    Notes: The formation and composition of Mercury arsenites, obtained by the interaction of Hg(ic) salt and NaAsO2 at specific pH levelsx 9.85, 11.25 and 12.28, has been studied from E.M.F. measurements involving potentiometric titrations between the reactants using platinum as an indicator electrode in conjunction with a saturated calomel electrode. Three definite arsenite compounds are formed having the molecular formulae HgO · As2O3; 2 HgO · As2O3; 3 HgO · As2O3 when HgCl2 or Hg(NO3)2 reacts with solutions of NaAsO2 (2 NaOH + As2O3) pH 9.85; 2 NaOH + 2 NaAsO2 (pH = 11.25) and 4 NaOH + 2 NaAsO2 (pH = 12.28) respectively. The proportion of HgO increases with the concentration of alkali used in the preparation of sodium arsenite. The formation of mercuric arsenite is thus a function of H+ ion concentration. The potentiometric titration curves are regular in form; a sharp break in potential occurs at the end point, with either of the reactants used as the titre; and the results are accurate and reproducible. The effect of alcohol and electrolytes on the end point as well as on the nature of curves has been studied.
