammonolysis of the P4O10-molecule yields mainly derivatives of diphosphoric acid. By heating these reaction products to a temperature of about 100° C, an ammonium polyphosphate is formed in which one half of the phosphorus atoms is linked by oxygen atoms, ohne half by NH-groups.

Bei der Umsetzung zwischen P4O10 und NH3 wird die P4O10-Molekel aufgespalten. Es entstehen vorwiegend Derivate der Diphosphorsäure, die bei etwa 100° zu einem Ammoniumsalz einer Polyphosphorsäure, in der die eine Hälfte der P-Atome durch O-Brücken und die andere Hälfte durch NH-Brücken verknüpft ist, kondensiert werden können.
