PBr2F reacts with bromine at -75° C yielding PBr4F in molecular form which decomposes when warmed to room temperature. Below -30° C the compound is by and by changed to the saltlike form [PBr4]F which is stable at room temperature and has a m. p. of +87° C. [PBr4]F has electrolytical conductivity in CH3CN and half the molecular weight demanded by the formula PBr4F. Hydrolysis of [PBr4]F has been studied. Reaction of PBr2F with bromine in presence of CCl4 is giving [PBr4]F · 2 CCl4 when the temperature of the reaction mixture is not allowed to rise above -30° C. Content of CCl4 is destined refractometrically after hydrolysis of the compound and extracting the solution with α-brominenaphthaline.

Durch Bromieren von PBr2F bei -75° C entsteht PBr4F in der homöopolaren Form. Beim Erwärmen auf Zimmertemperatur zersetzt sich die Verbindung, aber beim Stehen über Nacht unterhalb -30° C wandelt sie sich in die stabile heteropolare Form [PBr4]F um, die bei 87° unter Zersetzung schmilzt. [PBr4]F besitzt in Acetonitril elektrolytische Leitfähigkeit und dissoziiert nach kryoskopischen Bestimmungen in Eisessig in zwei Teile. Die Hydrolyse von [PBr4]F wurde analytisch und papierchromatographisch unter sucht. Bei Bromierung von PBr2F in Gegenwart von CCl4 bei -75° C entsteht wiederum nach langsamer Umwandlungsreaktion unterhalb -30°C die Verbindung [PBr4]F · 2CCl4. Der CCl4-Gehalt wurde nach einem neu ausgearbeiteten Verfahren nach Ausschütteln der Hydrolysenlösung mit α-Bromnaphthalin refraktometrisch bestimmt. Für die Darstellung von PBr2F werden zwei einfache Möglichkeiten angegeben.
