The polymerization of ethylene with supported catalysts, prepared from γ-alumina and tetrabenzylzirconium was studied and the order of the reaction was determined. The rate of polymerization depends on the composition of the metal organic surface compounds of the catalysts. During polymerization the active sites are produced gradually. The polymerization rate and the molecular weight of the polymers decreases on addition of hydrogen. In this case the active sites exist at the begin of the reaction. By pretreatment of the catalyst with ethylene or hydrogen benzyl groups are splitted off from the zirconium compounds.

Die Polymerisation des Ethylens wurde mit Trägerkatalysatoren, hergestellt aus γ-Aluminiumoxid und Tetrabenzylzirkonium, kinetisch untersucht und die Reaktionsordnung bestimmt. In Abhängigkeit von der Zusammensetzung der metallorganischen Oberflächenverbindungen der Katalysatoren wurden unterschiedliche Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeiten gefunden. Während der Polymerisation werden die Polymerisationsaktiven Zentren allmählich gebildet. Zusatz von Wasserstoff vermindert die Polymerisationsgeschwindigkeit und die Molmassen der gebildeten Polymere. In diesem Fall liegen die aktiven Zentren bereits bei Reaktionsbeginn vor. Durch Vorbehandlung der Katalysatoren mit Ethylen oder Wasserstoff werden Benzylgruppen von den fixierten Zirkoniumverbindungen abgespalten.
