Germanium at 1270°C has such a strongly smeared out rocksalttype short range order (atomic separation somewhat less than 2.83 Å) that the co-ordination sphere for the next-nearest neighbours can no longer be seen. At 980°C, in the vicinity of the melting point, the co-ordination octahedra are greatly distorted, and one finds four close-spaced (〈2.70 Å) and two more distant (〈3.05 Å) co-ordination partners. The low viscosity and the metallic conductivity of the melt result from a mobile bonding system.

Das Germanium besitzt bei 1270°C eine so stark verschmierte kochsalzförmige Nahordnung der Atome (Atomabstand etwas kleiner als 2,83 Å), daß die Koordinationssphäre für den übernächsten Nachbarn nicht mehr sichtbar ist. Bei 980°C, in der Nähe des Schmelzpunktes, wird der Koordinationsoktaeder stark verzerrt, und man findet vier nahe (〈2,70 Å) und zwei weiter weg stehende (〈3,05 Å) Koordinationspartner. Die geringe Viskosität der Schmelze und ihre metallische Leitfähigkeit resultieren aus einen beweglichen Bindungssystem.
