Description / Table of Contents:
Dimethyl boric acid reacts with KOH and ammonia giving the addition compounds K[(CH3)2B(OH)2] and (CH3)2BOH. NH3. The reaction with potassium metal in liquid ammonia does not result in the salt K[(CH3)2BO], because this product immediately dismutates into B(CH3)3 and K2[CH3BO2], Which is stabilised by the addition of two molecules of (CH3)2B(OH). The resulting salt K2[B3(CH3)5O2(OH)2] has been investigated. The reasons for the instability of the salts of the methylboric acids are discussed.
Notes:
