Description / Table of Contents:
The luminescence spectra of the solid Eu-complexes Eu(phen)2(NO3)3, Eu(dipy)2(NO3)3, Eu(phen)3(SCN)3, Eu(phen)2(H2O)2Cl3 and Eu(dipy)2(H2O)2Cl3 are measured at 77°K and at high resolution. The analyses of the spectra and their interpretation on the basis of group theoretical arguments give the point symmetry D2 at the rare earth site, whereas the nature of the splitting indicates a higher, tetrahedral symmetry. The point symmetry of the hydrated chlorides is found to be C2v and those of the thiocyanates C2 or lower. In agreement with the stated symmetry and chemical composition for the structure of the investigated compounds a dodecahedron is proposed.
Notes:
